Challenges In Our Marriage
Chapter 25
The day with Gwen and Perrie, was cut short because Mel wasn’t feeling well. Ever since Harry left their New York house, she had been sick with fever and headache. It was her first night back in their Malibu and their children were asleep. Mel had shifted next to Aria’s bed in her room and did her best to sleep. She’d screwed things up and now her children would have to suffer the consequences of her action to throw their father out of her life.
Unlike other times, Mel wasn’t able to do anything more than eat, sleep and stare out into their courtyard and help Lucy look after the children. During the day with her children she is happy and loved spending time with them and during the night she is depressed and missed not having Harry in their house.
The bone-deep pain inside her chest simply didn’t let up. At one point, she considered calling her doctor, thinking that something is wrong, but then she realised a broken heart held physical pain.
Three days after her arrival home, Mel was still sick, so she made good use of her time by making an appointment with her long time friend and Doctor Emma, to check out what was really wrong with her.
Sitting on an exam table, wearing a flimsy hospital gown, Mel braced her arm against the chill in the room. The stress of her marriage and the worries about her children holiday kept her at night, and was wreaking havoc with her appetite.
A slight knock on the door proceeded as Emma walking in. “There you are. We were wondering when we were going to see you in here.”
“Hi, Emma.”
Emma hugged her before taking a seat on a rolling stool. “It’s good to see you.”
“Life got a little crazy.”
“I know. It’s not every day I see my patients’ faces in the tabloids.”
“Yeah, it crazy. Part of the reason that I’m here is to get on those birth control pills we talked about.”
Emma smiled. “Of course. You’ll wonder why you waited to take them now when you already have kids and married.”
Mel just smiled politely, as they talked about the pros and cons of the pill for some time before Emma asked, “So what else is bothering you?”
“I’m not sure. I haven’t had my usual energy lately. At first, I thought I was just being lazy, on an extended pre- holiday getaway. But my appetite is gone most of the day, and I’m tired than normal.”
Emma scribbled a few notes on her chart. “Any fever?”
“Not frequently.”
“Cough?”
“No.”
“Nausea, vomiting, or any change of habits?”
“A little queasy. But I think it’s just because I go so long between meals.” Or just the fact that she missed her husband, she thought.
“Hmm.” Emma stood and removed her stethoscope from around her neck. After listening to her lungs, she said, “Lie back.”
Mel relaxed on the exam table while Emma pressed on her belly. “Any pain?”
“No.”
“When was your last period?”
Mel glanced at the ceiling. “I’m due any day from now.”
“When was your last one?”
“I don’t remember. I’ve always been irregular.”
Emma titled her head to the side, laughing.
“I’m not pregnant.”
“I didn’t say you were.”
Emma patted her on her arm before reaching behind her and grabbing a cup. “You know where the bathroom is. Let’s remove pregnancy from possible reasons, so we can start looking for another source.”
Mel hopped from the table, ignoring the slight tremor in her hand. “Fine.”
The next twenty minutes were the longest in her life. Mel searched back in her calendar on her phone to the time before she had went to San Diego, desperately trying to prove Emma wrong before she walked back into the room.
But when the door opened and Emma stepped into the room, Mel’s heart plunged to the ground.
“Congratulations.”
Mel jumped to her feet, shaking her head. “NO.”
“We can run other test, but these are accurate. You’re pregnant, not sick. It baby number three, Mel.”
Everything stands still. The clock on the wall ticked away the seconds, and the room closed in around her. Mel’s chest started a rapid rise and fall as she struggled to take a deep breath. Tears stung the back of her eyes.
“Sit down.” Emma helped her onto the exam table again. “Take a deep breath. Everything is going to be okay.”
“You don’t understand.” How could she? Emma saw a married woman, with two children and a lovely husband, who adore her.
“Then help me understand. What are you afraid of?”
“It not what we wanted,” Mel whispered, lost in her thoughts.
“What do you mean? I’m sure your husband loves you.”
But he left her for his ex-lover, he didn’t love her and now she is pregnant for him. A ter dropped down her cheek.
“Melrose?”
Sucking in her bottom lip and forcing her eyes to dry, Mel shook her head. “Women are emotional creatures. Especially pregnant women.” Oh God, I’m pregnant again for the third time.
“Are you sure that’s all it is?”
Unable to tell Emma the truth, Mel nodded. “I’m just too excited and can’t wait to tell the kids.”
“I Know.” Emma outlined the first few months of the pregnancy, while Mel listened with half an ear. As she walked out off the office with a prescription for prenatal vitamins instead of birth control, Mel never felt so alone in her life.By the time she reached her car, the tears streamed down her face, and she was helpless to stop them.
It was four days till Christmas, and she would be excited for this pregnant. This would have been the most precious gift to deliver to Harry. But it not, this year Christmas would be just her and her two kids with a pregnancy and a missing husband.
