Louis was awake. Louis was awake, and alive. Louis was awake, and alive, and we were together. He had forgiven me. He took me back. I had almost caused him to die, and he still took me back. At least, I was pretty sure that’s what he’d decided, he didn’t actually say it but he was certainly acting like it. I would clarify with him when I went back to his room after Zayn was finished talking to him – probably scolding him for having said he quit the band.
“Feel better?” Niall asked me, pulling me from my thoughts. We were in the hospital cafeteria, and I hadn’t realized how hungry I’d been until I took a bite of food. I finished the whole meal, much to the content of Liam. I nodded.
“Thanks, you guys, for everything,” I said, sincerely. “I couldn’t have handled this without you.”
“We’re just glad Louis’s okay,” Niall said, and Liam and I nodded in agreement.
We went back up to Louis’s room, but I had to wait to talk to him because the doctors were running some more tests. As I waited in the waiting room impatiently, I drove myself crazy with thoughts about whether or not he thought we were still together. Finally, they were done with him, so I went back to his room, the other three having left to set up the surprise we had planned for Louis that night. Louis smiled at me when I walked in, and I sat down in my chair next to his bed.
“You look distraught,” he observed. I frowned, and looked at him.
“We’re okay, right?” I asked, nervously.
“I hope so,” he said, and I felt myself slowly piecing back together. “I mean, if you can forgive me for being the worst boyfriend ever.”
“What are you talking about?” I stood up and took his hand.
“I made the only person in this world who I love with all my heart think I didn’t love him,” Louis explained. “Clearly I’ve been doing something wrong.”
“No, no, Lou, that was all insecurities on my end, it’s nothing you’ve done wrong. I just don’t know how you can forgive me for all the horrible things I said.”
“You were scared,” Louis shrugged. “I get it. As long as you still love me, then it’s all okay.”
“I do,” I nodded. “I love you, so much.”
“Then don’t ever do that to me again,” he said, firmly, and then he smiled.
“Don’t ever scare me like this again,” I replied, indicating the hospital room, then I climbed back in Louis’s bed with him. “Are you okay?” I asked, emphasizing the “you”, knowing that the news about the cab driver had really gotten to him.
“I will be,” he nodded slowly. “As long as I have you, Harry.”
“Always,” I kissed him, immediately reminded of why I loved that boy so much.
I stayed with Louis the rest of the afternoon, and we watched a movie on the TV in his room. Zayn texted me around dinner time and said they were on their way with the surprise for Louis, and I couldn’t wait to see his face when he saw it.
