Falling

Chapter 4

Song for the chapter: Jessie J - I miss her

„Don`t you wanna get that?”, Harry asked and pointed to my mobile phone that was still laying on the floor after our little “crash”. I sighed inwardly.
He wanted to say something really important, something I really wanted to know , but he was right I should get that call. I picked up the phone and answered.

“Hello?”

“OMG, Clary it is me! My car broke down! In the middle of nowhere! I am so sorry I wanted to call you, but everything was so busy and now I think I have to take the bus back home because my grandma called me 10 ten times! Damn it, why did I bought her an own mobile phone?”

Simon did seriously not took a breath between his sentences. Harry made a move which meant that he has to get back to work. I nodded fast, since it was my fault he had stopped for the last minutes. When he turned around I could not stop myself from taking a look at his ass. More than just nice.
Simon got me out of my trance.

“I do not think I can make it! I am so sorry, Clary! But Taylor can bring you home, right?!”

He screamed into my ear and I had the urge to yell back that he should calm down a little bit. But of course it was not his fault and he was just clearly messed up.

“Simon, just calm down and take a deep breath. Taylor actually never showed up here. But I will just call my mom, that is fine. Just make sure you get home safe and take care of your grandma, alright?”, I said.

“Are you sure? I feel so bad, really Clary”, he whined.

“Really Simon I am okay. Promise me you call me when you are home?”, I asked.

“I will and I owe you something! See you tommorow at school?”

“Sure”, I answered wondering why I should not be at school tomorrow, “see you there.”

I ended the conversation. Next thing to do was to call Taylor again. It rang 7 times before her mailbox voice started to tell me that she was not available (harhar who ever is when the mailbox goes on?!) and told me to leave a message.

“Hey, it is me Clary. I am just wondering where you are. I hope you are alright, please send me a life sign as soon as you here this”, I told the box.

My mum luckily answered me. “I can not pick you up. I am at work right now, but you can take the next bus”, she told.

“But mum I have no idea which station I have to get off!”, I complained.

But she was not really listening to me because she was distracted by her work.

“You are 17 years old! You will be able to find out! Just stop beeing so scared of everything you has not done before!”

I told her that I will be and hung up. Thanks for the support!, I thought angrily. It was getting already pretty dark outside and I was cursing the decision to come that late. But Simon promised me to take me home after we would have been ready with our presentation.

I walked back to the place I sat early and wrapped myself back in the thick warm layers. I must hurry to make sure that I find the way even in the dark. I was not afraid to walk because I could get caught but I was more afraid of not finding home since I did not knew this town at all. I grapped all my stuff and smashed it into my bag, before I got back to the front door to leave.

“Hey!”, Harry shouted from behind me.

I stopped and turned to him. He came towards me.

“Are you leaving without ordering anything?”, he smiled, so I knew he was just making a joke.

“Yeah, looks like my personal taxi can not come, so I have to walk.”

“It is getting dark really fast. I think it will only take 15 minutes from now”, he said.

I took a look at the big clock on the wall. Half past eight already. I would really have to hurry to make it before the dawn.

“Then I really have to go now!” I said in a rush.

“OR you can order something and I take you home in ten minutes?”, he asked.

“I do not know. What about your shift?”, I asked unsure.

“It is over in ten minutes. I want to drive you home because I really do not like the thought of you walking alone a dark street.”

He did not mention my tiny size again and I was really grateful for that. I have been home several times in the dark and on my own, but I normally knew the place really well. The only routes I knew in Holmes Chapel where the ones from the station to our house and from our house to the school building. And since today the one that led me here. I sighed.

“Okay. You can drive me home.”

He smiled and I was sure I could see for a second something shine in his eyes. Joy? But no it think it was just the light.
(10 MINUTES LATER)
I ordered a machiatto and Harry decided to made it a “machiatto to go” since we were ready to leave the “Time-out”. Harry said bye to the old ladies and I realized that he was the only staff member that was younger than 50. He was kind of cute when he hugged them and told them to not make any big mess in the bakery over night. I raised my eyebrows in surprise.

The ladies waved me goodbye and I had to smile and just raised my hand for a goodbye when Harry was already pushing me out of the door.

“Over the night?”, I asked still surprised, trying to get along with his pace since he was only making one step while I was taking five.

“Yeah, I normally check in for some minutes before school, just to wish everyone a good morning and smell a little bit of the scent of fresh pastries”, he said with a smile in his voice.

Damn it, since when is the word pastries so sexy?!

He lead me to an old Volkswagen and I had to smile. The inside was really cleaned up which surprised me a little bit. It smelled like bread and coffee.

“You have to admit it”, I said trying to keep a conversation to not have to deal with awkward silence, “if there is one thing we Germans can do pretty good it is building cars.”

He stared over to me.

“You are German?”, he asked really surprised. I nodded.

“Just got shipped over here.” On the contrary to Simon he did not laugh about this awful joke. He still seemed to be surprised.

“Your English is pretty good. I mean sure different to how we talk here, but really good.” I blushed a little bit. I hate compliments. Really I just never know what to answer.

“Thank you, I guess.”

Harry started the car and turned the radio down, which was clearly a sign he wanted to talk. I told him my address and he seemed to know exactly how to get there. I stared out the window didn`t know what to say.

But I felt good. I liked the smell in the car and the quit music coming from the radio. I pressed my cold fingers around the coffee mug.

“So why did you move?”, Harry asked me.

I looked at him, but he was focused on the street.

“My mum and her new husband are starting her own company over here”, I said. I was assuming that he would just take it that way like everyone else did.

But instead he asked: “Are you okay with that?”

I wanted to say that I am, but I stopped before I started talking. Was I?I never allowed myself to ask this question because I thought I would just get upset and be all whining and yammering like my sister.

“I think I am. At least now, but I left friends and even though I think I never told them enough, I really care about them”, I answered and felt like it was the truth.

“I can imagine that it sucks. New school and all that stuff”, he said.

“But it is kind of an adventure”, I said.

“Oh, yeah I think Holmes Chapel is the best place to seek for an adventure”, he said sarcastically. I had to laugh. “Now really I think you could try to have the best time with the cows we have over here and believe me we have lots of them.”

I shook my head. “Where I come from it is not really different so not a big change.”

He looked at me. “Now that I know that you are German I can hear your accent a little bit”, he said. I blushed again.

He is just looking at you. Just looking at you.

But when did I ever get that much attention from a boy? I started to stare out the window again. Stevies Wonders´ “Isn`t she lovely” came up on the radio.

“Do you mind?”, Harry asked his hand on the volume putton. “Oh, of course not”, I answered.

He turned up the volume and started humming. I could not stop myself from melting a little bit inside. Was he feeling the same amazed feeling from the music right now? I felt comfortable in my warm clothes, starring out the window into the darkness and just hearing Harry hum.

It felt so good. These are the moments, I thought. These are the moments we keep in our memory and I wanted to make sure that this one was really secured and looked to never be forgotten.
