Never Let Me Go

Chapter 25

“Harry, you have to go sing something.” I nudge his arm as the owner of the café announces the beginning of their weekly open-mic night.

We came out for dinner here with Louis and Niall, and I picked where we would eat. I knew this place had an open-mic night, and ever since Harry sang to me back in New York after our fight, and opened up to me about maybe doing something with music for a career, I knew I needed to support him, because he was a little resistant to actually going through with it.

“I’m good, babe.” He smiled and picked at the french fries on his plate.

“Come on,” I begged him. He was making this a lot harder than it should be. I shot Niall a pleading look, hoping for some back-up.

“I’ll play my guitar, mate. Let’s go, you’re woman wants to be serenaded.” Niall added in. I gave him an appreciative look and mouthed a ‘thank you.’

“I don’t sing in public.” Harry shrugged. “Not my thing.”

“Oh come on, Haz, live a little. There’s like ten people here.” Louis said.

“There’s definitely at least fifty people here.” Harry tossed back. “But fine, let’s get this over with.”

I clapped my hands together and quickly kissed Harry’s cheek before he stood up.

“Let me go grab my guitar from my car.” Niall said and headed towards the door.

“What do you want me to sing, baby?” Harry asked me. I could tell he was still a little reluctant, but wanted to please me. I loved him all the more for doing that.

“Anything you want…” I said before an idea struck in my mind. “Wait, what about one of the songs you’ve been writing?”

“You knew I was writing?” He frowned. I nodded guiltily, hoping he wouldn’t get angry that I accidentally found a notebook one day while I was cleaning with his scribbles of lyrics written on the pages.

“I didn't read them, but I'm sure they’re really good, Harry. You should sing one of them.”

He let out a sigh. “Niall won’t be able to play them on his guitar.”

I knew he was just making excuses, but I didn’t want him to back out of singing, so I went along with it. “Okay, then play something else. Whatever you sing will be great.” I smiled and stood on my tip toes to kiss his cheek. “I love you.”

“Love you, too.”

With that, he joined Niall on the small stage at the back of the restaurant.

I sat back at the table with Louis and waited in anticipation for them to start. My eyes wandered around the café, and my heart began to beat faster when I saw the man I had been looking for.

“Uh, I don’t really sing for anyone but my girlfriend, but here goes nothing.” Harry said into the microphone before Niall started playing on his guitar. The crowd clapped and hollered, but my gaze was back and forth between Harry and the man in the crowd.

I'm sorry, mother... I'm sorry, I let you down
Well, these days I'm fine - No these days I tend to lie

I'll take the Western train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by my left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

I'm sorry, brother... I'm sorry, I let you down
Well, these days you're fine - No these days you tend to lie

You'll take the Western train, just by the side of Amsterdam
Just by your left brain, just by the side of the Tin man

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me... I've tried
But I keep coming up short

I'm sorry, lover... I'm sorry; I bring you down
Well, these days I try and these days I tend to lie

Kinda thought it was a mystery and then I thought I wasn't meant to be
You set yourself fantastically, "Congratulations you are all alone."

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me... I've tried
Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me... I've tried

But the rain won't fall for the both of us
The sun won't shine on the both of us
Believe me when I say,
That I wouldn't have it any other way

Your time will come if you wait for it, if you wait for it
It's hard, believe me... I've tried
But I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down
No I won't wait much longer 'cause these walls they're crashing down
And I keep coming up short

By the end of Harry and Niall’s cover of the Imagine Dragon’s ‘Amsterdam,’ tears had begun to spill from my eyes. I don’t know whether it was from the song, from the pride I felt for him, or for the anticipation of what was to come. Every time Harry sang, I fell more and more in love with him. Whenever he sings, it’s like he’s able to show how he’s truly feeling, more than he is able to by just his words, and it amazes me. Singing really is his passion, even if he doesn't realize that.

The entire crowd erupted with cheers and applaud, obviously enjoying the show just as much as I had. I was even more proud of him in that moment, and seeing the smile on Harry’s face made my heart throb.

After Harry and Niall returned to the table, we finished our meal as multiple people came up to tell him how great he was at singing. He took the compliments humbly, and I knew he was surprised to be receiving such praise. He deserved it.

Harry’s POV

Once we paid and were about to head out, we were stopped by a man in a black suit.

“Harry Styles, right?” He asked, extending his arm to shake my hand. He was in his late twenties or early thirties, pale skin and black hair. His American accent obvious.

“Yeah.” I gave him a confused look and instinctively stepped in front of Aubrey. I have no idea who this guy is, and I don’t trust that smile of his.

“I’m John Gordon.” He introduced himself before smiling at Aubrey and the guys.

“Uh, we’re gonna head out. Call us tomorrow, mate.” Louis announced and took off with Niall. I waved them off.

“You have quite the voice. Have you been singing for long?” The man asked me.

I shrugged. “For as long as I can remember. Just not for anybody, really… Why?” I asked him, curious as to why he would care, and why this particular man is here, looking so professional in a café, asking about me.

“I apologize,” he smiled. “I run a record label back in the states, and I couldn’t help myself from speaking to you. I’ve never heard a voice like yours. You have a wonderful talent.” He complimented me. Aubrey squeezed my arm, and I knew she was smiling without even looking at her.

“Thanks…” I offered. “Well, it was nice meeting you.”

I grabbed Aubrey’s arm and began toward the door, only for him to stand in front of us. “Hold on.”

I stopped and let out an exasperated sigh. What the hell does this man want? “What?” I snapped. I don’t know why I was getting so frustrated, but all I wanted right then was to be alone with Aubrey. It’d been a busy week of classes and I’ve had minimal alone time with her.

“Are you interested in doing anything with your music? Maybe coming out with an album, or a song or two?” He asked.

“No.” I answered honestly. Aubrey tried to convince me that I should do something with music, but let’s be real, it’s almost impossible to get a good job in the music industry.

“He’s still deciding.” Aubrey added in quickly.

“I think you should reconsider that.” John told me. “You have a voice that most labels are looking for, and I’d be stupid to let you leave without at least talking to you. Could I convince you to at least think about coming out to my label and recording a song or two? My producers would love to hear you.”

“Yeah, I’ll think about it.” I told him dismissively. I knew damn well I wouldn’t go out to his label that I’ve never heard of. Well, he never told me the name of his label, so I didn’t even know where he worked.

“Great. Why don’t I get your number, and I’ll give you a shout sometime this week. Give ya some time to think on this.” He smiled as he pulled his phone out for me to type in my number.

I briefly considered giving him a fake number, but I could practically feel Aubrey’s excitement radiating off of her, and I knew she would be upset if I didn’t even talk to him. Then I got confused as to why she had been so silent since this guy came up to us.

“I obviously think you should agree, but I’ll call you in a few days and we can talk some more. It’s a great opportunity Harry. I know potential when I see it; I wouldn’t have my own successful record label if I couldn’t. You’ve got what the world wants… Anyway, here’s my card. Call me if you have any questions before then.” He said handing me his card before turning and walking out the doors.

I looked down at the business card and almost dropped it out of my hand when I read it.

John Gordon. Universal Records.

“Holy shit, Aubs. He’s from Universal. I’m pretty sure that’s the label that Justin Timberlake and a ton of other famous people are on.”

“Harry, this is so amazing!” She beamed. “You’ll agree to this, right?”

“I don’t know…” I answered honestly.

“It’s a great opportunity, you can’t pass it up.”

“I’ll think about it,” I promised her and led her to the car.

She nodded, probably thinking that was better than nothing. I would think about it, but I was already pretty positive that I would decline his offer. There was no way it could work out.
