They Don't Know About Us

Chapter 27

*Harry's P.O.V*
“So how are you doing this?” Gemma questioned as we sat in our mum's house.
“I'm flying to the States two days before Justice is supposed to leave for London to have lunch with her dad.” I explained to her.
She nodded, “Yeah, but when are you going to actually propose?” She asked.
My shoulders shrugged. “I'm thinking around Valentine's Day. Perrie thinks it would be a good idea. Her and Katie have been going back and forth a lot.”
Gemma gave a slight frown. “I'm not sure about that. Not only are you throwing a big party, but you're proposing to her on a holiday. It's kind of pressuring her into saying yes, isn't it?”
“No,” I answered defensively. “I'm not trying to pressure her.”
“Jay doesn't know that.” My lovely sister pointed out. Worriedly I ran a hand through my hair. “Maybe you should choose a different day.” She suggested. “I have to go. I'm meeting up with girls later. Call me if you need any advice.” With that she stood and left.
I groaned loudly pulling out my mobile and finding the contact I was looking for. “Would Justice like a Valentine's proposal?” I asked immediately when the call was answered.
“What?” Katie's voice was filled with confusion. I pulled back my mobile seeing that it was only afternoon here. That meant it was early morning there.
“Sorry for waking you.” I apologized quickly. “But do you think she would like-”
“Probably not,” Katie interrupted. “It's really cliché if you think about it, but I can fish for detail.”
“Would you?”
“If it means I can go back to sleep, sure! I'll text you later with the verdict Harry.” The call disconnected leaving me to wonder about the important step I was preparing to take. No longer was the question rather or not I was truly ready to propose. I was! I wanted to make sure I spent the rest of my life with Justice and this was the first step of many to get there. Now the question was how would I propose? I wanted it be as close to perfection as possible. Justice deserved the best. I know that she was skeptical getting into this relationship and so was I. We both had shaky experiences in the past, but us together was better than I could have imagined. I loved her. We were made for each other. I just needed to know that she felt that way too.

*Justice's P.O.V*
I was folding the bottom on my brown accented skinny jeans when Katie barged into my bedroom. “I need a boyfriend.” She proclaimed while flopping on her back onto my bed.
“What?” I questioned highly confused.
“I need a new boyfriend.” Katie spoke while fingering the hem of her black blouse which she had paired with red skinny pants. “I want to be married by the time I’m twenty-five or at least engaged and I’m already nineteen.” She explained.
I frowned, “I know of a certain blond Irish lad who may or may not fancy you.” My voice was teasing.
Katie laughed lightly, “Once upon a time I would have jumped on that, but after having spent time with him, I think I’ll pass.” I laughed while looking at my reflection in the mirror attached to my dresser. “What about you?”
“What about me?” I responded a bit confused by whatever it was that she was asking me.
“When do you want to get married?” She questioned.
My shoulders shrugged. “I would like to at least be in a long-term committed relationship when I’m twenty-five.” I answered honestly. “As far as marriage itself, if I love the person and we’ve been together long enough and we I think we’re meant to be, then I’m willing to get married whenever.”
Katie nodded, “Would you accept a holiday proposal. Like say Harry proposed on Christmas-”
“He’s not going to propose on Christmas.” I interrupted. “Or anytime soon for that matter. We’ve been together all of three months.”
Katie rolled her eyes and continued talking. “If Harry proposed on Christmas, would you accept?”
I pondered her question for a moment before shaking my head. “Christmas, no, we haven’t been together long enough. Any other holiday, probably not, it’s kind of pressuring.” I responded. I was vaguely aware of Katie cursing under her breath before mumbling something about having to get ready for work and leaving out of my bedroom. I finished getting ready, stuffing my feet into my brown booties, grabbing my brown blazer, and placing a headband on my head to hold back the mess of curls. I was meeting some classmates for lunch before we went to the library to study for our midterms.
As I walked to my car, Katie’s strange questions played through my mind. We talked about the things we wanted for our future, but I could never remember a conversation like that. With a shrug of my shoulders I mentally reminded myself that Katherine Anderson could be an odd specimen from time to time. As I was waiting for the numerous lights in my dashboard to go off so I could start my car, my cell sounded letting me know that I had a new text message. A smile coated my lips as I responded to my green eyed boyfriend. Ugh I missed him! Which was crazy seeing as how I had just been with him one week ago and would be with him again in three weeks. Our plan was for me to fly to London two days after Christmas. I would be there until two days after New Year’s when I had to return for the beginning of the spring semester. I still didn’t have a gift for Harry. What do you get for the man who can buy himself anything he wants? The answer to that question, I did not know. I planned to spend the coming up weekend shopping for him. I wanted to get him something that would make him smile. Not that smile he did politely when he was in front of flashing cameras as thousands of people were screaming his name. A legitimate smile where his eyes screwed together and his nose barely crinkled. Those dimples of his were on full display and he face held as boyish glow. The smile that I had seen so many times. The smile that had reeled me in. The same smile that I had fallen in love with.

