Chapter Nine
I paced the living room as I waited for Melody to arrive. I still hadn’t figured out a way to convince her she was better than Mitchell. As soon as my doorbell rang, I practically ran for the front door. After regaining my composure, I opened the door and smiled the instant I saw her curly red hair.
Melody’s POV
Liam’s smile spread across his face, causing me to smile in return. “Well hello there, gorgeous.”
“Hey.” I stood on my tip toes and wrapped my arms around him, pulling him in for a hug. His arms instantly wrapped around my waist. “So what did you have in mind?” I asked as I parted from him, letting myself into his apartment.
“Maybe just a movie and I could order a pizza. Just, you know… hang out.”
“Sounds like a plan.” I smiled as Liam took my hand in his and walked me to his living room. “What movie?”

After we finished watching Grease one and two, Liam finally decided on ordering two pepperoni pizzas (“I’m a hungry, growing young man. I could probably eat a whole one. Might as well get two so I know you’ll get some.”) and a liter of Pepsi.
When the pizza and soda arrived, we sat on the couch and I instantly draped my legs across his lap. “So have you gotten the chance to listen to any of our music yet?”
“A bit… not really my style, to be honest.”
“Wh… what?”
“Your ‘Up All Night’ album is to… bubble gum pop for me. I do enjoy ‘Take Me Home’. I like that one song… uhm… ‘Over Again’? That one’s lovely.”
“So like our music… just not all of it.” I shrugged.
“Pretty much, yeah.”
“Well, good. I can’t be liking a girl who hates the music I make for a living.” Oh. This is the first time he’s come out and said he’s liked me. What do I say back? “Now would be the time to say something back… tell me you like me too… let me down easy…” I took a deep breath and moved my legs off of his lap and set my feet on the ground.
“Liam… please don’t make me do this.”
“Mels, please. Just tell me.”
“Liam, stop.”
“Please, Melody.”
“Liam—“
“Mels, please!” I flinched at the raise of volume in his voice. “Sorry… I—I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s okay.” I sighed and looked up at him. “Yes… okay? I do like you, but I can’t do anything about it.”
“Because you have a boyfriend?”
“Something like that.” I rubbed my palms on my jeans to dry them off. Sweaty palms were not cute.
“Well, don’t you think you’d be saving him some heartbreak by, you know… not being here?” Liam looked at me with his puppy dog eyes.
“He doesn’t know that I’m here.” I looked down at the floor, crossing my arms over my torso.
“So you’re here and he doesn’t know?” I nodded as Liam’s index finger hooked under my chin and turned my face to his. “So you… like me, and I like you.” Liam placed his hand on my shoulder. “What are we going to do about it?”
“I… I don’t…” My sentence was cut short as Liam’s lips met mine. I quickly pulled away.
“Sorry… I just… sorry.”
“No, don’t be.” I smiled and rested my hand on his cheek. “You just caught me off guard.” I shrugged and brought my lips back up to his. Liam’s hand rested on my lower back and pulled me in closer as our lips moved in sync.
Just then, I realized what I was doing and pushed Liam away. “Sorry, I just… I can’t.” I apologized and stood up off the couch, grabbing my purse.
“Wait! Melody!” I tried to walk out the front door, but Liam grabbed my arm and turned me to face him. “You don’t have to leave. We can forget it happened, just please don’t leave.”
“Liam, just let me go.”
Liam’s POV
“I’m not letting you go. Please, let’s just forget it happened.”
“No, Liam.” Melody jerked her arm out of my grip. “Listen I have to go. My boyfriend will be wanting me back soon. I have to go.” Melody walked off, but I grabbed her jacked, accidentally pulling it off, revealing her arms.
“Melody…” I looked at the bruises lining her arms. “What happened?”
“They’re nothing.” She said and grabbed her jacket back, throwing it back on.
“Don’t lie to me, Mels.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Melody, what are they?”
“Don’t worry about it, Liam.”
“I know about Mitchell.” I saw all the color drain from her face the second the words left my mouth. “Look, it was just a wild guess before, but I know. And I know you won’t listen to me but you have no idea how much you’re worth—“
“Liam stop it.”
“I would never lay a finger on you, and you know that.”
“Liam.”
“Please, just listen to me.”
“No! Liam just let it go!” Melody adjusted her purse on her shoulder and walked out of my apartment. As soon as the door shut behind her, I kicked the wall. I did it again! Dammit!
Melody’s POV
I got back to mine and Quin’s dorm room and slammed the door shut behind me. I couldn’t believe I kissed him! God I was so stupid. I had a boyfriend! How could I do that to—
“Mels.” I looked up at the sound of Mitchell’s voice from across the room.
“Mitch!” My heart began to race. “I thought you were with your mom today.”
“We finished everything we needed to.”
“That’s good.” I smiled and put my purse down on my bed. “How was your day?”
“Great until I found out my girlfriend was at another guy’s house.” My heart stopped beating for at least three seconds at that point.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, acting completely innocent.
“I know what you were doing today, Melody.” My breath caught in my throat as he stood up from my desk. “My friend saw you get into Quin’s car and drive it to a guy’s apartment… I know you were with that Liam Payne guy.”
