Challenges In Our Marriage

Chapter 22

Harry POV

After Aria’s birthday, Mel and Harry had to travel to New York for a work Christmas party. The small dinner party rumbled with excitement until Harry finally hushed the members and took Rose by the hand.

“I think by now most of you have guessed why we are all here tonight,” he began. “Besides the fact that it a holiday season, I would like to thanks everyone in this room for all the hard work that you have contributed toward this company and I’m grateful for that. I hope you all have a nice holiday breaks with your families.”

Cheers and a chorus of well-wishes rose. He and Rose went their separate ways talking with some of the workers. His gaze fell to his wife in the sea of people, pulling her in for a hug. Identifying his love for their children and Rose collided with another reality. It was almost midnight, when Rose moved to his side and placed a hand around his waist before leaning into his. “I love you speech to your workers, if just made you a proud Boss. And it makes me a proud wife.”

His gaze around the room, “Yeah I am lucky to have you and them as workers.”
Rose leaned her head on his shoulder and stifled a yawn behind her hand.
“You’re tired,” Harry announced. “We should get you home and in bed.”
“But there are still a lot of people here. We can’t just leave.”

“People will just have to do without us.” When Rose didn’t offer any more resistance, he knows the extent of her exhaustion and ushered her to bed.

Mel POV

Mel and Harry had decided to stay for a couple of days before heading back home to their children. While Harry went to his office to finish some work business, Mel braved the cold of Manhattan and did a round of Christmas shopping especially for Skyler Gwen and Liam baby girl it her first Christmas with the family and Mel want her to have the best gifts. She went into the baby shops and found a hand knitted white blanket for Skyler. With several bags in hand, Rose was shuffling through tiny clothes and toys when she felt a tap on her shoulder.

She twists to see who wanted her attention, and Jacqueline stood before her, all blonde and bombshell.“Why am I not surprised to find you here?” Jacqueline all but hissed from between her red lips.
Mel really didn’t care what the other woman thought, and certainly didn’t want to become engaged in a conversation with her. What are the chances of running into the woman in a city the size of New York, anyway? Mel knew she lived there, but what were the odds of seeing her in a baby store?

“Jacqueline, what a surprise?”
Jacqueline tripped a finger at the elephant rattle Mel held. “Isn’t this cute? So when are you expecting your bundle of joy again?”
“It’s really none of your business, but I am not pregnant. It a gift,” said Mel as she turned to walk away.
“Let me guess”- Jacqueline blocked her exit, leaving Mel between bookcases “Your ring is missing again?”

Easy guess. Not that it mattered. “Are you so envious, Jacqueline? So jaded that Harry didn’t marry you? Beside my ring is on my finger, see?
Jacqueline tossed her head back with a laugh. “Oh please. That manipulating bastard? It’s easier to see his true nature when you’re not close to him. Too bad you didn’t notice.” Jacqueline let her voice drift off as her eyes settled to Mel’s ring.
Mel placed a hand over her wrist, as if protecting her ring from the woman’s stare. “Harry is one of the most caring people I’ve known. And what makes you so sure about MY Husband?”

“Harry care only for himself, I wonder, though, why he would ask his uncle lawyer recently to reactivate the contract that the both of you had before being officially married?” using her fingers in air quotes.
Their conversation was toppling off a mountain of weird and plunging toward bizarre. “I don’t have time for this, Jacqueline. If you’ll excuse me.”
Mel edged away, but Jacqueline grasped her arm.
“My God, you really have no idea, do you?”
Mel tugged her arm, but the other woman didn’t let go. A strange wave of panic hit her. Much like a feeling a dog must get before and earthquake happens. Everything in Mel went silent.
Jacqueline’s smile lifted high on her face, and her hand drifted back to her side. “Poor girl still thinking that her marriage is fine and wonderful, not knowing that her husband want her out of their marriage till her get her ring back.”
Mel’s jaw started to ache. She held her control so tight she felt like the muscles in her neck were ready to snap. What the hell is she talking about? Not giving Jacqueline anything more, Mel turned on her heel and fled the store.

The cold of New York plastered her head as she put distance between her and Jacqueline. Marriage over. The words echoed inside her brain. Could they be true? If they were, it made sense now. Refusing to let her emotion completely cloud her mind, Mel hailed a cab and worked her way uptown to the condo-minium Harry owned on the upper eastside. It was her second time that she’d visited, both on charity and work parties. It was just after noon when she made her way into the warn air of the secured building.

Mel waved at the doorman and made it to the bank of elevators, avoiding any conversation.Unlike their home, there was no Lucy or the kids out here. Tossing the forgotten bags on the sofa, Mel picked up her phone and called their lawyers office to confirm the news.

“Hello, may I please speak with Robert?”
“Sorry he is not in the office, this is his assistant. But you can leave a message.”
“No, I just want to check if Mr Styles called about having a divorce?” Mel knew that it was against the law to share of private information but she was desperate to know.
“Well...uhh. Who is this?”
“Sorry, I’m his wife lawyer.”
“Well, Mr Styles did call to redraw a contract but that all at this stage. It that okay?”
“Nah it prefect, thank you,” she said before her hang up.

Unable to believe her ears, or what her mind was screaming, in all their honesty all their talk about being open, Harry had betray her. Everything inside her screamed. How could she have been so naive? So gullible? Tears streamed down her face as she packed the gifts together. There was nothing that Mel hated more than being used as a pawn. How could the man that she loved do this to her?
How was she going to survive without him or their children?
