Niall's Fire
Four
-Quincey-
He was a strange boy. He had a nice laugh and a nice smile. Every time he showed his goofy smile and laugh, it made a bubble well up in me that just made me wanted to laugh.
You know those people who just have such amazing laughs that usually their laugh is funnier than whatever they're laughing about it? Those are my favorite kind of people. He was one of them.
Our nurses agreed to let us hang out together. We watched whatever was on TV for a long time. The fun part was that we just kept trashing whatever was on. He made comments on whatever was happening that made me crack up, and he laughed at all of my remark as well, which made me feel... good.
After a while, I felt kind of tired, and stopped making as many remarks. We sat their watching Grease in silence.
Suddenly, he reached for the remote and shut off the TV.
He turned to me. "What's your name?"
"What?"
"I just want to know your name." he said, chuckling.
"Quincey." I replied.
"That's a nice name." he said simply.
"Thanks." I smiled and looked over at him. His chin was rested in his hands on the side of my bed. He looked like a puppy. That's when I noticed that I was being completely rude.
"What's yours?"
"Niall."
"I like your name too." I smiled. I didn't know what else to do. I didn't talk with boys much.
"Thanks." We both looked at each other and we did one of those things where we both smiled at each other because we knew it was so awkward.
"So what are you in here for?" he asked, adjusting the position of his head.
"I got hit by a car." I told him, realizing that it was the first time that I had told that to anyone out loud.
I saw his face go slack. His eyes widened. I chuckled at him.
"It's okay," I reassured him, "I'm fine. But I probably look pretty bad don't I?"
"I think you look good." he said, chuckling back. "I'm sorry to hear about that."
"I'm fine," I repeated. "Why are you here?"
"Nothing special. I'm having a knee surgery."
"Oh cool." Wait. What did I just say? "I mean, not cool, but you know what-"
he laughed, "I know what you mean. Thanks." And then he just stared at me and I stared back for a few long seconds before my nurse came hustling in with a cart of scary looking instuments and bags of fluid.
She looked at Niall condescendingly, "You need to go."
Niall shot me a look. What's eating her? his eyes said. I shrugged and shot a look back.
He stifled a laugh, "Yes ma'am." and then he wheeled himself out of sight, stopping before he went completely out the door to give a little wave. "I'll be back." he smiled, and rolled himself completely out.
