Friendship Never Ends

Chapter 25

Rachel's P.O.V.
I really wanted to switch positions but I couldn't. My stupid leg has to be propped up and therefore I can't move. Why did I have to be such an idiot? I couldn't sleep because of this and also my leg was giving me so much pain.
Looking over at the clock, I saw it read: 1:34. I'd been trying to sleep for at least 3 hours now and nothing. I thought I was drifting off to sleep before but nope, my eyes just closed. My body was ready to sleep but my brain wasn't and it won't stop sending pain signals to my foot. Thanks.
I didn't want to but I had no choice. I decided to wake up Niall.
"Niall?" I whispered, trying not to awaken Harry or Steph. He didn't respond, so I found a pillow on the floor next to the couch and threw it at him. He jumped up and he was onto his feet in almost 3 seconds.
"What? What?! Is everything okay?" he immediately declared, really loudly, too.
"Ssshh! Don't wake up Steph and Harry," I scolded.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?" Niall asked, walking over to me.
"I can't sleep," I admitted.
"Is it your leg?" he questioned.
"Partially," I revealed.
"So my kiss didn't help, huh?" Niall said, leaning over me.
"It did for a little bit, but then it wore off," I confessed, looking up at him. I could just see a tiny bit of blue in his eyes even though it was almost pitch dark in the room.
"Will this one help?" he whispered. I could hardly make out what he was doing and before I knew it, his lips were on mine. I had no idea he felt this way about me until I put it all together: the hand-holding, the snuggles, the note and kiss on the cast...wow I'm such an idiot. How did I not see it before? My brain suddenly switched from that to how I felt about him and I realized that he's been there for me almost as much as Steph has, even though he lives in a completely different country. He's one of the nicest, friendliest guys I've ever been around and I can't believe I hadn't seen it before.
Just as soon as it started, he pulled away, but his face was only about an inch from mine.
"Better?" he asked, smiling. I looked away at his stare but he brought it back with a swift move of his hand. He lightly kissed me again before standing up and lifting my leg up.
"What are you doing?" I questioned, my eyes opening up wide but then also wincing in pain. He grabbed the pillows from underneath and moved them somewhere else. "Niall! I need those!"
"I know! Just shush!" he replied. I couldn't tell what he was doing and suddenly he was at my side again. "Hold on to me." I sat up and he placed one hand on my waist. I hooked my arm around his neck and he hoisted me up to my feet. This really hurt my leg but Niall guided me to the floor and laid me down, propping my leg up on the pillows he just moved.
"I just wanted to make sure you could sleep," he whispered before lying down and throwing a blanket over us.
"You jerk," I joked, turning my head to face him.
"Anything for my love," he replied. And cue the butterflies.
"I'm never going to get used to this," I told him.
"Well you better because I'm not stopping," he responded, scooting closer to me and wrapping his arms around me. How did this happen?!
Closing my eyes, I whispered, "Thank you." And I believe I heard an, "I love you," as an answer.

Harry's P.O.V.

