Summer Bummer
“Are you kidding? Summer school?” I said exasperated. All I have been doing since the boy’s graduation is anticipating summer and now I'm stuck at school. This has to be a joke.
“It won’t be that bad. You’re friends with Zayn right? He’ll be there.” I didn’t feel like delving into the complications that is me and Zayn's friendship so I just nodded my head. “Good well other than that have a good summer.” She smiled and turned towards the computer signaling it was my cue to leave.
LINEBREAK
I walked towards the ugly blue doors of my school and scowled. I shouldn’t have to be here until September. But no I'm stuck here from 5-7 every week night for the next two weeks. I guess it could be worse, I could’ve signed up later and be stuck in the 8-3 program that ran 3 weeks. As I sat down in the lobby waiting to be told where to go Zayn strolled in bobbing his head to the music he was listening to.
“Hey.” I said with a wave. He nodded and sat next to me pushing a headphone off his ear. “Whatcha listening to?” I asked
“Monster by Skillet. Wanna listen?” I nodded. He pulled his Beats off his head and put them over my ears. He restarted the song. At first I was about to ask what the hell was it but I couldn’t stop listening. It was so enticing and scary at the same time. By the second chorus I was bobbing my head along too and getting really into the song. Zayn was smiling. I couldn’t tell what kind of smile it was but any smile is good. When it ended I immediately took my phone out.
“What are you doing?”
“Buying that song!!” he smiled again and I asked “what?”
“Nothing I'm just amused. I thought you would hate it.”
“At first I kinda did then I just got hooked.” I eagerly click purchase on the song.
“Jazz?” a woman called my name.
“Yes. Bye Zayn.” I got up from my chair and headed towards the woman.
“Hello I’m Mary I run the summer school program here. So you’re here for math?” I nodded. She handed me a little book that said Algebra 1 on it. I was about to correct her and say I failed Algebra 2 but then I thought better of it.
“Start with the first section and see how far you go. You’re the only math student at the moment so you’ll be in the room with the World History people.” She said walking around the table and heading towards the doors. I followed her silently. She rounded the corner and walked into one of the science labs. “George, she’ll being doing her math work in here is that alright.” He nodded and she told me to find a seat. I found Zayn and sat next to him. He smiled and looked up and the teacher who had already begun to ramble on. I opened my book and expected the worst. I was surprised when I saw I could easily complete the equations without a problem. After a while Zayn slid me a note.
What are you all smiley about? I wrote back. I actually know how to do most of this :D. He smiled at the paper and I put in my head phones and continued on with my work.

School was out and harry was waiting outside the school with a bag of fries from my favorite place. I smiled and waved bye to Zayn. He smiled and nodded to Harry who nodded back. I shook my head and walked up to Harry and hugged him.
“Those for me.” He hesitated and then smiled and said “Yup how was your first day?” he asked as we got into the car.
“Okay what’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?” he attempted a smile but I could see how fake it was. “You seem off… distraught if you will.”
“Jazz I'm fine. Now eat your fries and tell me all about the hell that is summer school.”
“It wasn’t actually that bad. I understood the equations and everything I felt so good after I finished. And I got to sit with Zayn so I had someone to hang out with.” Harry’s knuckles tightened on the wheel and his jaw clenched. I was going to ask what was wrong but I could tell he didn’t want to talk about it. I picked up m back of fries and started to balance a fry like a mustache and waited to see how long it took him to notice. We hit a stop light and he looked over and burst out laughing. I finally dropped the fry and sighed. “How long were you holding that up?” “A minute or so but it felt longer oww.” I opened and closed my mouth a few times before popping another fry into my mouth. I reached over and plugged my phone into the cable and clicked monster. I started head banging and getting really into it when Harry paused it. I looked up in confusion and he simply stated “I have a head ache.” And we drove the rest of the way home in silence.
