You Couldn't Understand
That's Her?
Jamie's POV
I keep a firm hold of Harry's hand as I lead him up the walkway to the front door of the cute little house. It's only seconds after I knock when the door is lung open, and I'm greeted with the grinning face of a woman.
"Jamie!" she pulls me into a tight embrace, "Todd, she's here!"
I see Todd walk up the hallway and his handsome face instantly spreads into a grin.
"There she is!" he ruffles my hair, "And she has a friend?"
"Oh, I'm sorry," I say, "Lacey, Todd, this is my friend Harry."
They exchange handshakes and nice-to-meet-you's and the couple motions for us to come inside. After a quick exchange between them, Lacey turns to go into the kitchen while Todd leads us into the living room.
"Can I get you anything?" he asks.
"No, thank you," Harry and I reply simultaneously.
"So, Harry, how do you know Jamie?" Todd sits back while he asks this. He looks like a father interrogating his daughter's boyfriend.
"We go to school together. But I'm a Senior. We've got the same lunch period, and I guess our paths just crossed," Harry says in a serious tone.
"Lovely accent," Lacey's voice comes through the baby monitor sitting on the coffee table, "Where are you from?"
"It's called Chesire? England. I moved here in middle school," Harry replies while eyeing the baby monitor with curiosity. Slowly, he starts to look around the room and notice the toys, baby-gate, and lack of sharp corners. Just as the understanding crosses his face, Lacey walks into the room with my daughter in her arms.
"Hi, Charlotte," I coo at the little girl. She just gurgles and giggles in response.
Harry glances over at me, and whispers, "Is that... That's her?"
I just nod in response as Lacey sets Charlotte down on the ground and she instantly crawls over to play with my shoe lace. I scoop her up into my arms and place her on my lap.
"J...J," she says with concentration. Jamie is too complex for her, so I'm cousin JJ.
"That's right, baby girl. JJ came to visit and brought a friend," I turn her towards Harry, "Can you say Hazza?"
"Hazzzz," she says and breaks into a fit of giggles.
"Well, Jamie, we're going to head out. Call us if you need anything, we'll be back in a couple of hours. The numbers for basically everything are on the kitchen counter," Lacey says to me before leaning down to look at Charlotte, "We'll be back in a little while, Char. You be good for Cousin JJ and Harry, okay?"
"Hazzzz," the baby replies.
"I'll take that as a yes," she says before kissing her daughter and following her husband out the door.
After they're gone, I sit down on the ground with the beautiful little girl and let her pull all of her toys out of her basket and throw them around in a very toddler-esque fashion. After a few games of me chasing her as she crawls around the couch and about three tickle monster attacks, I look up at Harry. He's watching us with a look of awe.
I lean down and whisper in Charlotte's ear, "Go get Haz, Char. He wants to play."
The little girl obeys and crawls over to Harry's feet, where she pulls herself up to stand with the support of his knees.
"Hazzzz. Play," she instructs him.
He looks over at me with a grin, "She's like a miniature you."
"She's blonde," I argue.
"But the eyes... That's all you. The eyes and the little button nose. Plus she just instructed me to play instead of asking. Absolutely you."
"Play!" she commands him, reinforcing her point with a solid thump to his leg and a scowl on her face.
"Oh, God. The scowl!" he yells before scooping her up and standing, "Charlotte, would you like to play a game?"
"Game! Game!" she replies.
"Okay, hold on tight," he instructs. After she wraps her tiny little arms around his neck, he holds her tight and spins in fast little circles. This sends her into a fit of giggles.
"Again! Game!" she yells, and he obeys.
They spin for about ten minutes before Harry has to sit down. Luckily, all the laughing and yelling has somewhat tired her out and she just crawls into my lap and rests her head on my shoulder.
"She's a lovely baby, Jamie," Harry says to me as I stroke her tiny head.
"I like to visit. I wanna be a part of her life, you know? And Lacey and Todd totally support it, too. They're great."
"You made this tiny human," he mumbles, more to himself than to me.
"Scary, isn't it?" I reply.
