Chased Across the World
Guilty Till Proven Innocent
Callie's POV:
It's been about a week since I agreed to work with Ethan. And I still hate him. Maybe more than I used to. I don't see how that's possible, but it must be because that's what's happened. Every day, he comes up to me, asking about if I've got anything new. It's the same answer every time. Nothing. Why can't he just give me space? I can't think with him suffocating me. He's like the overprotective mother I don't have. Thinking of my mother, I wonder what she'd say if she knew what I was up to. She'd probably say in her perfect little voice, "Callie, honey, as long as you're safe." Ugh. It fucking pisses me off.
"Miss Harper." Shit. I zoned out in class again. I snapped my head up to the front of the room, eyeing the teacher suspiciously. Lately, everyone is suspicious. Hmm...I wonder why?
"Yeah?" I said. I stared at the woman in front of me. She was an ordinary female, simple brown hair pulled into a taunt bun, no wisps of hair astray. Her brown glasses were perched on the end of her perfectly pointed nose. Hard grey eyes scanned the room coldly. Yup, this was my least favorite teacher. Can you tell?
"Are you going to answer the question?" Well, she already hates me so...fuck it.
"No."
"And why not?" Because you're an annoying bitch?
"Because I'm not in the mood." The teacher opened her mouth to reply, but the scream of the bell cut her off. Sending her a flashy smile and ignoring the rest of the classrooms whispers, I dashed out of the room before she could stop. She must be used to my behavior by now because she didn't even attempt to stop me. I turned another corner in the hall before pausing to catch my breath. People shuffled past me on their way to 8th hour. Thank god, it's the last period of the day. I just stood and watched as bodies flooded past me. God, we are all like robots. Go to class, learn, leave class and repeat. Just kill me now.
"Callie!" I turned to see Ethan jog up next to me. I groaned inwardly. Not again.
"What?" I whined, the conversation already boring me. I really hope he doesn't think we're friends now.
"Anything yet?" Here we go...again.
"For the last time. NO!" I practically screamed at him. Ethan held his hands up in surrender.
"Okay, okay. Jeez." I groaned loudly, brushing past him as I headed toward my last class. I could hear him rush to catch up. Did that stop me? Hell, no. I entered my last classroom of the day, automatically heading to the back row. Ethan followed me. When's this boy gonna learn?
"Okay class. Today, we are going to learn about something really boring." Oh right, I forgot that last hour is my favorite. Or at least, the teacher is. Mr. Carter. Mmmm. Just his name sounds yummy. Ray Carter. Someone tell me that doesn't make you want to fuck him. I know why everyone else loves him. He's a great teacher, he's so funny, blah blah blah. I love him because he's hot. Very simple, right? Well, I guess he's pretty funny too. That's just a plus.
"The Byzantine Empire. Anyone heard of it?" No one spoke. "Neither have I." He sent the class one of his rockstar smiles and immediately all the girls began to laugh at his joke. Except me. I pride myself on being different. I watched as he headed around his desk to lean on the front edge. Yup, I checked him out. Head to toe. There's not a problem there.
He was different. This past few weeks, he's just been off. He has bags under his eyes that weren't there before. His eyes look tired and out of energy. Anyone I ask tells me he's have girlfriend issues. At first, I believed it. But now? Wouldn't a now-single guy like him have moved on by now. I know if I was a girl that wasn't his student, I wouldn't let him be single for long. But what do I know...right?
He continued to talk and I switched between listening and tuning him out. I probably shouldn't be doing that, but I have so much to think about right now. I can't help it. I need to help Jasmyne, not think about having mind-blowing sex with my teacher. Yes, I've thought about that before.
"So let me take attendance and then we can get started." Of course everyone was here except for the five boys that rarely show up anyway. I don't know their names, but they're pretty attractive. I think I've talked to them a few times. I continued my thoughts on them. Come to think of it, they've been missing a lot this past month. Then again, they miss a lot no matter what. This month is probably no different. Mr. Carter finished the count and we finally got started. Time to tune out.

So time flies when you're trying to figure out your best friend's kidnapper. In all reality, I think I've narrowed down my list of suspects. All the faculty are a possibility, though there were a few that I automatically crossed off my list. I made a mental note to check all of them out. Then there were the five guys were are like a group. But I know for a fact that Jasmyne's never talked to them before. Never mind, scratch them off the list. Then there are random students and family...which leaves me with like 100 people. Great... Let's get started Cals.

Mr. Carter's POV:
All the students exited my classroom when the bell rang, except one. Callie Harper. She looked lost in thought, but there were some..."Important matters" that I needed to deal with today. I sighed, making my way over to her desk. Remember to be professional, I silently scolded myself.
"Ahem. Miss Harper." Her head snapped up, eyes staring into mine. She looks like she's seen a ghost. I wonder why.
"What? 2 x times pie!" She replied automatically. I raised my eyebrows at her. She must have been really deep in thought. She's already blurting out math phrases.
"The bell rang." I said, pointing my finger at the clock. Speaking of time, I really need to go. This girl needs to leave...now. I have another job to do. One that requires more of my attention. She stood while blushing, grabbing her bag on her way to the door. Good, she's leaving. Now I can get to work.
"Mr. Carter?" Why won't she leave already? I turned to her, finding her gnawing on her lip in the doorway. I nodded to her in acknowledgement.
"Are you okay?" What?
"I don't understand, Miss Harper." Can we please stop with the questions now? Thanks.
"You seem stressed." She whispered. I met her eyes. "I know it's not my place to say it but-"
"You're right. It's not your place." Her eyes widened with what? Confusion? Surprise? Caution?
"I just wanted to let you know that if you're stressed about your job, you're a really great teacher. So you don't need to worry." If only she knew she was talking about the wrong job. She went to walk away after I didn't reply. But I stopped her with my voice.
"Miss Harper?" She spun around. "Did you know Jasmyne Warner?" Might as well ask and see how close people are to finding that bitch.
She nodded. "She's my best friend." Now I see. The best friend feels guilty.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Not. "Are the police close to finding her?" She narrowed her eyes just a bit at me. Go slow, Ray. She's got to trust you enough to tell you.
"Yeah, I think so. I just hope we find her in time." She bit her lip again.
"We?" Now she looked scared. Caught you, didn't I? I laughed inside my head. This game is fun to play. How bout another round?
"I mean they. The police." I nodded, pretending to be sympathetic. Teenage girls are so naive.
"Of course, Miss Parker." I'm gonna have to keep an eye on her. Figure out who this "we" is. "That's all. Have a good day."
"You too." She said, hurrying out of the room. I smirked to myself before sliding my phone out of my pocket. I sent a quick text to my boss in all this about how we may have trouble with the Callie girl. I reclined in my chair, waiting for an answer.
My phone buzzed.
