Chapter Five
“I’m going to the bathroom, I’ll be right back.” Quin said as we made our way to our room. I nodded as I unlocked our dorm room. After taking a step in, I noticed a shadow sitting at my desk. I flipped on the light and saw my boyfriend watching me.
“Jesus, Mitchell.” I said, placing a hand on my chest. “You scared me.” I sighed, putting my leftover change from the movie and lunch in the apartment fund jar before setting my purse down on my bed.
“I’m going to do a lot more than scare you, love.” I cocked my head to the side as he walked towards me. “Josh called and told me he saw you out with Quin at the movies and lunch today.”
“I told you that’s where I’d be—“
“He also said there were two other guys there.” My heart stopped. Please, no. Not right now. “Now, I know you would never lie to me… right, Mels?” I nodded, wrapping my arms around my torso as my heart rate went up in fear. Can’t he just go one day? That’s all I wanted… “Answer me.”
“I would never lie to you.” I said just above a whisper.
“Then why did you lie to me today?”
“I-I didn’t. I told you I was with Quin and I was. I swear.”
“I know you were with Quin, you stupid bitch, I want to know why you didn’t tell me there were other guys there.” The anger in his voice was rising, and I was praying to God that Quin would walk into the room any second now.
“I was afraid you would be angry and I didn’t want to upset you. I know you’re stressed with your mom and work right now, so—“
“Don’t make excuses!” I flinched as he yelled at me. I looked down at the ground and Mitchell wrapped one of his hands around my upper arm, gripping tightly until I looked at him. Tears formed in my eyes as the pain shot through my arm and down to my hand. “You have no idea—“
“Mels do you have any lotion I could borrow?” As the words left Quin’s mouth, Mitchell let go of my arm, my put his around my shoulders. I fought the urge to let out a sigh of relief as my best friend walked through the door, saving me from a possible broken bone. If he waited until later, it wouldn’t be as bad. Maybe a bruise or two… a scratch is a possibility. Nothing hospitalizing. “Ugh. What are you doing here?”
“I was just leaving.” Mitchell announced and placed his lips to my ear before whispering: “You have no idea how mad I can get. Just wait.” A shiver went down my spine as he tenderly kissed my cheek and walked out of the room, allowing me to sigh in relief.
“So what did I miss?” Quin asked, jumping up on her bed.
“Nothing.” I sighed and went over to my desk, rubbing the new sore on my arm.
“Wanna order a pizza for dinner tonight? We could rent movies and stay in.” Quin suggested, worry coating her words. I smiled up at her and nodded.
“Sounds like a plan.”

“Why do the people in this damn show never listen to me!?” I said from under my blanket. Quin and I decided on a Supernatural marathon after watching two cheesy romantic flicks.
“Because it’s in the script?” Quin said before looking over at me. “Can I… uh… come over there?” I nodded and made room on the bed as she ran across the room, jumping up on the bed and hiding under the duvet with me.
“I don’t care that it’s in the script.” I mumbled as I hugged my pillow for dear life. “They should still listen to me. They might survive if they—now why would you do that?! I told you to get in the car and drive away!”

