You Couldn't Understand
It Must be True Then
Harry's POV
As I walk into the cafeteria, I see all my friends sitting at our usual table. So, I make my way over and sit next to Niall. I seem to have entered a conversation about whores.
"All I'm saying," Jake states, "is that having sex doesn't make you a whore."
"It does so. Unless you're in a relationship, you're a desperate little whore just looking for attention."
"Harry?" Jake asks, "Sex equals whoredom. Yes or no?" As usual I'm the decider, but before I can answer, Alexis speaks up.
"Oh, Haz knows all about whores. What's the new one's name? Janet?" Alexis sneers from across the table.
Surprisingly, it's Niall who responds, "Jamie. And she's not a whore."
"Sure she is. Why else would Harry go for her?"
In that moment, all I want is to knock that look off her face, "Because she's nothing like you."
The table falls into silence, and I can practically feel the rage radiating from Al. No one, even me, ever crosses her. Jamie calling her a bitch was the first time I'd ever seen anyone stand up to her. I shrug off the silence and reach for one of Niall's cookies, knowing this will break the silence.
"No!" he gasps as he snatches the cookie back, "I only have three!"
Everyone laughs at Niall's defense of his food and the table works its way back up to conversation. But even though everyone else is laughing and has forgotten my comment, I can still feel Alexis's glare. Abruptly, she stands up from her seat and starts to make her way across the cafeteria. When I realize where she's going I leap out of my seat and start to speed-walk after her, and I feel Niall directly after me.
Jamie's POV
"Hey... What's Bitch Barbie doing?" Nate interrupts Ashton's story about running over her cat.
I look up to see the She-Devil storming towards us from the "cool kids" table. What the hell did I do now? I watch Harry and Niall get up and chase after her, and most of the heads in the cafeteria turn as the three most popular kids in school make their way over to the three most irrelevant.
She reaches our table and glares down at me, "Why don't you tell him, whoreface? Tell him what you did."
"Al, get back to the table before you do something you'll regret," Niall tries to pull her back but she's clearly pissed and pulls out of his grasp.
"She's not a whore?! Oh, you just don't know what I know. Tell him, slut. Tell Harry about why you were out of school for most of freshman year," she's red in the face and it's clear she's not bluffing. I can't speak though. My brain isn't moving.
"Do you get joy from other's misery or are you just that much of a jealous bitch?" Ashton innocently questions.
This shocks everyone, including me and Nathan. Ashton doesn't do confrontation. The cafeteria is so quiet that everyone hears this comment though, which is probably the first time most of these people have heard her say anything. Some people gasp, some burst into laughter. I just watch Alexis's face. Her eyes cloud over with rage.
"I have nothing to be jealous of, little Ashley. Your tramp of a friend will be done with soon enough," she turns back to me, "Tell him Jamie. Or I can."
Harry speaks for the first time since they came over here, "Alexis. Stop it now."
He tries to grab her wrist but she yanks away and screams, "Silly little Harold, you don't even know," she spins back towards me, "Your little friend is the ultimate whore. She missed most of freshman year because she was busy having a baby. Tell him, Jamie. Tell him how you had a home tutor while you were pregnant. Tell him how you gave birth to a baby girl and then gave her up for adoption. Tell him you're a little whore. And a dumb one at that."
The silence in the cafeteria manages to become even more silent. But this silence is broken when Ashton slaps Alexis straight across the face.
"You BITCH. Fuck you! You honestly cannot stand that Harry could like someone who's actually a decent person. Go to hell you evil, horrible-"
"Alexis, is it?" Nathan cuts Ash off, "I believe what Ashton is meaning to say is that even though Jamie may have had a secret that you so kindly just shared, you're still the whore who needed sex to make Harry like you at all. So go to hell, maybe they'll like you more there than anyone here ever will."
Nathan says this in a more serious tone than I've ever heard him use, but I'm still sitting here in stunned silence. Alexis seems amazed that two peasants would dare insult her. But all I can really focus on is the look on Harry's face. I can't tell if it's regret, disgust, or just... shock.
As Alexis tries to insult Nathan back, Niall speaks, "Jamie? Is she... Is that-" but he doesn't finish his question before I'm out of my seat and out of the cafeteria.
I hear Nate and Ash follow me out but I don't stop to acknowledge them. I just run and run until I'm outside in my car. I feel the hot tears pour down my face as I bang my hand against my head and try to understand. I don't know how she could have found out, but now the entire school knows. I'm so dumb for thinking I could be happy. For thinking I could end up with Harry.
I pull out my blade and find relief in the pain.
Harry's POV
I watch Jamie run out of the cafeteria, and her two friends shoot me glares before they run after her. I've never even heard the girl talk and the guy doesn't seem like he could ever be serious, but they meant business when Alexis said that about Jamie.
It must be true, then? She has a baby somewhere out there... She had sex, and had a baby. She's a mother.
My thoughts are interrupted when I hear Niall speak again, "What the fuck did you do that for?" he booms at Alexis, his accent becoming thicker.
"Just thought Haz needed to know the truth," she states. She's ten times calmer with them out of the room, but a bit of fear creeps back into her eyes when Niall says this.
"Dammit, Al. We all try to pretend like you aren't this hypocritical, jealous bitch. But how are we supposed to defend something like that?"
"You think I'm the one that needs to be defended?! Did you not hear what she did?" she screeches.
"Yeah, I heard. It's also none of anyone's goddamn business!" he turns towards the captive audience that is the student body, "No one! All of you sit there like you don't have secrets. Fuck Alexis, I can't even look at you."
He storms out of the cafeteria and I'm left with Alexis and the still-silent cafeteria. I'm surprised that Niall said any of that. He's usually so happy and carefree and he definitely doesn't get that angry. I don't understand why Niall's always the one defending Jamie. Shouldn't I do that? I turn to look at Alexis.
"Hazza? Still think she's worth it?" she smirks at me.
"You just proved my point, Alexis."
"What? What point?" her face changes to one of confusion.
"I do not want a girl that is anything like you," and with that, I spin on my heels and follow the four people who left before me.