*Harry’s P.O.V*
Time was passing by a lot quicker than I wanted it to. Before I knew it, I was celebrating the winter holidays with my family and that night was at London International Airport about to fly to the States and meet with my girlfriend’s parents.
Katie was there waiting with her car when my flight got in. We realized it was safer for her to pick me up rather than for me to get a rental car seeing as how I didn’t want any unnecessary people knowing I was here. We drove from Huntsville to Florence discussing possible dates for the proposal.
“How about around Valentine’s day?” Katie suggested.
I frowned, “Justice told you about her hate for holiday proposals.” I reminded her.
Katie rolled her eyes. “I mean like, before, or after the actual day. That weekend fly both of your families wherever so they can meet. Take her on a romantic date the day of, then the next day propose at the party slash get together.” She planned out almost expertly.
“That’s a really good idea.” I admitted.
“I’m chalked full of them.” Katie shrugged her shoulders never losing focus on the road. “Just like I suggested that Perrie and I help you pick out the perfect ring for her while we’re in London.” She reminded me arrogantly. “I swear, Harold, you better give me some recognition when she says yes. I’ve sacrificed sleep for this.”
“Thank you. I do appreciate all of your help.” I gave her a friendly smile.
Katie once again rolled her eyes. “You know that polite mumbo jumbo only works on Justice. That girl is whipped when it comes to you.” I chuckled finding her words amusing. Humor was exactly what I needed right now.
“Any advice on how to do this?” I questioned when we neared the restaurant and I recognized Justice’s father, Chris, silver Lexus in the parking lot along with her mother’s, Tiffany, white Mercedes.
Katie pondered over her words before speaking. “Well her dad sees her as his little girl so he’ll be the toughest to break. While her step-dad is going to drill you about why you want to marry her. Her mom will be receptive, but hesitant. Her step-mom will more than likely not approve because you’re both young, but she won’t try to stop you. She’s a live and learn type of person.” I nodded. Alright Harry, you can do this. You are no longer a boy. You are a man who is in love and wants to spend the rest of his life with his girlfriend. Walk in there, play smart, and get their approval.
~~*~~
“So what I’m asking is that, um, you will allow me to-to marry Justice.” I stammered out. Four parental faces blankly stared back at me. My hands were clasped on top of the table and my foot lightly tapped the floor.
It was Justice’s step-mom, Aretha, who broke the awkward silence. “Don’t you think that you’re too young to be thinking about marriage?” She questioned just as Katie predicted. I shook my head preparing an answer when Tiffany spoke.
“How do you know she’ll say yes? My daughter wants to be more than a celebrity’s wife.” That was true. Justice had plans to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Art for political science and go to law school. She wanted to prosecute cases. I wouldn’t dare try to hold her back.
“I know that and I promise that I will not interfere in her studies.” I responded. The four of them were worse than any interviewer.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Earl, Justice’s step-dad, shook his head. “You live across the water. She ain’t moving that far away.” Shit. I mentally cursed. Of course the long distance would be the breaking factor. These were the same people who wouldn’t let Justice go on her senior cruise because she would be too far away if anything happened. They’re the ones who disapproved anytime she mentioned visiting her friend in the Bahamas during their summer break.
“I come to the States quite often and Justice could always come with me to visit her family. We could even purchase a house her.” I suggested hopefully.
“But how do you expect her to do when she’s in college?” Tiffany questioned.
“Speaking of college, would you want her to transfer, because that could set her back?” Aretha added. It went like that for the next thirty minutes. They asked questions and I did my best to answer them. Tiffany and Aretha were particularly opposed to the fact that I was away from home sometimes for half a year. They were not fond of having their daughter alone in a country she was not familiar with. I assured them that Justice wouldn’t be alone. And she wouldn’t be. She had my mum, Gemma, Perrie, and any other friends she made there.
When it became clear that they had asked all of their questions and I had answered them, we all moved our attention to Chris who had managed to stay quiet this whole time. Yet, being Justice’s biological father, he had the ultimate power. I liked to think he was fond of me. He didn’t give me the cold shoulder act when we first met. Now I was unsure. Would he say no? What would I do then? This was important to Justice. I knew that from light conversation. This was one tradition she was big on. And if I didn’t have her father’s permission, then I wouldn’t get a yes to my question.
He gave a heavy sigh running a hand over his bald head. His face gave away the internal conflict he was experiencing. Maybe I hadn’t pleaded my case enough. Maybe I hadn’t proved to them how much I loved her. Chris crinkled his nose the way his daughter does when she’s thinking and scratched his chin. Aretha placed a hand on her husband’s arm and he closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes,” he spoke in a low voice. The table was quiet.
“W-what?” I stammered not sure that I had heard him correctly.
“Yes.” He simply repeated not saying more. I nodded trying to contain my excitement. He stood with his hand outstretched. I quickly rose to my feet as well shaking hands with him. It was over. It was done. I got the permission that I needed. Now the hard part begun.
