Chased Across the World
Ring Ring
"Hey, so what's the plan today?" Callie asked as she walked back into my room, heading straight for the top drawer of my dresser. She started leaving clothes here a really long time ago, saying that one day she may need them. Guess she was right.
"Cal, what is this?" I asked with a shaky voice, holding the phone out for her to see. She gave me a weird look as she walked over and took it from my hand. After a moment or two, her face drained of color. She looked like she saw a ghost. "Cal? What's wrong?" I forgot how confused I was from the texts, instead worry consuming me. She shook her head, as if she was snapping out of a dream, her wild eyes searching mine.
"Nothing." she aid, "Why?" I eyed strangely, but deciding to go along with what she asked.
"Well, you were texting Ethan."
"Oh, yeah." Her words were slow and somewhat dazed. What's up with her?
"And?"
"Well, he wanted to work together to find you, since the police were doing shit." I nodded, understanding a little bit.
"I'm sure the police were working hard, Callie. But I thought you hated him."
Ignoring the first part of what I said, she replied, "Still do."
"Then why were you texting him?"
"I don't know."
"Callie-"
"I don't know okay! All I wanted to do was find you and I guess I took what I could get." She was standing facing me, arms out wide as if she was going to give someone a hug.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, hugging her tightly. "I'm sorry, okay. But I'm back now." She nodded. There were a few minutes of silence as we sat down on my bed.
"Cal?" I muttered, breaking the tranquility of the moment.
"Hmm?"
"Why did you look so scared when you read the texts?" She twisted her head to face me.
"Just surprised by one of the texts." I nodded.
"Which one?"
"The regret one."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"I'm sure he was just really worried about both of us." I saw her bob her head, knowing that she didn't fully believe me. But I couldn't do anything to change that. She's always disliked and not trusted Ethan, more so after our breakup.
"Jasmyne?" A soft voice asked from outside my door, followed by a light knock.
"Yeah?" I called, not wanting to get up and open the door. It swung open, revealing my mother clad in a sweater and jeans, already dressed for the day.
"The police will be here shortly. We decided to have them here today, since you were asleep last night." I could hear the disappointment in my actions, but what was I going to do? I was crazy tired!
"You could have woke me." I mumbled, but she just shot me a look that said don't. "Be right down." She nodded, shutting the down behind her. I could hear the click of her heelson the wood floors as she walked away.
"Damn, your mom hates me." Callie commented, forcing me to laugh.
"She does not."
"Does too!" Callie insisted, sitting up as I got up and moved over to my closet. I stuck my tongue out at her as I grabbed my outfit for today and went into the bathroom to shower and get ready. It took about 15 minutes to get it all done. All II did was throw my hair in a ponytail, brush my teeth, and shower. Not like I need to dress to impress. I walked back into my room.
"So, should i-"
"No, you're staying." I stated, before she even asked the question. She nodded, getting up and standing by my side.
"Let's do this shit." She smiled at me and I just shook my head, faking defeat. Her laughter chimed in my ears.
RRIINNGG!
I spun around, eyeing my telephone on the wall. My parents had insisted on putting a home phone in my room. Why? I don't know. But I guess it comes in handy when your cell is dead. I told Callie to go on downstairs as I grabbed the phone. Holding to my ear, I answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Hello Jasmyne. They said I'd find you."