Come on, Elijah, pick up the phone! I'd been trying to call him for the past 10 minutes but he won't answer his dang phone. Luckily we were all still home on this lovely Monday morning so I had time to do this.
"Hello?" I heard his voice say.
"Finally!" I exclaimed.
"Sorry, I've been taking care of him. He's not doing the greatest at the moment," Elijah explained.
"And that's why I've been calling you. Steph really wants to see him," I told him.
"She can't! He's not in the best condition," Eli replied.
"You're going to have to tell her at some point, mate. She's going crazy with all of this," I stated.
"I know, I know," he breathed, taking in a sigh on the other line. "I just don't know when the right time is."
"I told her I would talk to you and see if we could come soon," I blurted out.
"Harry!" Eli scolded.
"I'm sorry! She was begging me and begging me and I couldn't take it with that sweet face of hers!" I revealed.
"Figures," Elijah joked.
"Hey!" I warned, smiling a little bit.
"You're going to have to stall her. My dad needs to be in the right mode otherwise he'll go insane and I won't be able to calm him down. I don't want to scare Steph when she meets him."
"How long do you think it will be?" I asked.
"I'd say a few days, a week at the most. He doesn't even know she's here, but then again, he...well, you know," he informed.
"Yeah, I know. Okay, I'll try my best. Keep me updated, though," I replied.
"I will," he responded. "Thanks, for everything."
"Your welcome. In a way, you kind of are the brother I never had," I added.
"Okay, okay, we're not going that far," he chuckled. "Just take care of my sister, alright?"
"Will do, I promise," I asserted.
"Talk to you later," Elijah ended.
"Yup, bye," I said, and finished the call.
Oh boy. Now my job was to keep Stephanie from seeing her dad. She's going to worry even more when she realizes what's happened with him. I had a feeling this trip wasn't going to be as fantasizing as she expected.
"Harry, are you in here?" a voice called from outside of the door. Before I could have answered, it opened and Stephanie stood there with a look on her face.
"What?" I asked, shrugging my shoulders.
"I heard you talking. Were you on the phone with someone?"
"Yeah, why?" I questioned, getting nervous. "Did you hear any of that?"
"No, I didn't, and is there something I should know because you seem a little bit tense right now," she replied.
"I'm just worried about how this is all going to work now that Rachel can't exactly walk," I half-lied.
She rolled her eyes and I swear I think she knew that I was bluffing. "Okay, well, no matter what we do, I just want to get out of this house," she informed.
"Okay, okay, well, I know that there's a festival going on in Middlewich today," I suggested.
"They have a festival on a Monday?" Stephanie asked, raising her eyebrows.
"It's summer, they have festivals almost every day," I explained. "And you should know this! We used to go to them all the time."
Stephanie's face went blank and I believe she was trying to think back to those days. She looked at me with a confused expression.
"Please tell me you remember something," I pleaded. She glanced away and didn't answer for a while, so I tried jogging her memory. "Do you remember when we ran away from my mum for the first time and headed to the ferris wheel? She was so mad but she eventually found us and she couldn't get mad at us. And remember at the top you said everyone looked like ants because they were so small? And I told you that that's probably what birds think and you were surprised that they haven't tried eating you if they really did believe people are ants."
My head began spinning with all of the memories of us going to these festivals. We used to go to them almost once a week because Middlewich has a lot. With my mind active from this, my heart started yearning for those carefree days when I didn't need to grow up or think about my future. All I needed to know was that my best friend was having the time of her life with me.
Stephanie stared back up at me with a smile and she looked like she was about to cry. Suddenly, her arms wrapped around me and she gave me a tight hug.
"Yes, I do remember that," she whispered, not letting go.
"That's one of my favorite memories," I admitted. Stephanie pulled away and gazed into my eyes, giving me the signal to continue. "I remember when we were on the ferris wheel your eyes sparkled and your face was lit up with so much happiness. You never noticed but I was staring at you for a while and that's when I knew I really liked you. I would say love, but we were only six at that time and six year olds don't know what love is. But I felt something that night and I knew I could never lose you. That's why after you left to move to America...I cried for days. I never knew when I'd be able to see you again and my mum tried contacting you, but your mum never responded. Once I grew up, I...I found this girl and she had eyes similar to yours, so I figured she might be something like you. After a while of dating her, she was nothing like you and that's when we started video chatting and messaging and I realized what I was doing. So I finally broke up with her because I figured out that no one can replace you."
