Challenges In Our Marriage

Chapter 14

Lillian POV

Lillian was driving with one eyes open still she reached Harry and her sister’s Malibu house. she doesn’t know what possessed Harry to call her at 1:00am in the morning, knowing too well that the Jameson have family gathering on Sunday. Which she has to help Gran and her mother preparing the foods since Mel isn’t there to help out. She drove into their house slamming the door as she went in searched for Harry, luckily she doesn’t have to search far as he was coming down the stairs.

“Hello, Lilli,” he said with that cheeky smiled of his, the one that her sister goes crazy one. Well there is one way to wipe off that cheeky smile and she know how to do just that.
“What the hell, Harold Styles, calling me at 1am in the morning what were you thinking?” she asked as Harry smiled dropped because he hates it when other people called him ‘Harold’ besides his wife.

“It Harry in case you didn’t know that. Well I’m travelling to night for a fundraiser party at Chicago and I need you to look after the kids till I’m back from my trip.”
“Why not call Lucy, Why me?”
“Because Lucy has her own family to look after and you are always available when it comes to your Godchildren, or do you want me to change that?”
“Are you trying to blackmail me with my God children?”
“No but I need you to look after them while I’m gone.”

“Fine, I would do it not because you’re blackmailing me but because I love my nephew and niece. But I would let Mel knows that you travelled just hours after she left.”
“Thanks and not a word to Mel, plus the kids have those effects on you.”
“Yeah well they are cute and well behave so what not to love.”
“Yeah because they have the ‘Styles’ DNA effects on the Jameson’s women and men.”
“That because they also have a ‘Jameson’ DNA.”
“Yeah well, Neil is waiting outside so I have to go now,” he said before giving her a kiss on her cheek. Well now instead of sleeping, Lillian would just settle back to work on her designs.

Mel POV

In Chicago time
After her conversation while Harry, Mel was now unpacking her clothes when she heard a knock on the door Mel unlocked it and let James in with their lunch.
“That was fast,” she commented as she reached for the evidences on the case.
But James stopped her. “Whoa, we’re going to eat lunch like normal people and not talk about the case, okay?”

Mel more than readily agreed. They had been talking about the case for weeks and she felt like they need a little break from the case. To be able to have a few minutes reprieve to eat and relax sounded like heaven but her family was missing.
James had set up their food at the table in his room and waited for Mel to sit down before he joined her. “I hope that you had enough time to get at least a little settled into your room.
Mel waved him off. “I don’t plan on getting too comfortable because we are on a case and I need to wrapped this case as quick as possible and head home to me family.”
“That makes sense. Did you have time to call Harry or the kids?”

“Yeah Harry and I had a conversation about the party tonight and the kids were in bed you know time difference.”
“Well that okay then. So have you ever been to Chicago before?” he asked.
Mel was delicately eating a chef’s salad and held her finger up while she finished chewing before answering. “Actually, I haven’t. It was never really on my radar as someplace that I wanted to see and my sight-seeing day are over because I have a family and most holidays Harry planned a surprise vacation for the family. I’m not really focusing on it now since we’re not here to sight-see.”

“True that. Are you a baseball fan?” he asked. Mel shook her head. “Oh well, I thought we could maybe find time to watch the game live before you returned back to your family.”
Mel gave James a serene smile. “I don’t expect you to entertain me, James. We’re here to save an innocent teenager. That’s not going to happen if we’re off playing tourist.”

James POV
While he shouldn’t be happy that she wasn’t looking for any personal attention from him, there was just something about Mel that was unsettling since he first met her.
“You’re right about that,” he finally answered. “I always tell myself that I’m going to take the time and go and see a game but I never do. Are there any sports that you do enjoy?”
“Soccer, because of my husband and son.”

James almost choked on his sandwich. “Soccer? Seriously?”
Mel looked at him with confusion. “What’s wrong with soccer?”
“Nothing, nothing at all it’s just that I thought for sure you would have said something like tennis. Because soccer is a loud, obnoxious, violent sport, I just can’t see you standing up and screaming at a game.”
“Well my husband is British and my son loves soccer and he plays for a team. Well believe me; I have done my own share of screaming. Soccer has got to be one of the most challenging sports there is to play. There’s so much going on and it’s just fascinating to watch.”

“What your favourite team?”
“Man united.”
“You’re a Manchester fan, but you’re not British. Aren’t you from America?”
Mel laughter before answering him, “What does that have to do with anything? America has a soccer team and Man united is an awesome soccer club!”
During their conversation James realised that Mel indeed have a happy marriage and everything she had said to him involved her husband or her children. James tucked that bit of information away as he glanced at his watch. “If we’re going to get everything done that we need to, we need to finish up here and get ready for the party. The car will be back for us in one hour. Will that be enough time for you?”

“Yeah, one hour will be fine to get ready,” Mel said, pushing her unfinished salad aside.
Finishing his last bite of his sandwich, James rose from his chair and went in search of his own clothing and then turned back to Mel. “So what do you think? Do I stick with the stripes or bow tie?”

“Don’t be such chick, James,” she said teasingly as she stood. “The bow tie is fine.” Mel turned and walked into her room to dress. James stood still for a minute and realised that her opinion really was beginning to matter but not as an obsessed lover but as a friend and Mel friendship is important for him to lose. Trying to ruin her marriage would break her heart and her new family is worth every to her. Maybe someday, I would have what she have with Harry.
