Chapter Sixteen
Liam’s POV
I rang the doorbell of the run down house and impatiently waited for someone to answer the door. I genuinely hoped that his mother had given me the right house. The only address listed online for a Mitchell Woodson was his mother’s, and she was kind enough to give me his new home address. “If you’re looking for Melody, she’s not here!” I heard Mitchell say without opening the door.
“What? Are you too scared to open the door to face me? I’m not here to fight you, man. I just want my girlfriend back.”
“Your girlfriend? Ha! Mate, she’s been mine since the day I laid eyes on her.” I ripped the door open and Mitchell’s eyes widened in fear.
“I guess you forgot to lock your door, mate.” I shrugged at the sight of the broken lock.
“You… you broke my door!”
“I’m gonna break a lot more if you don’t tell me where Melody is.”
“Look man… sh-she’s not here!”
“Don’t bullshit me!” I said and grabbed the collar of his shirt, pulling him close enough to hopefully feel the anger rolling off of me. “Where is she?”
“Liam?” I heard a small voice say from the next room. I instantly dropped Mitchell and walked over to Melody, wrapping my arms around her tiny figure, pulling her as close as I could manage. Her arms instantly wrapped around my torso, hugging me tightly as I kissed the top of her head.
“Come on, baby. Let’s get you home.” I said and lifted her face to meet her eyes. Her tear-stained face nearly sent me running back over to Mitchell to kick his ass. He made her cry. He made my girl cry.
Melody nodded and sniffed. “Okay.” She whispered and grabbed my hand as she followed me out to my car. Before I opened her door, I turned her to face me.
“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” I asked, taking her face between my hands and examining every inch of her beautiful face. She nodded and grabbed onto my arms, lowering my hands from her face.
“I’m okay, though.” She smiled as I rested my hands on her shoulders. I guess the worry was evident on my face because she giggled and kissed the tip of my nose. “Really. I’m okay.” I sighed and opened the door for her before she climbed into the car. I shut the door behind her and walked over to the driver’s side before I stopped in my tracks.
That car… that was the car that peeled off. I… I just rolled my eyes and kept walking. If I had taken two seconds to look, I could have stopped this from happening.
“Melody, is that Mitchell’s car?” I asked as I got into the car and started the engine. I looked over at her as she nodded. “Mels… I’m so sorry. I could have stopped all this from happening.”
“Liam it’s okay. You didn’t know.”
“But if I had just taken the time to look—“
“Liam.” Melody cut me off, placing her tiny hands on my cheeks, turning me to face her. “You didn’t know. This isn’t your fault.” She promised me and wiped under my eyes. “Now stop crying.” She giggled. I hadn’t even realized I had been. I quickly wiped under my eyes and cleared my throat.
“Let’s get you home, yeah?” She nodded and I put the car in drive before taking her back to her apartment. “Is Quin home?”
“I don’t think so. I think she’s working a double today.”
I wasn’t about to leave her alone in that apartment again. “You’re coming to my place, then.” I said and quickly turned around.
“Liam, it’ll be fine.”
“I don’t want you alone there again, okay?” Melody sighed and decided against arguing.
Melody’s POV
Sure, Liam didn’t want me alone in the apartment by myself, but I almost didn’t want to be alone with him. He was so angry and he was about to get violent… call me whatever you please, but that terrified me. As soon as we pulled up to Liam’s place, I climbed out of the car and walked in, laying down on the couch. It was a long day and I needed some rest.
“You can lie down in my room, love.” Liam said, kneeling next to the couch and tucking a few loose hairs behind my ear.
“Were you really going to hit him?” I asked, looking directly into Liam’s eyes.
“What are you talking about?” Confusion was written all over his face.
“Mitchell. Were you really going to hit him?” Realization crossed over Liam’s face and he instantly started shaking his head.
“No, no, no. I was just trying to scare him into telling me where you were. No, baby. I didn’t mean to scare you. I wasn’t going to hurt him.” Liam took my face between his hands and ran his thumbs over my cheeks. “I’m so sorry, Melody.” I nodded and took a deep breath before sitting up.
“Can I still lie down in your room?” Liam nodded and stood up, taking my hand and leading me to his bedroom. “Thank you.” I smiled slightly and walked over to his bed, pulling back the covers.
“Here,” I looked over at Liam as he rummaged through one of his drawers. “You can wear these to sleep in.” He smiled and handed me a pair of boxers and a white t-shirt.
“Thanks.” I smiled and took the clothes from him.
“Sleep well. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” I smiled and leaned in to kiss him. He quickly pecked my lips and shuffled out of the room. I shrugged off his strange behavior and changed clothes before crawling into bed and drifting off to sleep.
Liam’s POV
“Hey, mate.” I said as I let Zayn in the door. “What’s up?”
“Nothin’.” He shrugged and sat down on the couch. “Perrie’s not home so I thought I would drop by.” I nodded and sat down, turning on the tele. “How are things with Melody?”
“I don’t know, man.” I sighed and ran my hands over my head. “I don’t know how to act around her. I don’t know what scares her and what doesn’t. I don’t know what she’s comfortable with. I know what she’s used to, but I could never… I scared her today, and that was the last thing I ever wanted to do.”
“It’s gonna be tough, man. You knew that going into this.”
“You’re right, but I’m still not sure how to handle this.”
Zayn scratched his chin in thought. “Just talk to her mate. I don’t know.”
Melody’s POV
An hour later I woke up from my nap and felt much better. My face was still a bit sore, but other than that, I was feeling much better. I made my way down the stairs to get to the kitchen for a glass of water.
“You’re right, but I’m still not sure how to handle it.” Liam’s voice reached my ears as I walked over to the cabinet with the cups. I reached up to grab one before making my way to the fridge.
“Just talk to her mate. I don’t know.” Was that Zayn? Were they talking about me?
“Every time I try to talk to her, she shuts down on me.” I quickly got my water and walked to the doorway to listen. “I love her, but I don’t know how much longer I can do this.” I sighed and walked over to the table and set my glass down. I took a deep breath and walked into the living room where Liam and Zayn were sitting.
“I guess it won’t be much longer.” I said as I walked past them and back up to Liam’s room to change back into my own clothes.
“Melody, wait!” I ran up the stairs and slammed his bedroom door behind me when I was in “Melody, I didn’t mean it like that!” Liam knocked on the door, begging me to let him in. “Baby, please.”
“I don’t want to talk to you, Liam.” I said and yanked the door open, pushing past him.
“Melody—“
“Don’t even try to talk to me right now, Liam. I should have known that once you got something you wanted you’d be done with me.”
“I would never—“
I rolled my eyes as tears threatened to spill over. “After all the shit we’ve been through, you don’t know how much longer you can do this?” I motioned my hand between us. “Well let me make it real easy for you.” I turned on my heel, planning to walk down the stairs, but Liam grabbed my arm and stopped me. “Let go of me.”
“Melody, please. Just listen—“
“No!” I said and yanked my arm away. “Just leave me alone.” I practically begged as I walked away from him.
“Mels, I didn’t mean it like that. I want this,” Liam motioned between us. “For as long as I can have it.” I kept a straight face as he took in a deep breath. “What I said earlier, I meant how much longer I can keep trying to help you.” I didn’t even realized I had gasped until Liam apologized. “No! That’s… god I can’t word this right.” Liam took a minute to figure out what he was going to say. “Okay. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to be careful. I’m always afraid I’ll say the wrong thing and you’ll just leave.”
“You should know by now I’m not just going to up and leave.” I said, referring to my last relationship.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know.” I sighed and sat down in the middle of the hall. Confusion crossed over Liam’s face as he slowly sat down with me. “I just… after knowing what it’s like to be really in love… hearing you say that, it really hurt.” I placed my hand over my heart. “Right here, and I didn’t think it was possible for it to hurt that bad.” Liam took my hand in his, kissing my knuckles.
“I would never hurt you intentionally.” He said just above a whisper. “I would much rather die than purposely hurt you.” I nodded and intertwined my fingers with his. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” I whispered back.
I rang the doorbell of the run down house and impatiently waited for someone to answer the door. I genuinely hoped that his mother had given me the right house.