After four episodes, we decided to call it a night and go to sleep (though neither of us would sleep in our own beds after the Bloody Mary episode). The next morning we both screamed at the sound of our alarm clocks. Sure, we had seen these episodes before… but that doesn’t mean they’re any less terrifying.
As Quin left for her first class of the day, I began to get ready for mine and there was a knock on the door. I finished buttoning up my blouse and opened the door, smiling. “Is Quin here?” Fear raised in my stomach as Mitchell asked the question.
“No.” I moved to the side, allowing him in my room.
“Shut the door.”
“I have to go to class soon and—“
“Shut. The. Door.” I did as he asked and took a deep breath before facing him.
Quin’s POV
I looked down at my phone after my second class of the day, unlocking it to message Melody.
Quin: Hey, wanna meet me in the student center for lunch?
Mels: Yeah. Be there in a bit.
I walked into the student center and looked at the different lunch choices. Pizza, sandwiches, Chinese, or salads.
“What are you getting?” I asked as I saw my best friend walk up to me.
“A salad.” She shrugged and made her way to the salad station. I followed her over and decided to get one myself. “How was English?”
“A bore.” I shrugged as I grabbed some ranch dressing. “How was… whoa, what happened to your cheek?” I asked, noticing a scratch that went down her cheekbone. She shrugged as we paid for our food separately and made our way to a table. “Did he…?”
“History was awful as usual.” Melody said, changing the subject quickly. I sighed and listened to her rant about her history class. “I’m just glad the year is almost over. Summer vacation will be amazing this year! Maybe we can go to Paris like we wanted to last year before we started college.”
“Come on, we live in London now. How can you not like that?”
“We used to visit London all the time before we moved here, so it’s normal.” Mels and I had known each other since second grade when we both lived in a small town just outside of London, so London was a normal thing for us. “Imagine what Paris would be like?”
“I guess it would be pretty cool.” I smiled. She was beginning to worry me. She was hiding out in our room more often, changing the conversation, and staying in bed more than she used to. What was Mitch doing to her that had her so… scared?

“So he won’t even let you go to the movie without his permission?” Melody shook her head as tried to focus on her book. “What about… dinner with me?” She shook her head again. “Classes?”
“Of course I can go to classes without his permission. I would like to graduate and make a good living.” Melody snapped at me, her blue eyes looking up at me with frustration before focusing back on her book.
“What about what you wear? Or the makeup you put on?”
“It’s all what he approves.” She said flatly.
“What about the posters on your wall or what you watch on TV?”
“God, Quin just drop it!”
“But it’s wrong! He shouldn’t control every aspect of your life!” Melody shook her head at my statement, refusing to rebuttal. “Is it what you want?”
“Of course.”
“Don’t give me the bullshit answer. Do you love him?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, why?”
“I don’t want to go into this right now.”
“Why do you love him?”
“Just let it go!” Melody nearly screamed. “God, why can’t you just be okay with the fact that I love him and he loves me!?”
“Because he’s hurting you and that’s not okay!”
“Just. Drop. It.” Melody reached over for her phone and plugged her headphones in, drowning me out with her music. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my laptop, opening up my English paper and working on that. Better to distract myself with school work than something unproductive.
Melody’s POV
Why couldn’t Quin just leave me alone about my relationship? It was my relationship. That shouldn’t include anyone else but Mitchell and I. Besides, I loved him, and he loved me.
But that’s not what it’s like in books… or movies… or any other relationship I’ve ever seen or read about.
No. They just didn’t include this, right? They make you think love is wonderful, and the only pain you experience is heartbreak, but they’re wrong… right? I couldn’t start thinking like this. I never doubted Mitchell’s intentions before, so why now? I tried to shake the thoughts out of my mind as I pulled my headphones out, but they kept returning. Why was I suddenly having doubts about mine and Mitchell’s relationships? Could I be happier with someone else? Of course I couldn’t. He only had my best interest at heart, and no one could love me as much as he does…
I was pulled from my thoughts as my mobile vibrated on the bed next to me.
Liam: Hey, would you like to come over Saturday and watch a movie?
Melody: I’ll have to get back to you on it… not sure if I’m doing anything.
Liam: Aww, come on. It’s just us two friends hanging out. You could even invite Quin if you’d like.
I took a deep breath and looked over at my best friend who was furiously typing away on her laptop and mumbling something about ‘just trying to be a good friend’. She would be my way of getting out of trouble with Mitch…
I shook my head and replied to Liam.
Melody: Nah, you and I could hang out alone. It’s been a while since we’ve done that. Just text me your address and I’ll be there Saturday.
After getting Liam’s address, I put my phone away and went back to my book.
“Jesus, Mitchell.” I said, placing a hand on my chest. “You scared me.” I sighed, putting my leftover change from the movie and lunch in the apartment fund jar before setting my purse down on my bed.
