Meeting the Enemy
"Clark! Smith! June!" Joshua yells.
Stop with the last names. Nobody else is named Lea here, call me Lea. (Except Lia Walker but she moved to a different headquarters.)
Alex and I race to Joshua and what's-her-name rolls her eyes.
"Immature." Says Anna and does this ridiculous walk to Joshua, Alexander and I.
"Go with the boys and show them around."
"Now we have to be treated like employees?" I ask crossly.
"Show them!" Joshua, or Mr. Lightway at the moment, pushes us down and ignores my comment.
" 'Ight guys, so this is how it's goin' down."
"Let me." Alex eyes me. I wasn't trying to do that on purpose. But desperate calls call for desperate measures.
Some of them have cracked smiles.
"Some" mean 3.
Alex quickly says, "Alright, so we have 3 floors. The top floor is the attic, and we have about 10 flats on each floor. "
He's smooth with this talking stuff. Anna tries to act all grown-up and important, but she says, "WE like going upstairs and your rooms are.. uhh.. have room... and there are some stuff and yeah.."
She's so sophisticated..
Wait. Typo. She'll Be*... maybe.
I brush some hair behind my ear until I realize we're going somewhere, downstairs to the second floor. I tag along until an accent rings in my ear.
"Hey."
"Hi.." I reply shyly.
"I'm Louis." The boy grins.
"So-" I start, but Anna cuts in. "Hi Lou. Vas Happenin? I'm a big fan. You're my favorite. I love your stripes. I sent you some carrots and a card and a shirt with "I Luv Ya" written on it. I made it. Do you like it?" She said quickly.
"Uh.. yeah. Hi..." He says slowly.
"Listen, I think you should be at the front, helping..?"
"Oh yeah, I will. I'm really helpful. Once I stopped a car for an old lady. She took a really long time so I let the car go over her left foot. But it wasn't my fault. Once, I fed a cat some bread. But then I took it back because I didn't want him to choke. It turned out that there was some tuna on the bread, but I-"
"That's fantastic. Bye."
"Baai!"
I roll my eyes. "How do you deal with that?" He grins.
"Well, it takes practice.. and ignorance." I smile back.
"Well, I'll practice." He jokes.
I grin. I have a feeling I might like this guy-

Clark, calm the fuck down... no boyfriends, no 'close' friends... Alex doesn't count.. But I have a warm feeling in my chest. I seize it and drop it down into my stomach, replacing the happy feeling with anger.
"Yeah, nice talking, but I have to help." I say, checking my phone, pretending to get a text.
"Alright. See you, I guess, yeah?"
"Yup. Bye!"
I zip in the middle between Alex.
I will never allow myself to have a boyfriend. It's forbidden. I can't love. I protect. If I get a boyfriend, it will lead to enemies and police and the headquarters being shut down..
I make myself swear on my family's lives not to ever fall in love. Because I can never. ever, ever, fall in love.
