Friendzone

Louis and Lacey walk out from their first grade class hand in hand. Before they get out of school completely, Jay has to have a meeting with Ms. Stark, their teacher.

Jay walks into the room, and sits across from Ms. Stark.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Stark." Jay greets.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Tomlinson." The teacher greets back, "I need to talk to you about your son's friendship with Lacey Smith. For a young boy, he's quite close to Lacey. Usually boys play with boys and girl play with girls. I think it might be unhealthy that they be friends."

"Excuse me that Louis is mature enough to not believe that girls have cooties. They have been friends since they were smaller, that's how it's always been. So don't criticize my child because he's friends with a girl, that's sexist." Johanna says, tired of getting told this by teachers. Last year it was the kindergarten teacher, a few months ago it was the art class they had been signed up for. Just last week, it was the drama class they had wanted to be in.

"Well then, I'm sorry to waste your time." Ms. Stark apologized. Jay storms out of the class room. She takes the hand of her son and the hand of Lacey. She walked them to the car, so she could get home.

"What's wrong, Jay?" Lacey asks, frightened by her best friend's mother's new mood.

"I'm sorry, sweetie. I'm just upset with your teacher." Jay sighs.

The rest of the drive home was silent. Lacey was unsure of how this winter break was going to go.
