Abby slid over to me during the movie, pressing up against me. I didn’t know what to do. My other arm was around Harry, and he had told me he didn’t like me cuddling with her if we weren’t in public. I wanted to respect that, knowing I would probably feel the same way if the roles were reversed. But I didn’t want to upset Abby, either, and I cursed myself for being such a people pleaser. Why did it even matter if I upset Abby? She was only in my life because of a contract. And while we got along great and I did consider her to be a friend now, Harry came first. What was the worst that could happen – Abby would get mad at me? It was better than Harry getting mad at me. Besides, Abby was an actress, so she’d just have to pretend not to be mad at me in public. I had to remind myself she wasn’t actually my girlfriend, so it was okay if I didn’t treat her like she was. However, it never came down to me having to upset her, because Harry spoke up.
“Okay, you know what, Abby?” he said, leaning around me to look at her as soon as she snuggled up against me. “There’s no reason for you to have to cuddle with Louis unless you’re in public. You already get all of his time, what more do you need?”
“Harry,” I said, although part of me was glad he had said something – he knew there was a good chance I never would.
“I’m just trying to keep up with the appearance,” Abby replied, clearly taken aback at Harry’s surprise outburst.
“You don’t need to when it’s just the three of us!” Harry told her. Abby stayed glued to my side, though.
“It helps me dive into the role,” she said, her voice timid.
“Drop the act,” Harry said. “You’re in love with my boyfriend and you know it.”
“Whoa,” I said.
“What?” Abby exclaimed, standing up, and then Harry and I rose as well. “No, I’m not, but, I guess I’ll take that as a compliment to my acting skills.”
“You don’t have to act when there aren’t any cameras on you! There’s no reason for you to hang out here, at the house, and be all over Louis.”
“Harry, I invited her,” I reminded him.
“I thought we were all friends,” Abby said, and her voice broke.
“No, because you’re trying to steal my boyfriend from me,” Harry told her. I had no idea where any of this was coming from – he hadn’t mentioned a word about it to me.
“I’m not,” she shook her head and started to cry.
“Abs,” I said, gently.
“No,” she grabbed her purse. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to intrude in your lives, I just – I don’t know a lot of people out here so it was nice to feel like I had friends for a change. I’m sorry, I’ll – I’ll stop coming around.” She turned and left. I looked at Harry, dumbfounded. He looked like he felt bad, though, and he darted after her, following her out of the house. I remained inside, deciding they needed to work this out on their own.
