Do The Stars Shine Out For You?

Chapter Eleven

“I’m going to be waiting here forever,” I whined, stretching out on the couch just outside the boys’ conference room.

“Stop exaggerating,” Carah said, patting me on top of my head before disappearing into the room.

“Yeah yeah yeah,” I muttered, scrolling through my Twitter feed absently. I hadn’t experienced a spike in followers, or anything, mostly because I refused to let Harry or any of the boys mention me in their tweets. The tabloids were still speculating about me, I was a mystery girl with no history to them all. I didn’t live in London; I have no records here or anything other than Carah tying me to this place.

It would only be a matter of time before they figured it out.

“It’ll only be an hour, love, and then we’ll go out and do something fun,” Harry reassured, kissing me on the temple. I nodded in response.

“Don’t suffer too much without my presence, Carly.” Louis smirked at me, and then the rest of the boys shuffled into the conference room, Zayn mumbling something about Simon being cranky and Niall complaining that he hadn’t eaten in nearly an hour. Oh the horror.

I was left by myself in the large hallway, and did what I do best. I went to sleep.

--

Some time later, I felt someone tugging at bits of my hair, pulling me out of my rest. I was pretty comfortable here, and decided I wasn’t going to be moving any time soon.

The tugging continued.

“Stop, Harry,” I mumbled, batting away the hand and turning over.

“Oi! Harry? I’m offended. Don’t compare me to that curly-haired mop.” Louis’ dramatic voice filtered through my ears, and I giggled.

“She’s always sleeping,” Liam commented, receiving a few noises of agreement from the others. I lifted an elbow and peeked out beneath it. The lot of them were watching, far too amused for my liking.

“It’s not my fault I can’t sleep at night,” I groaned, still not making any move to get up and have a shot at being a functioning human.

“Yeah,” Louis responded cheekily, “it’s Harry’s. Give her a break, yeah?”

My face burned about seven shades of red. I heard a slap, and assumed Harry hit him for that comment. I would’ve if I could be bothered to do anything.

Harry and I hadn’t gotten that far. It was only a month into the relationship, and I didn’t want to make the mistake of rushing into things before we were ready.

It doesn’t mean we hadn’t gotten close, though.

“C’mon, Car. We’re going out for lunch, and it’s actually nice out today.”

“I just want to sleeeeep.” I latched onto the couch armrest, digging my fingernails into the fabric.

Harry lowered his head and whispered in my ear. “Not today, love.”

“Make me, then,” I shot back, my voice slightly muffled by the pillow.

Silence.

“You’re going to regret that, Carly,” Zayn said warningly, talking to a threat I couldn’t see.

“I’m going to guess about five minutes,” Niall said in an announcer’s voice, and I didn’t dare look up. Carah sounded as if she were going into convulsions, attempting to hold back laughter, but instead letting it squeak out and sounding like a dying animal instead.

“No, he has to take the lift. At least ten,” Liam reasoned, to my surprise. Were they betting on me? For what?

“He’s not going to take the lift. She’ll manage a way to get out, then. He’ll take the stairs, probably. I guess three, tops.” Louis added, his voice contorted the same way Carah’s was. My heart sped up in my chest.

“Harry…” I said warningly, moving my head to look at him.

But before I could even blink, his arms wrapped around my waist, shifting so that one hooked in the crooks of my knees and the other sliding up my back.

“Got the timer?”

Louis nodded, holding out his phone. I was still confused, to say the least.

“Ready… set…. GO!” Harry took off, me bouncing around in his arms, and I buried my face into his chest. He avoided the elevator just like Louis predicted, and took a stairwell down four flights of stairs.

“Goddamn it, Harold Edward Styles, put me down!” I complained as he took another flight of steps. My brain was rattling around in my skull, and my arms were wrapped around Harry for dear life. I did not want my obituary to read “killed walking down stairs.”

“You said you wanted me to make you, Car, so I am.” He glanced down at me and smirked, not even winded.

We burst through the last door and into the lobby, causing quite a commotion but no one seemed to think it was out of the ordinary. The receptionist even looked up and rolled her eyes before returning to her work. Rude.

Harry hesitated for a second, a fleeting moment when he saw all the girls gathered outside the building, holding signs and screaming their declarations of love, and then turned for the back exit.

“Jesus Christ, where are you taking me?”

His gigantic monster car was parked behind the building, and I was not so gently tossed into the passenger seat, and the second Harry slid into the driver’s seat, he was on his phone, speaking to Louis.

“And?” He asked expectantly, raising an eyebrow and breathing slightly heavily. A muffled voice sounded on the other side of the line, and Harry let out a victory whoop. “Four and a half minutes! New record!”

I raised an eyebrow. “Oh? And do you do this with all of the girls who fall asleep on the couch outside your conference room?”

He grinned, a smile so wide it could have split his face in half. Despite my best to seem like I was angry with him, I smiled back.

“Only you, love. Lou and El had the best record, but we’ve got them beat.” He ducked in for a kiss, but at the last minute I turned my head and he only got my cheek. “Oh c’mon, please, Car?”

“Nope. I have a headache now because of all those stairs. I was perfectly fine sleeping, thank you very much.” Harry turned his eyes on me, big and green and shining, pouting a little and still leaning in very close. “Nope. You can’t guilt me with those puppy dog eyes, Styles. Not today.”

Harry frowned and tried another tactic. He pulled me close and pressed his lips to the sensitive spot on my neck. I nearly fell into him, the rush of pleasure was so sudden.

“Stop it, that’s not fair,” I said breathlessly as he kissed his way up to my ear, across my jaw and finally, teasingly, to my lips.

“All’s fair in love and war,” he whispered against my lips, before I felt his tongue brushing lightly against mine.

---

Harry and the other boys dropped me and Carah off at our flat, shouting obnoxious good-bye’s before they drove off for their recording session.

Carah and I gabbed out what we were going to do tonight, which was probably stay in and order something unhealthy and just have a little girl time, when I reached the front door to the flat and my blood ran cold.

“No,” I said, backing away until my back hit the wall, acting like I’d seen a snake.

“What is it, Lin?” Carah asked, confused, until I pointed to the door. Her face paled, drained completely of all color.

On the door was a picture of me and Harry leaving the conference room hand in hand; nailed to the soft wood like the person needed to do it in a hurry. Or they were angry. Two dripping red X’s were drawn over our faces, the ink sliding down the glossy picture and saturating the carpet below.

A sob choked its way up my throat, leaving my mouth in a strangled sort of noise, as my eyes fell on a slip of white paper taped just below it.

There was a blood-red ‘O’, and it was definitely not drawn in ink.

“Call the police, Carah,” I said, feeling far away. I was light-headed and my heart was pounding erratically in my chest. That’s impossible. Owen is in America. I am in England. There is no possible way he’s here. Or that he knows where I live. It’s impossible.

I heard screaming, loud and high-pitched, before I realized that it was coming from me. Carah had tears running down her face as she spoke frantically to a 999 operator. Black clouds were floating in front of my eyes.

Eventually, everything faded away.