By this point, Stephanie was in tears. I've never told anyone this story. Jade never even knew and she didn't understand why I broke up with her because I lied and told her I was too busy for a girlfriend; which wasn't a complete lie, this was around the time I auditioned for The X-Factor.
"You-you almost replaced me?" Stephanie questioned.
"I didn't mean to. After years of having you in the back of my mind, I needed a physical something of you and she was the first person. But once you entered my life again, I understood that I basically just used her and I do feel bad for that but I didn't know what I was doing. And now you're here with me again and I've never felt happier," I explained.
"Oh, my God, Harry," she breathed, and fell into my arms.
"You're the only one I want now, the one I've realized I need. And this time, I promise I'm never losing you again."
She held on tighter and I've never felt this way before but I really liked it. Right there, right then, I was so glad I told her everything. I didn't know if I would have been able to keep that bottled up for a longer period of time.
A knock at the door caused us to break apart. Louis stood there just as startled as we were.
"Oh, sorry, am I interrupting?" he asked.
"No, we were just..." I started.
"Finishing up," Stephanie ended for me.
"Oh, ok, well, the boys and I were wondering what we're doing today so we can get ready," he explained.
"Oh! Alright, we're coming," I nodded. Louis also nodded his head and walked off, leaving us two in the room again.
"So you never forgot me?" Steph asked.
"Forget you? Steph, I could never!" I answered, facing her again.
"Me either. All throughout my days in America, you were always in my mind, somehow. Every little thing reminded me of you and I also never knew when I could see you again," she responded.
"And this is why we're perfect for each other," I revealed, smiling. She grinned back and I couldn't take it. I reached down and kissed her perfect lips, living in the moment. After all this time, I finally understood where I belong and I only hoped it was the same for Steph.
"We should...probably...go," Stephanie breathed in between kisses. I broke apart and began laughing because she was right, so I intertwined our hands and led her into the living room.
Everyone was gathered around the TV watching soccer and Niall and Louis were really getting into it. I could hear them yelling when Steph and I were having our conversation in the other room and it didn't sound pretty. I had an uneasy feeling when I stepped in front of the TV and blocked their view.
"Hey!" Niall shouted.
"You guys wanted to know what we're doing today, so I'm giving out a suggestion. Do you want to hear it or not?" I asked, impatient.
"Not in the middle of the game!" Niall answered.
"Hey, calm down. We can watch a rerun later," Rachel responded to him. He looked over at her before turning his attention to me.
"There's a festival in Middlewich today and I figured that's something we can do," I offered.
"Yeah, that sounds fun," Liam replied.
"Sure," Zayn agreed.
"Um, how is this going to work?" Rachel questioned, motioning to her wheelchair.
"Okay, um, I guess we'll just have to push you around. There's lots of other stuff to do besides the rides," I responded.
"Okay," she sighed and I felt bad for her. She's going to be restricted from doing most of the activities we'll be engaged in over the next few weeks.
"Alright, well, if we want to go, then let's get ready," I pushed, trying to motivate them. Slowly but surely, they followed my instructions and headed separate ways to get ready for the day.
Half an hour later, we were waiting in the living room for everyone and once we made sure we had everything, we climbed in the familiar car and Louis drove off. Middlewich is literally only about 5 minutes from Holmes Chapel, so we reached our destination pretty fast. The smell of food and the sight of the ferris wheel greeted us as we parked in the parking lot and stepped out of the vehicle. We carefully helped Rachel out and made our way to the front entrance to pay the fee. Once we were in, we had no idea what to do first. There was a long road ahead of us with food, games, and rides and I was pretty sure Steph and I were the only people who have ever been to this festival.

