Chapter Eleven

Melody’s POV

I woke up to the sound of obnoxious beeping in my right ear, and whispers in my left. As I blinked, I noticed the bright white room surrounding me… was I in a hospital? The last I remember was Mitchell and I fighting and… where’s Mitchell!?

Panic rose in my chest, causing the beeping to get louder and faster. “Whoa, looks like someone’s getting a bit excited. I looked over to where the voice was coming from and noticed a man in a lab coat (he must have been my doctor) and Liam standing in a corner.

“Mels.” Relief washed over Liam’s worried face as he rushed over to me. “Are you okay? Are you in any pain? What happened?”

“Where’s Mitchell?” Whoa, my voice sounded rough. “How long was I out?”

“About two days.” Liam explained, taking my hand in his. “We don’t know where Mitchell is, Mels. He’s not answered any phone calls or texts.” I nodded and tried to sit up. “Melody, what happened?”

“I was in my room after coming back from your place and Mitchell was in the room waiting for me…”

“Did he do this to you?” I slowly nodded and anger ran over Liam’s face for a split second before he took in a deep breath. “Do you know why?” I nodded again, but didn’t say anything. I knew telling him that Mitchell beat me within an inch of my life because I was seen at his house would crush him. “Tell me.”

“I can’t, Li.” I shook my head. “I don’t think you need to know—“

“Please, Mels.” How could I say ‘no’ to him? He had become one of my best friends (whom I just happened to have feelings for…)

“Someone… uh, followed me to your apartment and reported back to him.”

“He… he had people spying on you?” I nodded for the third time. “Melody, that’s not okay… what’s a good relationship with no trust?”

“You don’t understand, Liam—“

“What? He ‘loves’ you? He ‘needs’ you? If he loved or needed you, he wouldn’t treat you like this. He would treat you like you’re his world, Melody, not put you in a hospital bed and not even be here to see his handy work.” I turned my head away from him and shook my head. I knew he wouldn’t understand. All Mitchell wants for me is to succeed in life, or that’s what he told me. “I would never lay a finger on you, you know.”

“Liam, just stop it, okay.”

“You don’t need to let him put you in the hospital Melody. Look at yourself.” I rolled my eyes. “You’re broken, connected to machines, and clearly hurt.”

“I know that!” I yelled watching as guilt washed over Liam’s face. “I know where I am. I know who did it, but I can’t-”

“You can’t what? You can’t leave him?” His voice was thick. I was silent. Liam sighed gently placing a hand on my cheek. “You have to leave him Melody. He’s going to end up killing you and I’m not prepared to lose you.” His voice was soft.

My eyes closed, “I know. I’m done with him. I promise.” I spoke meaning every word. Liam pulled me into his arms carefully. My head tucked under his chin and he let out a heavy breath. It was nice having someone be so attentive to me for a change.

Liam’s POV

Melody was fast asleep once again. I bit my lip in thought turning to look at Quin. She sat in the chair nearest the window.

“Have you talked to her parents?” I asked taking a seat near the hospital bed.

Quin nodded, “Her dad is out of the country on business, but her mum is on the way.” She sighed looking down at her hands. “I should have said something earlier. I should have done something. I knew he was hitting her.”

“She wouldn’t have listened.” I interjected. There was no need for her to feel guilty. This wasn’t her fault. It was his. Mitchell had done this. “I tried a few times and she always got angry and defensive.”

“You love her don’t you?” Quin questioned in a soft voice looking me in the eye. I nodded in defeat. It was stupid of me loving Melody. “She loves you too. She just doesn’t know it yet.” Quin assured me. I began to speak when an older woman who resembled Melody only with lighter hair entered the room. “Mama Scott!” Quin jumped up.

“Quin,” the woman embraced Quin. “Oh God Melody.” She rushed to her daughter’s side. “How did this happen?”

“Her so-called boyfriend did this to her.” I answered bitterly.

Mrs. Scott turned her attention to me. “Who are you?”

“I’m Liam,” I introduced myself standing to greet her.

“He’s Mel’s new friend.” Quin winked. Melody’s mother nodded.

“Well Liam it’s nice to meet you.” She smiled looking down at her daughter. “Oh my poor girl. What am I going to do with you?” That was the question on my mind as well.

“So how do you know Melody?” Sondra (Melody’s mother) asked as we went to a Starbucks around the corner for coffee.

“We came across each other one day and hit it off.” It wasn’t technically a lie. I just left out the ‘met at a club’ bit. I didn’t think that would be appropriate to tell her mother the first day I met her. “We’ve pretty much been friends ever since.”

“I’m glad she’s got at least one good guy in her life. Her father and I have had our suspicions about him since the first day she brought him home.”

“Why is that?” I asked as I opened the door, allowing her to walk ahead of me.

Sondra shrugged as she thanked me. “Just the way he was around her. He always had to be touching her and how protective he would be of her. It worried us for a while, but then we thought we were worrying for nothing because he was her first boyfriend, and she was our little girl… but now this happened, and I…” Sondra shook her head as she walked up to the counter and ordered her coffee.

“I’ll get it for you.” I smiled and paid for ours and Quin’s drinks before walking back to the hospital to check on Melody.

“About time you got here.” Quin smiled as I handed her the hot, caffeinated drink. “I needed this in my life.”

“Has she woken up any while we were gone?” Sondra asked as she looked at her daughter with worry written all over her face.

“Just long enough to ask for Liam, then she was back asleep.” Quin smiled apologetically at Melody’s mother. “I told her you were here, but she was long gone by then.” Just then my mobile rang out and I excused myself from the room.

Melody’s POV

I wiped the sleep out of my eye as I woke again once more from the sound of a Jay-Z song playing through the room. I slowly sat up as the song faded and watched as Liam walked out of the room to answer his phone. “Melody?” I looked over and saw my mom for the first time in two months.

“Mom!” I smiled as she sat her coffee down and walked over to me as fast as she could. “I miss you.” I whispered as she wrapped her arms around me as tightly as she could.

“I miss you too, baby doll.” I wrapped my arms around my mum and hugged her as best as I could. I looked over as Liam walked into the room, putting his mobile back in his pocket and smiled at me.

“Well look who’s finally awake.” Liam made his way over to me and my mum as she let go of me. “How did you sleep, love?” I shrugged and rested my head against the pillow.

“I could use more, but it feels like I’ve been sleeping for weeks.” I looked over at my mom watching Liam who was watching me closely.

“Quin and I are going to get breakfast for everyone.” My mother said quickly as she grabbed my best friend’s arm and practically dragged her from the room. I shook my head and smiled over at Liam.

“Thank you for being here… I’m sure you had other things to do than watch me all weekend.”

“I don’t want to be anywhere else right now.” Liam admitted as he took a seat next to the hospital bead. “Real life kinda sucks for me sometimes.”

“And this is better than your real life?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “You’ve been in the hospital all weekend with me, my best friend, and my mother…”

“You guys don’t seem to care about my job.” He shrugged. “You guys like me for me, and it’s hard to find people like that anymore. Most of the time I don’t know if people like me for who I am, or for what I do.”

“That sounds rough.” I sighed and took Liam’s hand in mine.

“It’s alright. Every now and then I meet someone like you who makes it all worth the struggle.” He gently squeezed my hand as my mom and Quin made their way back through the door.”

“Are… are we interrupting something?” Quin asked as Liam and I instantly dropped each other’s hands.

“Nope, just talking.” I smiled as I grabbed a biscuit from my mom.
