Hunted
Alleyway
I kept running. Finally I reached a crowded street. Well, not exactly crowded. A few people walked around, sat on benches, but not many. But still crowded enough to save me. I leaned against a building. The smoky air was freezing cold and I wondered how I would survive a night here. I reflected on my sister's last screams... Surely she was dead by now. I thought about how my parents had died, their faces stained with blood. About how he left without the police noticing. How he left without killing me and my sister.
I had to find a new alleyway. Alleyways always scares me, especially after my sister was captured. I walked down the street, hugging what money I had close to my chest.
I slipped inside a small alley and hid inside an old cardboard box. The box was quite large, like one of those boxes that your new patio set arrives in. I laid out my belongings.
Here's what I had:
$10.50
A small knife
A pen
A pencil
A leather-bound journal
A tiny safe
A small first-aid kit
A granola bar
A diamond locket
A small glass jar
Clothes
That's it. I twisted my locket around my neck and unlocked my safe. It was empty. I put in my money, first-aid kit, pen and pencil, glass jar, and journal. I put my knife inside my large coat pocket. I had worn leather leggings, leather boots, two changes of underwear, a tank-top, my father's leather coat, a baseball cap, and a t-shirt. I had panhandled over the years, earning money. I decided to panhandle a bit more tomorrow, before I left. I nibbled at my granola bar to settle my growling stomach and closed the box, poking small air-holes in the sides with my knife. I curled my jacket around me and drifted into a dreamless sleep.
