Challenges In Our Marriage

Chapter 24

He walked out. Dammit, he had left her, after all his promises to her to never leave her. Women are emotional creatures. He needed to give her some time to blow off some steam. He understands that, but she’d allowed his to come back and settle this problem once and for all.On his way to his office he called Jeff his head of security. Harry needed to know who told his wife about the call to Robert office and why the sudden change towards him.

“Hello, Jeff. I need some information on my wife, where she was, who she talked. I need this information now,” he said. He didn’t wait on Jeff’s reply because he was so worried that he would miss Rose’s call.
Yet, as the minutes rolled into an hour and the one hour into two, Harry knew his omission weighed on his wife a lot more than he could imagine. When his phone rang an hour later, he jumped to answer it.
“Rose”
“It’s Jeff. Sorry, I can call back if you’re expecting another call.”

The last person he needed to speak with was Jeff, but he needed the information to try and save his marriage. Harry swirled the triple-malt scotch around his glass before titling the amber liquid back in his throat. “What is it?”
“Are you Ok? You sound like shit.”
“Thanks.”
“Ok, not in the mood for chitchat. Just thought you’d like to know that one of the PI saw Jacqueline corner Mel in a department store today. According to him, Jacqueline seemed a little aggressive, and instead of leaving angry, Mel left upset. Check your email, I just sent some photos for you to check out and I want you to identify who the person is talking to Jacqueline.”

Jacqueline? Did your guy hear the conversation?”
“No. He doesn’t get that close. Is everything OK?”
Harry’s mind ticked. So that’s how Rose had found out about the divorce. Jacqueline must have known about the divorce. But how?
Then the image of the woman in the picture swam in his eyes. “No! The woman...”
“What?”
“In the picture with Jacqueline. Vanessa something. Works as a freaking secretary for Robert.” Harry slapped a hand on his forehead. “Jacqueline knows Robert’s legal secretary, Jeff.”
“Your ex knows the right hand of your uncle’s lawyer?”

“Yes, which means Jacqueline knew all along about my uncle’s will.”No wonder Jacqueline was so desperate for him to marry her till her break up with her. And now she is back because she thinks that him marriage with Rose is in trouble and she thinks that he would get back with her.
“So what did she say to your wife?”
“Enough to make her anger and throw me about of our house.” Harry had no use sugar coating the situation.
“Left? What do you mean?”
“Never mind. I’ll get back to you, but in the meantime call my lawyer, to draft a letter to Robert dictating that a breach in confidentially might render anything from his office null and void.”

Dammit. He is not better than his dead father. He was a tyrant. Even in the midst of losing his wife, his children, he thought about the eventual end.
He called Neil to check if Rose was still in the house in New York he wanted to sort out their problem before spending Christmas with their children in peace and love together.
Harry wanted to call her back, force her to listen to him. What proof did he really have?
The image of Jacqueline shot into his mind, and his pissed meter struck an all-time high. The anger he harboured for his father and uncle was walk in the park compared to his need for revenge on his ex-lover.

Harry picked up the phone and called James, who had several friends in the NYPD.
“Carter, I need you to do something for me.”

After planning with Gwen and Perrie to spend the day with Rose while he deal with Jacqueline. Twenty hours later, Harry stood in front of the exclusive high-rise condominium complex, twisting his hands so hard Rose would be proud of him. Not going to Rose had been hell, but he wouldn’t confront her until Jacqueline paid for what she’d done.
The moment Jacqueline floral perfume assaulted his senses; his heartbeat sped, not because of residual feelings or desire for the woman, but with a deep-seated hatred. If she ruined his marriage with wife and children, he’d find a way to also ruin her.
“Harry? Darling, how are you?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw one of the undercover detectives that James had sent to help him.
“I wondered if you had a minute.” His skin crawled just thinking of being agreeable to her for the time it took the officers to search her home.
“I didn’t think we had anything more to say to each other.”
“I want to thank you for your warning.” He rolled the lie off his tongue so easily even he believed it.
“Warning? About what?”

“About Melrose not being happy in our marriage ever since she lost her wedding ring...” He let is words trail to see what Jacqueline would do with the baited hook.
“Oh, Harry.” She removed her sunglasses and sent him a pointed stare. She pushed out her lower lips with an expression that mirrored sympathy. “What happened?”
“I’m not sure. Maybe she finally realised that she never loved me or that she found out that I still loved someone else.”
Jacqueline hung her head. “Oh my.”

Harry closed his eyes, thankful his sunglasses hid the majority of his expression. What a conniving, vengeful bitch. He sent a mental signal to whoever was watching for the men in Jacqueline’s apartment to hurry the hell up. Every second in this woman’s presence was one Harry wasn’t sharing with his wife.
“I can’t imagine, after all you up and married her shortly after we’d...” she said
Harry signed. “I...” The phone in his pocket buzzed. He shifted it to his palm and read James’s text: Got her!
The lie he’d been about to spew died on his tongue. Instead, he let the truth sing. “I love my wife.”

“What?”
“Love. Trust. Things I never felt with you.”
Jacqueline, who had moved closer to him than he ever wanted her to, shifted back. The color in her face drained. “You just said...” Harry removed his sunglasses; let the tightness in his jaw show as his eyes narrowed daggers. From Jacqueline’s expression, she felt them drive deep into her core.
“Your venom has poisoned enough. Did you really think you’d get away with it? Right now, in your house, the police have searched and found everything they need.
Jacqueline started to edged back. Her stiletto heels caught, and she nearly fell. As she righted herself, her eyes burned with pure hatred. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, I think you do.”

Harry noticed a black-and-white pull up along the side walk. Jacqueline’s eyes shot to the police and back to him.
“I did nothing illegal.”
“We’ll let the court decide that.” she might not spend years behind bars, but Harry wanted every man who crossed her path to know what kind of snake she was.
