You Couldn't Understand
Get in the Car
Shocker. Nathan's going at it with some blonde in the corner. Looks like I'm finding my own ride home. Again. I pull out my phone and dial Ashton's number. She answers on the third ring.
"James? He at it again?"
"Of course. Can you come pick me up? I would take Nate's car but..."
"But you've probably taken every shot handed to you. Gosh, I will never understand your ability to sound so sober when you're so not." I can feel her motherly scowl trough my phone.
"Ashhh... He could be hoursss.. Pwease?" I whine.
"Sorry, babe. Delia's in the shop. I backed over my cat yesterday then ran into my mom's car."
"Fine. Just know I hate you, bitch."
"Love you, too. Now, I'm a normal person and going to bed."
"Ash, you're a Junior in high school. going to bed at one on a Saturday is not normal."
"Whatever, still gonna do it. Bye, boo."
"Night, Pumpkin."
By this time, Nathan has disappeared from his corner. Whore. Looks like I'm calling a cab. I fight my way through the packed hallway and manage to get out the front door and down the steps. Fantastic. My wallet isn't in my purse. Fuck. I guess I'm walking.
I stumble down the street for a few minutes before hearing a car pull up beside me. I respond to this by gracefully falling flat on my face, sending both of my heels flying.
"Dammit." I crawl around searching for my shoes, but only find the right one.
"That you, blue eyes?" I hear the unmistakable accent.
"I have a name." I grumble.
"That's you, alright. You need a ride?" He's peering out the passenger window, and there's a blonde kid, sound asleep, in the backseat.
"No. I like walking, and I hate people."
"I've seen you, you know. You and your two friends. The guy talks to girls, but you and the other girl just talk to each other. Never the rest of us. Makes you kind of intriguing." He grins.
"Well it's kind of hard to talk to the 'rest of you' when you're us," I say before thinking, "We actually have souls and *gasp!* issues with our lives!"
"I get that."
"Oh, yeah right. Like a guy like you could ever get what it's like." I practically spat at him.
"You'd be amazed what a guy like me does and doesn't get, love. You don't know the half of it." Even in the darkness I could feel his gaze.
"Just leave me alone, okay? Go find some other victim. I'll find my way." Even as I said it, I knew it was a lie. How the hell was I supposed to get home in the middle of the night with one shoe and no car?
"Get in the car, Jamie." He was almost pleading at this point.
"Ugh. Fine. Just know that I'm not happy about it."
"Yeah, yeah. Angst and all that jazz. I understand."
"No, you don't." I whispered so softly, I doubted he could even hear it, "You couldn't understand."
Notes
I enjoy writing, but it's kind of pointless if it goes unread. So please let me know what you think!(:
