Chapter Two
Liam’s POV
I looked down at my phone for the tenth time in the past thirty seconds, waiting for Melody to get out of her psychology class. Finally a message from her popped up on my screen.
Mels: My psychology professor literally waited until fifteen minutes after we were supposed to get out to let us out. How shitty is that?
I chuckled and was in the middle of a reply when Louis snatched my phone out of my hands. “Mate, what the hell?” I asked and reached for my phone a second too late.
“Mels? Is this the same girl you were talking to the other day?”
“What’s it matter?” I asked and tried to grab my phone again.
“Let’s see… Very shitty, babe. I’m sorry ): would a… would a what, Liam? A kiss? A date?”
“Lou, just give me my phone back.” I said, extending my hand frustrated.
“Fine.” Louis shrugged and placed the object in my hand. My fingers closed around it and I went back to finishing my text.
Liam: Very shitty, babe. I’m sorry ): would a movie tonight make it better? (;
“Liam’s going on a date!” My head snapped up at the sound of Zayn’s voice as he ran out of the room. I opened my mouth to call after him, but the vibration of my mobile stopped me.
Mels: A movie would make it much better :D
The smile spread across my face was hard to hide. She had said yes.
Liam: Okay. I’ll pick you up at 7?
Melody’s POV
I read Liam’s message with my own smile.
Mels: I’ll meet you there.
It was best to keep Liam away from campus. The last I needed was for Mitchell to hear about some singer picking up his girlfriend. There would be a lot of hell to pay for that move… yet the thought didn’t stop me from accepting Liam’s offer. It wasn’t like it was a date. I would never cheat on my boyfriend. It was just two friends going to see a movie together. No big deal is what I told myself as Quin entered the room looking as though life had defeated her.
“Why are you smiling?” She asked, stealing a glance at me.
I shrugged casually. “Can you do me a favor?” She nodded waiting on me to continue. “If Mitchell comes by will you tell him I’m studying?”
“Sure no problem, but where will you really be?” I debated rather or not I should tell her the truth. Quin was my best friend and I trusted her with my life.
“Liam asked me to go see a movie with him.” A grin played on my lips as Quin excitedly gasped.
“Oh my Thor, no way! You’re going on a date!”
“It’s not a date. I have a boyfriend.”
“So…”
“So going on a date would be cheating. We’re just two friends hanging out.”
Quin placed her small hands on her wide hips. “Does he know you’re in a relationship?” She asked, referring to the Payne guy. I shook my head guiltily. “Well to him it’s a date, so you need to tell someone something.” I nodded knowing her words were true. Maybe I did owe it to Liam to tell him about Mitchell. But I could never tell Mitchell about Liam.
The moment I spotted Liam outside the theater, I walked up to him and tapped his shoulder. “Oh my god! Can I have your autograph?” I chuckled as Liam let out a frustrated sigh as he turned around.
“Yeah, just gotta be quick. It’s my day off and—Mels!” His annoyance immediately turned to relief as a smile spread across his face, nearly reaching his ears. “How was your day?” He asked, wrapping me in a genuine hug. I quickly hugged him back, breaking the comforting embrace too soon.
“Not bad, I suppose, but definitely much better now.”
“Well I’m glad to hear that.” Liam smiled, taking my small hand in his much larger one and leading me over to the register. “Which movie do you want to see?” He asked, throwing me off guard. I had never been asked which movie I wanted to see. It was typically whatever Mitchell wanted to see, we saw.
“Whichever you want to see is fine with me.” I shrugged. “I’ve not seen any previews recently.” I answered truthfully.
“How about…” Liam’s words left him as he looked over the movie choices carefully before making a decision. “Monster’s University? I love Disney Pixar films. Toy Story’s my favorite.” He smiled proudly.
“Sounds great.” I smiled excitedly. I had always loved Monster’s Inc. so this one should be just as great.
“Two for Monster’s University, please.” I reached into my purse as Liam pulled out a plastic card to pay for the movie.
“I’ll pay you back when I get to my car. I left my money in there, it seems.” I said as I continued to search through my purse. Liam chuckled as he took our tickets.
“Don’t worry about it, love.” He smiled and intertwined our fingers before leading me to the theater room. “You don’t mind seeing this, do you?” He asked as we took our seats.
“Are you kidding me? Monster’s Inc. used to be my favorite movie of all time.” I smiled as Liam casually put his arm around me as the lights in the theater dimmed.
~*~
“Thank you for asking me to come with you. I had a lot of fun.” I smiled, truth behind my words for the first time in god knows how long as we walked out of the theater hand in hand.
“I’m glad you came with me.” He smiled as we stopped at my car. Liam turned to face me, taking both of my hands in his. “We should do this again.” I nodded, smiling up at him until I realized how dangerously close his lips were to mine. Everything in me was screaming to kiss him, so you can only imagine how hard it was for me to place my hand on his (very toned) chest and stop him from coming any closer. “I… I’m sorry, I should have asked before just assuming—“
“No, it’s fine I just…” I looked up into Liam’s eyes and could barely bring myself to tell him the truth. Maybe just… one kiss? “I have a boyfriend.” I said in barely a whisper as Liam’s face fell.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, no. I should have known… I mean, how could you not have a boyfriend?” Liam smiled and tucked a strand of my wild red hair behind my ear before backing up.
“Liam…”
“No, really, it’s fine.” He smiled and cautiously approached me before wrapping me in a quick, tender hug.
