Chapter Twenty

Liam’s POV

Three weeks into tour, Melody started acting really, really strange, and really, really distant. Worse than I was after I got her back from Mitchell.

I watched as she hunched over her laptop, signing up for the summer semester classes. “Babe?”

“Hmm?” She muttered and continued to look at her open book full of different classes.

“Are you okay?” She nodded and flipped three pages forward in her book. I sighed and began to walk out of the hotel room. “Do you want to go to dinner later?” She looked up at me and smiled before nodding again.

“Yeah, we can go after I finish up these classes.” She pushed her curly locks behind her ear. “I’ve only got two more to go.”

“Alright.” I smiled and kissed the top of her head before rummaging through my suitcase and slipping the little velvet box into my pocket.

“Ready when you are.” I looked up at her and smiled as she shut her laptop. The box burned in my pocket as nerves took over my whole body.

Melody’s POV

I shut my laptop and slipped my shoes on before meeting Liam at the door and slipping my hand into his. “Your hands are sweaty.” I giggled and kissed his cheek as we walked out of the door.

“Are they? I… didn’t notice.” Liam shrugged as he lead me to the elevator.

“What are you so nervous about? You’ve been doing this for three weeks now.” I nudged him as we rode down.

“Doing what?”

“Performing every night…?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “What else would I be talking about?”

“Nothing… I don’t know what’s wrong. I’m just nervous, I guess.”

“Right…” I shook my head and sighed as we walked out of the elevator. I stopped and chatted with some fans as Liam took pictures and signed CD’s.

“So it’s easy being in a relationship with him?” I turned to the young blonde teenage girl who had asked me the question.

“I wouldn’t say easy, but it’s the best I’ve ever been in.” I smiled as I watched him pose for a picture with a girl no older than seven.

“Are you two going to get married?” I could hear the envy in her voice.

“Oh, god no. Not anytime soon.” I shook my head. “I’m still in school so it’ll be a few years before marriage is even discussed.”

“I swear to god, if you hurt him—“

“Are you ready to go, Mels?” I looked away from the crazy look in her eyes and back to my boyfriend.

“Yeah.” I smiled and took his hand as he lead me outside to the cab.

“What was that all about?”

I laughed and shook my head. “She was about to threaten my life, I swear.”

“Yikes.” Liam chuckled as the cab pulled off.

“So what do you think of the States so far?” Liam asked as we walked through the arena the boys were playing at that night.

“I love them.” I smiled and hooked my arm through his. “Everyone is so much nicer here than back home. The food’s much better, too.” I nodded and Liam took in a deep breath.

“Okay, I need to ask you something.” Liam turned to face me as we walked to the middle of the stage.

“Okay, shoot.” I smiled and waited as I watched panic take over his face. “What’s wrong?”

“Okay, so we’ve been together for some time now.” I nodded. “And I love you. I want to spend all of my life with you.” I smiled as he took my hands in his and took (another) deep breath. My heart nearly stopped as he got down on one knee in the middle of the stage.

“Oh god.”

“Will you do me the extraordinary honor of being my wife?” I shook my head. “What?”

“Liam… I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?” He asked and jumped up.

“I’m still in school! I can’t think and stress about a wedding!” I walked away, attempting to run my fingers through my messy red hair.

“We don’t have to get married right away. I mean, we’ll both be busy. I’ll be busy with tour, you’ll be busy with school and—“

“Liam! I’m saying no!” Silence fell over the entire arena as I yelled my answer. “No. I won’t marry you.” I took a deep breath and let it out as a sigh. “I think I should go back to the hotel.” I ran backstage and Liam’s hand wrapped around my arm.

“Melody wait.”

“Liam… I can’t. I can’t do this anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing. I’ll see you after the show.”

“Melody tell me what you mean!”

“I mean we should break up!”
