Friendzone

"3, 2, 1! Ready or not, here I come!" Lacey yelled to Louis.

"You're not gonna find me, Lacey!" Louis shouts back from his parents bedroom. Lacey runs toward the source of the sound. She slowly approaches the wardrobe. She stops in front of it, her soft, small breath panting. Her hands silently grip the handles. Lacey counts to 3 slowly in a whisper before yanking the door open. She looks down at six year old Louis. Lacey's almost as old as him. She was born January, the next year.

Louis and Lacey have always been friends, when they were babies, their parents would put them in the same play pen. When they were toddlers, they would play together. And now, they still play together.

"How did you find me, Lace?" Louis asks.

"You shouted, silly. You're bad at this game." Lacey comments.

"Can we play tag?" Louis inquires.

"Okay." Lacey agrees. She then tags Louis. He chases her down the stairs until she stops at the bottom. Her world in spinning around her. It all turns black as she faints.

Lacey wakes up in a hospital bed. Her parents quickly run out of the room to check her out of the hospital. She then notices Louis on her left side on a chair holding her hand. She also notices his mother in the corner.

"What's wrong, Lou?" She than questions.

"The doctor says you're missing nutrience in your food, and that if you don't eat better, this will happen again." Louis answers.

"That's no big deal." Lacey says, unconcerned.

"I do have good news." Louis confidently says.

"What is it?" She asks, excited.

"Your mommy and daddy will be gone for a year, and you'll be staying with me and my mommy over that time.They'll be leaving tomorrow." Louis explains. Lacey starts to feel unsure. Who wouldn't miss their parents, but who wouldn't want to spend a year with their best friend?

"I don't know, Lou. I want my mommy and daddy, but I don't mind spending a year with you." She says, seeing her best friend's face light up with joy.

"We can stay up late, and watch movies, and eat candy, and play games, and make pictures, and-" Louis begins.

"Calm it down, Lou." Mrs. Tomlinson says.

"Hi, Mrs.Tomlinson." Lacey practically whispers.

"Hello sweetie. Are you feeling better?" She asks, "and remember, call me Jay."

"Yeah, especially since I get to spend a year with Lou." Lacey smirks.

"Well, let's get you out of here, so you can pack." Jay responds. She picks Lacey up, out of the bed and puts her on the ground, so she's standing next to Louis. They walk to the front desk where Lacey sees her parents. Lacey continues to hold Louis' hand. As they were trying to pull Louis away from Lacey to put them in different cars, they wouldn't let go.

"Do you want to take Lou, or do you want me to take Lace?" Jay asks Lacey's mom.

"I'll take Lou, since you're taking care of Lace for a year." Lacey's mother smiles.

"Okay, well see you there, Joan." Jay says.

"Louis and Lacey get into the backseat and Joan and Henry get in the front.

As they arrive at Lacey's home, Jay pulls into her driveway. Louis and Lacey live next door to one another. They all get to Lacey's home. The two kids look around at all of Joan and Henry's luggage.

Joan and Jay begin to talk. Then Johanna turns around.

"Help Lace pack, Lou." Jay says.

The two kids run upstairs and begin shoving clothes into suitcases on the bed. Joan and Johanna come upstairs into Lacey's room.

"Since Lace will be staying with us for so long, we decided that Lou will stay here tonight." Jay says to the kids.

Louis and Lacey then run next door to pack Louis' belongings for the night. By the time they finish, their mothers arrive in the room.

"What are you two doing?" giggles Louis' mother.

"I thought Louis was staying the night?" Lacey innocently whispers. She looks at the over flowing suitcase.

"He is, but he only needs pajamas and clothes for tomorrow." Joan answers.

"Oh," The two children say in unison.

"I'll get Louis some clothes." Jay says.

"I'll take them back to the house." Lacey's mother sighs. They walk back home.

They walk inside and Lacey's mom yells, "Henry!"

"Yes, Dear?" Henry asks from upstairs.

"Give Louis a bath."

"Okay." Lacey's father says taking Louis. Lacey's mother takes her to a different room as well to give her a bath.

Her mother dries her with a towel, gets her dressed then takes her to the living room. Louis' sitting on the couch watching Power Rangers.

Lacey joins him. They lay on the couch, side by side, covered up by a Looney Toons blanket. She snuggles into Louis for warmth noticing he's asleep. Her eye lids feel heavier, and heavier as she drifts off to sleep.
