I'll Give All My Secrets Away

Chapter 5 - The Gambler and The Buzzkill

‘Nick!’ I called down the stairs.

‘Yeah!’ He yelled back at me.

‘I’m going out, I’ll be back later.’ I said pulling on my leather boots to complete my look.

‘Alright see you later, Ally-cat.’ He called.

‘Where are you off too?’ I turned to see Harry standing at the top of the stairs a towel draped around his waist low enough that you could see his muscled v-line. My eyes slowly moved up his abs to his pecks to his biceps one of which was gripping a second towel as he dried of his dripping hair. I cleared my throat and forced my eyes to move to his face to see him smirking cockily.

‘I don’t remember it being any of your business.’ I replied, turning my back on him to grab my bag off the floor.

‘Wow!’ He said holding his hands up, ‘Sorry, I was just curious.’

‘Well, don’t.’ I said back before I walked out of the front door, calling to Grim over my shoulder. ‘Nick! I’ve got my phone, see you in a couple hours.’

‘Have fun on your secret mission, baby.’ I heard Harry call after me but I just rolled my eyes and slammed the door.

God he was such an ass!! No, I would not let Harry Styles take up any more of my time or energy, it was time to focus. I walked briskly for about five minutes to the tube station where I joined the massive group of travellers. I hurried to a little customer help window and got a travel card and excitedly went to the barriers. I slipped my ticket into the machine and down the escalator.

I loved the tube when I lived in London the first time. It was so quick, easy and really entertaining to be honest. The tube was the best place to people watch. People Watching was a game me and my best friend, Tam, used to play all the time. Basically we would sit in a crowded area like a mall or a station or a park and watch random people guess what their lives were like from what they were doing. I heard a woosh as a train rushed past the platform slowing as it pulled up to the stop. I gripped my bag tightly and jumped onto the train luckily finding a place to lean beside the glass wall next to a row of seats to my left.
I looked around the train as the doors began to closed and saw a young woman who was heavily pregnant next to a skinny older woman who was talking quickly to her gesturing a lot. I saw the young woman’s eyes fight to stay open and her sigh leaning back into her chair. Right, so the older woman is her mother… no! Mother-in-law and she’s having a good old bitch about her husband. I stifled a laugh as the mother-in-law gestured again to her wedding ring, one point me.

I heard the conductor call out illegibly that we were coming up to my stop and stood up wandering over to the doors. The train jerked to a stop and I just caught myself on one of the railings above my head. I clambered out pushing past the people getting on and walked briskly down the platform towards the exit.

Finally after pushing my way up the stairs and into the main station, I swiped my ticket through the barriers and walked up the stairs into the street. I smiled as I looked around Green Park and then walked the familiar route across Piccadilly towards Bolton Street. It took me about fifteen minutes to walked to Annabel’s and immediately walked up to the unsigned door. I opened it and walked into the bar area.

‘We’re closed until 7.’ I heard a familiar gruff voice call without looking up from his book.

‘I think you'll make an exception for this one, Old Man...’ I said back, grinning so wide it made my cheeks ache. 'Besides you owe me a drink.'

Darren Kenneth’s head shot up at my voice. His skin wrinkled around his hard grey eyes that shimmered with happiness at my arrival but I knew that he’d deny it if I asked. His smoke stained teeth were just visible under his full lips which were pulled up into his famous smirk. His built body was hidden under a loose fitting t-shirt and a pair of black jeans but it was still very noticeable. He hadn’t changed a bit in the last three years.

‘Are you sure that’s me?’ He joked. ‘I’m not much of a betting man…’

‘I’m sure.’ I scoffed.

‘Jeez, Kid.’ He exclaimed dramatically. ‘I hope you feel bad taking advantage of my problem…’

‘Don’t try that one, Kenneth. I don’t make the rules.’ I replied wandering over to the bar to take a seat opposite him on one of the leather stools.

‘Glendronach 1973.’ He said opening up a bottle from a cupboard underneath the counter.
I smiled as he poured out my favourite drink order without hesitation even down to the number of ice cubes. He poured one for himself and we clinked our glasses.

‘So…’ He said after a few moments of silence. ‘Do I have to send someone to kill him?’

‘As tempting as that sounds, no...’ I said taking another sip of the whiskey enjoying the burn.
‘He’s not worth you going to jail.’

‘I’ve got away with it before.’ He replied darkly into his glass as he glugged the gold liquid.

‘And you’ve been nicked for it before.’ I reminded him.

‘It would be worth it.’ Darren said after a few seconds pretending to weigh up the consequences. ‘Plus, I know where I went wrong last time I’ve learnt from my mistakes.’

I chuckled and shook my head, ‘Ask me again after a few more drinks and I’m sure you’ll get the answer you want but for now, it’s a no to murdering my ex-boyfriend.’

‘Well aren’t you the buzzkill today….’ He joked before touching my hand kindly. ‘I really am sorry though, Kid.’

‘It’s fine.’ I whispered before clearing my throat. ‘So how’s business, old man?’

We talked all afternoon about random stuff and about the bar. Turned out he was looking for a new bartender, a position I immediately claimed as mine making him laugh. He told me to start tonight which meant I had two hours to go back to Nick’s, get changed and come back.

‘I’m gonna go.’ I said chucking back the remainder of my current glass of whiskey and standing up. ‘See you tonight, Kenneth.’

‘See you tonight, Kid.’ He replied.

@alexyeubanks

It was so stupid! I was on holiday and I fell down some stone steps and smacked my head on one of them as I went down. I'm so clumsy and I do silly things like that a lot but that one was pretty severe :/ I'm ok now though thank god

Oh my gosh, what happened? How'd you get hit over the head, if you don't mind me asking?
