Friendship Never Ends

Chapter 2

"Harry!" I screamed. "Harry, mummy said not to go over here!"
"Don't worry, Steph, I'll be careful," Harry replied, stepping on the log.
"Harry, no, please come back," I begged. He turned around and faced me.
"Steph, I'll be alright. I've done this before."
"Yeah, but it's really wet and you could slip," I reminded him. He gave me a look before twisting his body back around.
I walked towards the log and looked down. The dip is really deep, and if he falls, he could get hurt. I knew we shouldn't have come out here.
"Harry, please!" I pleaded.
"Shush, I'm trying to focus," he said.
I watched as he set one foot in front of the other, slowly walking across the wet, mossy log. He was almost halfway there when his brown boot slid off the side of the log, causing his weight to shift to one side. In slow motion, gravity took over and he fell down to the blackness below.
"Harry!" I yelled, trying to move my legs to reach out to him, but they wouldn't budge.
"Harry!" I repeated, my legs suddenly feeling sore. I snapped my eyes open to realize I was in a seat. My mum looked at me confused but worried, her hands on my shoulders.
"Stephanie," she said. I took in deep breaths as I inspected my surroundings. I was on a plane with people surrounding every inch of me.
"Steph, are you all right, honey?" my mum asked. I gulped and tried to find the words I was looking for.
"Y-yeah, I think so," I replied. "But Harr-"
"Ssshh, it's ok. We'll be landing in Milwaukee in an hour," she shushed me. She took one more look at me before taking her hands off of my shoulders and settling into her seat.
The next hour felt like an eternity. I couldn't get the image out of my head of Harry slipping and falling. I hoped nothing like that has actually happened to him while I've been gone.
We landed in Milwaukee and it took us another hour to grab our stuff and get out of there. It was about 11pm by the time we located the exit. My mum called a taxi to take us to our hotel that we booked for that night. We would be seeing our new house tomorrow.
My family and I arrived at the hotel and we checked in. The minute we entered our room, we were all fast asleep. I was surprised I fell asleep again, considering I took a 6 hour nap on the plane. Oh, well, you can never have too much sleep.
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of my mum getting ready in the morning. Not long after I got up, the rest of my family did, too. We descended to the lobby, where an employee showed us the hotel's restaurant. I didn't realize how hungry I was until I could smell the scent of breakfast. Their food here is similar to what we have back home, but some things were very foreign. I took whatever food I recognized and finished first. Not bad for my first meal in America.
After breakfast, we headed back up to our hotel room and grabbed our things. We checked out and called another taxi to take us to our new house. The ride was about 10 minutes long, and I couldn't help but notice how many things were different here. It felt really weird, and I didn't think I was ever going to get used to this.
The taxi driver pulled up in front of our house in a nice neighborhood. From the outside, our house looked a lot bigger than what we had in England, but the inside felt even bigger. As I checked out each of the rooms, my eyesight appeared blurry and salty tears slid down my cheeks. I didn't like this feeling, coming to this huge place and being told that you're living here for the rest of your life. I ran up the stairs and entered an empty room, shutting the door behind me and sliding my back against the door. The tears came pouring out, never ceasing. I cried for what seemed like hours, but in reality, only a few minutes. They finally began to stop when I heard my mum calling my name to come and help her. I gathered up as much courage as I had left and exited the room, climbing down the stairs and helping her unload boxes and bags.
The rest of the day was summed up by unpacking and shopping for furniture. We accomplished setting up the living room and the kitchen, but none of our bedrooms were started. We ended up all sleeping in the living room with sleeping bags and pillows, as if it was a sleepover. I was exhausted from crying and holding them back while setting up, and it took me a little bit to actually fall asleep.
Three weeks later, our house had been for the most part set up, with everyone's rooms in order and most of the furniture and decorations put up. School was apparently starting tomorrow, and my mum signed me up for Grade 3. I didn't want to go to school, unless I was back in England where I belonged, going to school with Harry. Harry! I hadn't thought about him in a few days. I felt guilty when I realized that, but ever since we moved in here, he's been in the back of my mind. Not always completely thinking about him, but he's just there. I wished I was with him right now. Then this weird feeling inside of me would just go away.
That night was restless, nonstop images of going to school without Harry and the nightmare of Harry falling. By the time I woke up, my blankets had wrapped around me tightly. I pulled my arm out and peeled the blankets off of my body. I got dressed and ready to go to American school for the first time. I was nervous and shaking like crazy while eating breakfast. I told my mum I didn't want to go, but she told me I had to.
She drove me to school and walked me inside. I met my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Nelson, and she seemed nice. Her and my mum talked for a little bit before Mrs. Nelson showed me my desk. I sat next to a brunette girl who was faced away from me chatting with a blonde haired girl. Mrs. Nelson stood up in front of the class and introduced me. Everyone seemed interested in me being from England, and the lump in my throat returned. I didn't cry, although I was close to it.
Recess begun that day and I didn't know where to go, so I just sat on some steps, watching everyone. All of a sudden, the brunette girl saw me and walked over to me.
"Hey, you're Stephanie, right?" she asked.
"Yeah," I replied.
"Do you mind if I sit next to you?" she questioned.
"No, go ahead," I responded, scooting over so she had room. She moved forward and sat on the same step as me.
"I'm Rachel," she introduced. I smiled. "It's cool that you're from England. You must miss it, huh?"
"Y-yeah," I said, looking away while my smile disappeared.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean..."
"No, it's ok."
"Ok, well, if you want to, you can join me and my friends over there by the jump ropes," she invited, standing back up.
'I'm ok sitting here," I declined.
"Ok," she said, and before she left, she looked back at me one more time.
Rachel's P.O.V.
I didn't want her to feel left out, but she said she was fine sitting there by herself. I played jump rope with my friends until the bell rang saying that recess was over. All of us went back inside and to our classroom. When I entered the classroom, Stephanie wasn't back in her seat yet, but I made a plan to get her to be my friend.
After school, before I left the room, I asked Stephanie if I could ask her a question.
"Yeah, sure," she answered.
"Do you want to come over to my house today?" I asked her.
"Um, I'll have to ask my mum, but..."
"Please?" I begged.
"Ok," she finally responded, smiling. I smiled back at her and we walked out of the classroom together.
We reached the parking lot and I found my mom waiting in the car for me. I started stepping over to her, but then turned around and waved at Stephanie to come over by me. She obeyed and we strolled to the car. I opened the door and introduced Stephanie.
"Hey mom, this is Stephanie and she's from England!" I began.
"England? Wow!" my mom replied.
"Can she come over today?" I asked.
"I'll have to talk to her mom, if that's ok," my mom communicated. "Sweetie, do you know where your mom is?"
"Um..." Stephanie looked around and then spotted her mom a distance away. "Yeah, she's right there."
My mom got out of the car and Stephanie led the way over to her. Our moms talked for a little bit and Stephanie was able to come over!
We drove to my house and I showed her my room. We played outside for a little bit, then baked cookies with the help of my mom. We had so much fun!
Stephanie's P.O.V.
After school, I went home with Rachel and I got to see her house. We played outside on her trampoline for a while, and then with her mum, we baked cookies. We got a little messy, but I didn't care. This is the first time I've felt happy since we moved here.
Dinnertime came and my mum picked me up to go home. I didn't want to go home, but I'd see Rachel again tomorrow, so I didn't push it.
We drove home and the entire ride was me talking about what Rachel and I did. I had a lot of fun and I couldn't wait to see her again. When I went to bed that night, it was peaceful. I was happy. And that gave me hope that maybe living here isn't so bad.
And that's how Rachel and I became best friends.
