Hey Jude I & II

Skewed Lines

There’s twenty or more things going on at once. People’s heads are spinning and legs are running, its thirty minutes till Skewed Lines takes the stage. The audience has no idea what they are in for but after hearing their songs numerous times yesterday through the full day of sound check, I’m honest when I say this band is great. The chemistry on stage is phenomenal though I wish I could say the same behind the curtains.

I did nothing but observe each band member and the only person that didn’t seem the least bit worried was Billy; even Troy looked nervous out of his mind. He’d huff after each song and wipe is arm over his forehead to rid himself of the pearls of sweat. Zac looked intense and almost frightening. It was only when he sang that his face would transform, otherwise he was stiff lipped and not really tending to Kaycee.

Kaycee fronted a controlled demeanor, but her eyes said the opposite . . . sheer terror. Her voice cracked a couple of times and it was then that we saw the perfectionist side to Zac, harshly reminding her not to do it again. Anyone would be mortified, it didn’t take a genius to guess how Kaycee was feeling. My eyes would jump straight to Troy for his reaction; his eyes looked sympathetic but his jaw clenched tight. After the third time, I wished he would speak up and defend Kaycee, but I could understand his reluctance.

My heart is excited for them. In the little time I’ve gotten to know them, whether close or distant, they are a part of the tour family. Both bands speak very fondly of each other and as long as the drama is jarred with a tight lid, I believe Skewed Lines will have a great shot.

The One Direction boys are in their dressing room just relaxing and being rascals. I try avoiding the cameras that are recording their every move, and just when I think the coast is clear in the hallway, Harry pops out from a large cardboard box wearing a gold costume mask. The mask was given from a fan outside, it’s an imitation of the gold mask from The Gold Museum here in Bogota. It’s a horridly creepy mask if you ask me.

Harry laughs as he reveals his identity and I charge to punch him in the arm or his side. Like a feline, quick on his reflexes, he dodges my blows and smirks harder with each one. I don’t have time for this, I have to go out to our assigned area and soak up the opening act’s first performance. Harry should be getting dressed or something more productive than playing pranks on me. Noticing Shelly at the end of the hall, she waves for me to follow her.

“I have to go, silly!” I stick my tongue out at the tall monkey as he climbs out of the box, only wearing his jeans.

“What? No time for a quickie?” he winks.

“Hah! Fat chance! My head is spinning and my stomach is in knots . . . so unless you want me to puke on you midway . . .”

“I’ll risk it!” He shouts and raises his arms in the air with an unforgivable grin. “You still look beautiful when you're flustered!”

Easily ten steps away from him I stop abruptly and spin on my heels. I must run back to him. Opting for a black tank top, leggings with an Aztec pattern and sandals, I proceed with my next move. I leap into Harry’s arms and rapidly wrap my legs around his waist as he sustains my weight with ease. Careful to not mess his hair, I impose on his lips and inhale his breath till he coughs.

“Oh that’s it!” Harry exclaims.

Granted we are right by the restrooms where there is less traffic, but there are still people present. I squirm to release his grip but it’s all in vain.

“Harry, no! I can’t, I have to go meet Shelly! She knows that I’m with you and if I take any longer. . .”

It’s pointless, I try and explain and it’s like reasoning to a child why a cupcake isn’t breakfast but a pancake is. It’s like a reverse piggy back ride but I have no idea where he’s running to. The only thing I know is the further he gallops the less commotion I hear from our group. These halls are looking sketchier and sketchier, all we need is some psycho to jump out and murder us right before his first concert.

“Settle love,” he lowers me and turns into another hallway where a security guard stands watch. “It’s a short cut.”

I laugh, embarrassed, and give him another kiss. “Have fun out there!” I wink.

“Always!”

I’m led towards my seat and see Lou already there. There’s something about live music that enraptures me. The fact that I’m about to see Harry and his mates perform is so overwhelming. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know these goofy boys and now I’m about to witness the hysteria that they’ve injected into the hearts of girls all over the world; starting tonight in Columbia.

It’s dark, all the lights are out except for the tiny specs from the thousands of phones and cameras; it almost mimics the night sky. Stage lights flash and the first guitar riffs echo through the vast sea of people. Skewed Lines start with World On Fire. The music is different than One Direction’s style, but I think that’s what caught their attention. Still, their songs hold their uniqueness from one another. It’s hard to find just one genre for them; and we all know how the boys like breaking all sorts of stereotypes.

Zac’s voice is peculiar, he can make it sound thin and nasally but then completely change it into a low and normal tone. Billy wrote this song with him, and while it’s catchy, I can’t wait for Troy to sing his song. He claims to have written it for some girl he had a crush on in school, but I know it’s about Kaycee.

They transition into the next song with a bang, stronger electric guitars and synths are only a few key elements to their song Stadium Love. They sound great and Kaycee is killing it with her powerful vocals. She was born for the stage, I dare say she shines more than the rest of them. I look around and snap pictures of the girls around me dancing and moving to their songs. There’s an astounding reaction to their music; I have yet to find a disappointed face in the crowd.

Next is Under The Tide and then Troy’s Sleep Well, Darling. The only ballad the band is set to perform and in my opinion, it’s the only one I can actually feel a connection to. Billy and Zac both play acoustic guitars and that’s all the instruments you hear for now. It baffles me to think that Kaycee has no clue that these lyrics are for her.

“Who said love should be this hard
Who said hearts should break apart?
I know, maybe I should mend this
Pull out the glue, maybe I can fix this

I'd approve of this change
If the change hadn't meant you changed how you felt about me
It's a treacherous thing, when the one that you love is finding a new love

You're running away from things that matter more than you know
You're chasing a love that could never love you as much as I do

My eyes have seen these streets, I've walked this road
Every time I look back all I see is your face, my darling
My eyes have seen these streets, I've walked this road
Every time I speak my words just say, "don't go" my darling. . .”

Troy’s voice is so vulnerable and raw, even playing behind the drums; he delivers. The song blasts into the most electrifying part, with bright lights blazing the entire stage. It seems as though in an instant Zac and Billy had traded in their acoustics to their bass and electric guitars. Yet it’s Troy’s heart trembling drums that give me the shivers. I look around and take a quick video of them and the tiny lights swaying in the stadium. They must be ecstatic!

They finish off their performance with On Our Way, a fun and catchy tune with hopes of being their first single. They’ve already started piecing together the clips for the music video, expecting to culminate once they reach the North American leg of the tour. Kaycee was so hard on herself but her performance is flawless, from her vocals to the keyboard. I need to make sure I tell her this, she could use more encouragement.

The stage disappears into the darkness once again as the musicians set up. I’m very proud of the band but I can’t wait to see Harry in all his splendor. I may just scream louder than the girls in the back rows.