“Anyway,” I sighed after he broke our contact. I unlocked the car and grabbed the money I owed Liam for the movie before handing it to him. “Here you go.”
“No need to pay me back, honestly.” He politely declined.
“Just take it.” I smiled and placed it in his hand, closing his fingers around it. “It would just eat away at my soul if you didn’t, and I can’t have that kind of guilt on me for the rest of my life.”
“Fine.” Liam chuckled and stuffed the money into his back left pocket.
“I really did have a lovely time.” I smiled. “And you’re right, we should do this again if you want.”
“Definitely.” A smile played on his lips that were practically begging me to kiss him. I sighed before standing on my tip toes and placing a gentle kiss on his cheek.
“See you around.” I smiled and got into my car. Liam’s hand instantly moved to his right cheek and his fingers ran over the spot my lips had gently touched.
“See you later.” He said and shut my car door for me before slowly walking off to his car, hand still resting on his cheek.
~*~
“Melody, I tried to tell him about the study group, but he didn’t listen to me and somehow he found out and I swear I didn’t say a word to him about it. I don’t know who could have known and told him, but—“
“Quin calm down,” I said, trying to hide the panic in my own voice… but why was she freaking out? “It’s okay. I promise. Does he know about…?” I dropped my voice to a low whisper. “Liam?”
She shook her small head fiercely. “No, he just knows about the movie. I nodded and pointed to the door, mouthing ‘is he in there?’ as Quin hung her head and nodded. I took a deep breath before walking in the door.
“Hey, Mitch.” I smiled innocently and set my things on my bed.
“I thought you were at a study group… or that’s what Quin told me.”
“Quin was simply misinformed.” I shrugged and put my arm protectively around her, though I knew no harm would come to her. “I went to a movie with a study group.” I shrugged.
“What movie?”
“Monster’s University.”
“Where at?”
“Downtown London.”
“What time?”
“7:15. Look, I can show you my ticket if you’d like.” Where this sudden courage was coming from absolutely beat me. Mitchell held out his hand as I grabbed my ticket from the purse and handed it to him. He looked over the ticket carefully before handing it back approvingly and walking out the door.
“What the fuck was that all about?” Quin asked, watching as the door came to a shut.
“Just… over protective.” I shrugged and grabbed my Minnie Mouse pajamas before changing and crawling into bed.
~*~
The next morning I woke up to four texts from Liam and two missed calls and a text from Quin.
Liam: Good morning, Melody :)
Liam: I had a lot of fun last night, and again, I’m really super sorry about the whole trying to kiss you thing.
Liam: The truth of the matter is… that I’m in love with you and want to make passionate love to you all night.
“What the hell?”
Liam: Please ignore that last message… my band mate thinks he’s hilarious.
I chuckled and quickly moved my thumbs across my touch screen phone as I replied.
Mels: Well aren’t those some interesting messages to wake up to. ;P
I hit ‘send’ and moved on to Quin’s message.
Quin: Hey, I know you don’t have a class today, but do you wanna get lunch after my Spanish class?
I went to reply, but was interrupted by another text from none other than Quin.
Quin: You’d either be shitting or dead if you’re not replying to me.
Mels: Jeez, I just woke up. Give a girl a break, yeah? Let me shower and I’ll meet you for lunch.
Quin: Oh… okay!
I rolled my eyes at my best friend before grabbing a pair of faded skinny jeans and my favorite Peter Pan shirt before grabbing my shower caddy and towel and running to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
Quin: Where the hell are you? I need a milkshake in my life.
Mels: I’m taming the mane, give me five minutes and I’ll be down.
Quin: It disgusts me how quickly you get ready in the mornings
I smiled at the message before attempting to blow dry my hair straight(er). When I failed miserably, I gave up and applied a thin line of eyeliner around my bright blue eyes and tried my best to cover up every freckle on my face. When I gave up on the freckle coverage, I was ready to go meet my best friend for lunch. This was a daily routine for me.
On the way down the stairs, I ran into none other than Mitchell. “Hey, I thought you were with your mom today.” I wrapped my arms around my torso and looked down at the ground.
“No, she’s working.” His voice sounded stern, which was never a good sign… but we were in the stairwell just before lunch, surely students would notice if he was hurting me as they passed by… right? “I just wanted to say that your little study group cover up was good, but I know that they weren’t there, Mels.” I didn’t say anything that might give it away. “Why didn’t you just tell me you went to a movie by yourself? You lied to me, and you know I don’t like it when you lie.” Mitchell sounded so… innocent as a group of students passed by us. His hand reached out and tucked my hair behind my ear, but it didn’t feel the same as when Liam did it the night before. “Don’t worry, sweetie… you’re safe this time, but just remember you won’t get away as easy next time, okay?” I nodded in response. “I’m sorry, what was that?”
“Okay.” I whispered and looked up at him with a fake smile painted on my face.
“I love you, you know. A lot.”
“I love you, too.” Mitchell smiled at my words and quickly stole a kiss from my lips before stepping to the side and letting me go my way.
“Five minutes my ass.” Quin said as I exited our dormitory. “That was more like twenty.”
“Sorry, I ran into Mitchell in the stairwell.” I shrugged and linked my arm with hers before we headed to the parking garage.
“Ugh.” She said and rolled her eyes. “Anyway, Arby’s is for lunch and I’m buying. No debating with me, now let’s go.” I smiled as we piled into her car and drove away from campus.