Stephanie's P.O.V.
Since Harry helped me recall the past memories of us at the Middlewich festivals, it felt like no time had passed when I stepped onto the familiar path with the festival on either side of it. The only thing I had in mind was what should we do first?
"Do you want to play the balloon game first? Throwing the darts to pop the balloons?" Harry asked me. "I remember that one time when you hit a balloon each time you threw the dart and you won that giant stuffed dog."
"You remember that?" I questioned, shocked. He nodded.
Suddenly, Zayn appeared at my side. "Hey, do you mind if we all go on our own?"
"Go ahead," Harry told him. "Um, why don't we all meet up at the front gate at 9:00?"
"Sure, I'll tell the others, thanks!" Zayn replied, rushing back over.
"Balloons it is," Harry decided, dragging me over to the stand. He paid the employee and she gave me 3 black darts. I chose to go for the blue balloon right in the middle, but it hit the deflated red one above, meaning no points yet. I aimed for a pink one a little higher than the middle ones, but again, it went right in between the pink and yellow balloons.
"Here, let me help," Harry suggested. He stood behind me and closed his hand over mine. "I'm thinking about the orange one to the left of where the last one went."
"Okay," I said, looking straight at it. Together, we threw the dart and surprisingly it hit a balloon! It wasn't the orange one we were aiming for, but a different blue one below it.
"Congratulations, you just won this colorful bouncy ball," the employee announced in a very boring tone. She handed me a rainbow bouncy ball and continued texting on her phone. Taking my hand, Harry led me back to the main road.
"I'll win you something better than that," he voiced, glaring at the balloon stand.
"Well, it's not too bad," I shrugged, tossing the ball in the air. I accidentally threw it too high and it slipped out of my fingers, bouncing away from us. We watched it roll down the street and go underneath a different stand.
"You were saying?" Harry chuckled, causing both of us to laugh.
"Harry? Harry Styles?!" someone shrieked from across the road. Two little girls rushed over to us with overly excited expressions. They looked about 10 years old.
"Uh, yeah, hi," Harry greeted.
"Oh, my gosh, I can't believe it!" one of them said to her friend.
"Mum!" the friend yelled to an older lady. She stopped talking to whoever and ran over to us.
"What? What's wrong?" she asked, concerned.
"Look! It's Harry Styles!" the friend squealed.
"Oh! Hello there. Is my daughter bothering you?" the mother questioned.
"Oh, no, not at all!" Harry answered.
"Mum, do you have a pen and paper?" the girl eagerly asked. The mum sighed and looked through her purse, digging out a Sharpie and a piece of paper. She handed them to her daughter who handed it to Harry. He dropped my hand and signed the slip of paper.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" the girl screamed.
"Can you sign my shirt?" the other girl asked, turning around and holding her hair up.
"Sure," Harry agreed, pressing the Sharpie to her back and autographing her shirt.
"OMG!" the girl screeched.
"Well, it's nice meeting you," the mother spoke. "Come on, girls, we don't have much time left."
"Bye, Harry!" the girls said in unison, giving him a hug before the mum grabbed them and walked off. I couldn't help but laugh at this situation.
"What? It happens," Harry defended.
"I know, I just haven't seen it yet," I giggled.
"You know, it's going to happen to you soon," he added, taking my hand and walking.
"What?" I asked.
"Well, you're going to be famous soon, too. I'm not keeping you in secret," he explained.
"Oh, boy," I replied, feeling the pressure.
"Don't worry, it's not bad," he assured me.
"I'm holding you to that, Styles," I responded, smiling.
"So, what would you like to do now?" Harry questioned.
"Surprise me," I answered.
For the rest of the day, Harry took me on my favorite rides, bought me yummy food, and even won me a gigantic stuffed bear with a heart that says "I love you" on it. I couldn't believe that I missed out on this while in America and even though we do have something like that where I live, I like the one I've grown up with the most. And doing it all with my best friend, or now the guy that I love, has to be the best part.
We still had a few minutes left until 9:00 and Harry purposely left the best for last.
"And now it's time for the ferris wheel," he announced, leading me over to it.
"I can't believe you," I told him.
"What do you mean?"
"Are you doing all of this for me?"
"Well...yeah," he shrugged, looking away.
"I love you," I smiled. Harry glanced back up at me and I hugged him tight.
About 2 minutes later, we were climbing inside the small, circular car connected to the long poles of the ferris wheel. Honestly, I hadn't been on one since I left and I figured out that this is the only ferris wheel I've ever been on.
"The city looks so pretty," I breathed as we ascended up. The city lights and the colorful festival lights lit up the sky and tears clouded my vision.
"Just like you," Harry whispered and I looked over to see him staring at me.
"Are you trying to recreate the memory?" I asked him.
"I'm creating a new one," he answered, leaning closer to me. And as soon as our lips touched, I could feel the ferris wheel stop escalating and begin descending, definitely a moment I'll never forget.

Notes

Ok so my computer's version of Word doesn't tell me how many words I've written and Wattpad does, so when I was finished writing this chapter and I copied it into Wattpad, it told me I had 3,454 WORDS! I CAN'T BELIEVE I WROTE THAT MUCH! But I'm glad because that means it's a longer chapter for you guys and you deserve it because I've been a complete shit at updating.
