The Happiest Place On Earth

The sound of laughter and excited chatter echoed throughout every hallway in the arena that One Direction would be headlining that same night. In one room was a group of friends who were having the time of their life and enjoying each others company. In a room across the hall was a boy, sitting with his head in his hands as he anticipated the drama that was going to come within the next 24 hours.

Unaware of this boys anxiousness, the group of friends continued to laugh and mess with each other when suddenly one of them silenced the rest of the group.

“We’ve been working on some new music for our next album and I really want you to hear one of the songs. So, Niall?”

Immediately the rest of the members of the band new exactly which song Harry was talking about and with a quick nod from each of them Niall started strumming the guitar he had just grabbed.

As each boy sang their part they all looked Kaylani directly in the eyes meanwhile Harry kneeled in front of her and held her hand as he sang to her. Liam, Louis, Zayn, Niall, and Harry all meant every single word they sang and they knew that Kaylani needed to hear it, especially after the events that took place within the last couple of days.

I wish that I could take you to the start

“This is just one of the many songs we’ve worked on that pertain to you.” Harry was still on his knees in front of Kaylani as he spoke. He could see the unshed tears in her eyes but he knew they were happy tears due to the smile on her face and the looks of admiration, awe, and bafflement hidden within her chocolate brown eyes.

“I don’t even know how to express what I’m feeling. but thank you. All of you. My life definitely wouldn’t be the same without any of you and I thank God every day for putting you all in my life. I used to think that meeting you all was just a trick of luck, but I can see now that it wasn’t; it was fate.”

As Harry stood he took both of Kaylani’s hands in his own before pulling her up from the position she was sitting in on the couch. His arms wrapped around her slim torso as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. Everyone else in the room following in his footsteps and doing the same.

“Wait a minute, where’s Jake?” It was just now that the group of friends realized one of them was absent from the room. The entire time they thought he had been in the room with them when in reality he was in the room across the hallway thinking about how he could break the news to his best friend that her ex-boyfriend would be arriving in just a few short hours.

“Jake!” Alanis screamed her best friend’s name just outside of the door when she noticed the door across the hall was open and he was sitting on the couch in the middle of the room. “He’s in here!”

As Jake listened to the sound of footsteps approaching he realized it was now or never. He removed his hands from his face before giving Alanis a pleading look which she automatically understood - he was going to tell Harry and Kaylani the truth. As much as Alanis disagreed with the idea of Ryan coming there she knew it was something that needed to be done sooner rather than later.

By the time everyone else walked into the room, Jake had his head in his hands once again. He listened to the sound of Alanis telling everyone to give him, Harry and Kaylani some privacy before the click of the door echoed in his ears signaling that the door had been shut.

“Jake, is everything okay?” Kaylani walked slowly to where Jake sat on the cream colored couch before taking a seat next to him so that her hand could rest on his knee. She of all people knew that things rarely upset Jake so whatever it was that was bothering him had to be something big.

“I have something to tell you two that I really don’t want to tell you because I know you’re going to hate me for it, but it was necessary. I couldn’t bear to see the two of you fighting and I knew only one thing would be able to finally put all of this behind us.” Jake brought his hands down from his face as he looked at the couple with nothing but sorrow, anguish, and a tiny hint of hope.

“What did you do, Jake?” Harry didn’t want to get angry at the boy, but he had a feeling he knew what was going to happen and if he was right then the next few days were going to be rather difficult.

A loud sigh escaped Jake’s red lips from his constant chewing on them. As he prepared to tell Harry and Kaylani exactly what was going to happen, he knew that it would mean everything would change. They would most likely ignore him, but he was doing it for them so as long as it meant they would be happier in the end then he would deal with the consequences. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make.

“Ryan is on his way here.”

The words were barely above a whisper but it seemed as though he had screamed them off the top of his lungs. As soon as the words were out in the open they lingered in the air and created tension. Jake didn’t want to hold onto them anymore but Kaylani and Harry didn’t want them either.

