Chapter 18
'What!!??' Niall, El and I shouted. Dr Guille put Gemini in her cot with her sister and sat on a chair.
'I took Gemini to a cardiologist, Dr Archer, and he agreed that her heartbeat was irregular, so we decided to see what was happening and did an echo.' He said to us.
'What is an echo?' Niall asked.
'It's basically an ultrasound but for your chest.' Dr Guille explained,'Anyway we did an echo and found a hole between the two ventricles. The hole was made on day 20 of the pregnancy.'
'Is there anyway she can be ok?' I asked.
'Yes we can operate on her now, if you are willing to go through with. Operating on a newborn baby could be fatal because she might not be able to cope with anaesthetic. If you don't go through with it I think you'd be able to keep her alive for about 2 weeks. It's your decision. I'll leave you alone a bit to decide.' Dr Guille left the room.
'Niall this is all my fault!' I said.
'No it's not! No one could of predicted it to happen.' He said trying to calm me. I wanted to explain to him but I couldn't. I was losing it.
'Actually Niall we could of predicted it.' El said.
'How?' He asked.
'It runs in our family.' She explained,'Every second daughter born gets this hole. Our grandmother's younger sister had one, our mother had one and Juliet had one...'
'Juliet... Why didn't you tell me?' He asked.
'Because it's embarrassing! At school it stopped me doing all the sports and I was known as the 'Scar baby'. It would stop people loving me if they knew that their second daughter was going to have to have a maybe fatal operation!' I shrieked.
'But I never saw it. Like when I made love with you.' He said.
'It's a really faint scar now...' I said. El untied my hospital gown and pulled it down pass my boobs. I pointed at the small faint, ghostly, white line that separated my chest in two. Niall bent down and kissed it gently.
'Get a room you two.' El said shielding her eyes. I tied my gown back up. One of the babies started to cry. It was Gemini.
'I think she needs feeding.' Niall said.
'I can't feed her. She's going to be operated on.' I said.
'So you decided.' Dr Guille said coming into the room again.
'I think I want her to have the operation. Besides my great aunt Phyllis survived it, my mother Hayley survived it and I survived it so I am sure that Gemini will survive it.' I said. Dr Guille picked Gemini up and out of her cot and took her away from us. Niall got Aislyn and placed her in my arms. He took my hand and we sat there. Hoping, believing that Aislyn won't be our only one.
