Challenges In Our Marriage

Chapter 23

There was no greater impact than seeing a set of bags packed and on a doorstep to know a problem was erupting. Harry had lied to her about their marriage. Instead of coming to her with their problem so that they could have possibly found a solution for it, he had manipulated the situation to produce an outcome to suit his needs and ways for him to get back with Jacqueline.

Harry knew her secrets, her insecurities, and had played on them to get what he needed. He had sacrificed their love, family and their two lovable children for his own selfish gain.
Together, they’d embarked on the deal with the devil, to start their marriage based on a business proposal and during the proposal they’d both falls in love with each other and now with two kids. They had married to suit the needs of a dead man and both leave richer in the end but that had changed as their attraction grew.

For as much as she wanted to hurt Harry, she wanted nothing to do with harming their children. Damn him. Damn him for making her love him; trust him and then blowing that all to hell. The key in the lock twisted, and Mel set her gaze on the bags sitting by the door. She lifted the glass of wine in her hand. Out of the corner of her eye, she noted Harry’s hesitation two steps into the room. “Rose?”

She’d thought of what to say all afternoon. The image of her running, not saying a thing to his face and leaving him with the knowledge that she’d simply left, but in the end, she couldn’t leave without a final word of disapproval.
“When were you going to tell me?” she said as he inched into the room, as if he were walking into a minefield full of bombs ready to explode.

“Tell you what?”
“That you spent time at your lawyer’s today. Surely you discussed the divorce.”
Harry held still.
Mel slowly turned her head to his direction, but she took a considerable amount of time before levelling her eyes to his. When she did, she noted how he glanced between the wine glass in her hand and to her face.
“What’s going on, Rose?” his gaze shot to the bags she’d packed so he could make a somewhat graceful exit.
“I thought we were going to be honest with each other. What happened to that, Harry?”
“Rose, what are you talking about?”
Unable to sit, she stood and placed the wine on the table, nearly spilling it. To Harry, she probably looked as if she’d been drinking too much. Just as well, she thought. “Your call to Robert about our divorce? Or did you think I’d never find out?”

Harry’s eyes grew wide, and his lips fell into a tight line. His expression said all she needed to know. Guilt...Maybe a little remorse. But for what? Remorse over being caught in a lie?
“I didn’t think it was important, giving the fact that I made that call out of anger.”
“You didn’t think to tell me that you’re going to divorce me was important for me to know?”
Harry shut his eyes, accepting her words. And that said everything to Mel. Killing the tears before they had a chance to fall, Mel squared her shoulders and stormed toward her husband. “Honesty was what defined us. But you couldn’t trust me with that, could you?”
Harry opened his eyes and watched her approach. “I didn’t want to burden you with something that wasn’t going to happen.”

Her jaw dropped in a sarcastic laugh. “Burden me? God, you actually believe yourself. You’re no better than your father. You tell around you how it’s going to be, force your will on others, and they fall into step. Sometimes I just hope that our Eddie doesn’t turn out to be you or his grandfather.”
Harry reached out, but Mel sidestepped away from his hands. “Don’t touch me. Those days are over.”
“Rose, please, I know this seems-“
“I know what this is, Harry. You lied to me about our marriage. That day you walked into our room and told me that everything was okay. You told not to worry about anything but to find the ring and I believed you.”
“After I finish making the call, Gwen talked me out of it, Rose. I was anger and I wanted to punish you for losing your wedding ring.”

Her stomach twisted. This stress couldn’t be good for her. She forced a big breath of air into her lungs and blew it out slowly. “That may be. But it didn’t stop you from telling me in the end, did it?”
Harry shook his head. “What are you saying? I didn’t tell you because it was an honest mistake.”
Without another word, Mel walked over to the table were her phone was and walked over to his bags.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re leaving. Or did the bags confuse you?”
“Jezz, Rose, we can work this out and I know that I should have told you about calling Robert about the divorce.”
“Yes, Harry. You should have told me and I would have listen and forgive you, but this is....”
Her heart broke into thousand pieces as the next words left her mouth. “All you had to do was confided in me.”
“So what he want me to just leave and not sort this out like adult. Rose?”
“Harry, please don’t make this difficult as it already is. I just want some space away from you to clear me head.”
“So that just it. You just want me to leave?”
“Yes, Harry. I just want you to leave.”
“Where do you want me to go?”

Mel just looked at him, really to forgive him and accepted his plead. But she was so upset that she wanted to punish him for confiding in Jacqueline instead of her, his own wife. She turned her back on Harry so that he couldn’t see the tears that were treating to fall, as she drives the stake right into his heart.
“I suggest you go to hell and after dealing with your demons there, than I would expect you to make your way to four seasons hotel where Jacqueline would be waiting for you to start a life with her.”

All she heard was the door closing, as Harry walked out. She half expected him to rush back and demand that the sort out their problem. But then, that was the romantic in her, the part of her that believed she meant something to him other than the problem that was driving them apart.