Just as Jake suspected, Kaylani shot up from the couch and moved to the other side of the room meanwhile Harry sucked in a deep breath. He placed his head in his hands once again as he listened to the sound of Kaylani pacing while Harry tried to calm her down. He should be angry too, but he was more focused on making sure Kaylani didn’t kill her best friend.

“I can’t believe you would even do something like this Jake. You helped get me on this tour two weeks early specifically so I could get away from him, and yet you invite him here after he almost made Harry and me break up! I know he’s your brother, but why?! Why would you do this to me Jake?” The anger in Kaylani’s voice had disappeared by the end of her rant and all that was left was the sound of her desperation as she started to choke on her tears. She loved Jake, but for him to go behind her back and do something like this was one of the worst betrayals she’s ever encountered.

Jake couldn’t bear to look Kaylani in the eyes as he spoke, “I’m sorry, but it needed to be done. Everyone here could see this was eating the two of you up inside and the only option was to get you three to talk.” Jake had decided he wouldn’t go down without a fight and if that’s what Kaylani wanted then it was what she would get. He needed the two of them to understand why he was doing this, whether they liked it or not it was necessary. “I will not stand by as my brother breaks your heart again. I almost lost you once, I refuse to let it get that far ever again. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think it was what was best for you! For both of you! You can’t run away from your problems Kay, you have to face them. The three of you need to sit down and figure this shit out before someone else gets hurt. I almost lost you AND my brother, I won’t just sit by and watch!”

Kaylani couldn’t believe the words coming out of Jake’s mouth. She had done absolutely nothing wrong, Ryan did everything and yet he was defending him. “Ryan is the person to blame for all of this or are you forgetting he pretended to be dead for six months?! Six months, Jake!”

“I know exactly what he did Kaylani, I don’t need to be reminded. He’s my brother and you’re my best friend and nothing will change that, but I need to do something about this entire situation. You and Harry can hate me for it, but in the end if it means that you two are finally able to be together without Ryan trying to tear you apart and I’m able to keep my brother and my best friend alive and somewhat happy, then that’s all I’m asking for.” Jake had given up on yelling. He knew it wouldn’t do any good, but the desperation in his voice wasn’t helping either.

“I understand why you did this Jake, but I agree with Kay. It was wrong for you to go behind our backs and do this. I can tell Kaylani wants to kill you and I’m pretty pissed off too, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship. Maybe when this is all over we’ll be able to forgive you, but for right now you should just go.” Harry wrapped Kaylani up in his arms as soon as he heard her choke on a sob and start to cry. She was already going through enough and once things were finally looking up something else had to happen. It was like she said, it really is one step forward, two steps back.

Jake stood up from his seat on the couch and wiped his sweaty hands on his jeans. He could see exactly how hurt Harry and Kaylani were just from the way they were standing.

Harry was cradling Kaylani in his arms with his head on top of hers as she sobbed onto his crisp blue shirt. He stood with his eyes closed and his lips tucked into his mouth as he listened to the sound of the love of his life crying in his arms - a sound that made his heart break. That was the worst part of this entire situation, hearing Kaylani cry and knowing that there isn’t much he can do to help her but hold her and let her know he’s there for her.

The couple acted as if Jake was no longer in the room as he stood off to the side and watched his favorite couple with tears in his eyes. He didn’t want to bother them but he knew he needed to at least let Kaylani know one thing before he walked away for who knows how long. “I’m sorry for hurting you, but just know that you’ll always be my best friend and I love you. I hope you can forgive me for this.”

With a final glance in their direction, Jake put one foot in front of the other before walking away from his best friend. The sound of her cries echoed in his mind as he walked down the hall and towards the vacant bus. It was going to be downhill from here for a while but hopefully things would start to look up soon. If not, he knew he would lose his best friend forever and that was one thing he was determined to never let happen.
