It Takes Patience

Chapter 8: The Assignment

*Reagan’s POV *
I woke up early this morning oppening the shutters in my room and went straight to my tape recorder from Harry’s session. I hit play and listened intently as I did some yoga stretches so that could prepare myself for a possibly longer day than yesterday and try to grasp why Harry was at Maudsley in the first place. The way he and Dr. Baker talked was so effortless, unlike the other sessions I sat in on the other day. I was about to become frustrated when I suddenly noticed a moment of tension between Dr. Baker and Harry. She had asked him something about his home life and there was a long pause before he danced around the question and changed the subject. Before the session was over he even seemed, angry? What was it about his home that brought on this sudden mood change? Today I had to be sure to pay better attention though I know it would be hard for me. There was something about Harry that commanded my complete attention and made me stare, even if it was against my will. Something tells me however I'm not the only one he has this effect on.

I showered, put my hair in a fishtail braid and once again put on my glasses, black pants, and scrubs style top with a name tag I received yesterday from Dr. Baker. As I headed out my flat and down the stairs, I knocked on Laurie’s door and was shocked when I Peyton answered it. He smiled at me, said hello, and stepped aside to let me in telling me that he had just gotten there himself as if I asked for an explanation for his presents in Laurie's flat.

“Hey Reagan I’m just gathering the rest of my shit, lets go.” Laurie said while stepping out of her apartment and locking her door as we all headed down stairs to wait for the van. Peyton actually talked more this time and he was actually really funny, an extrovert in disguise.

When we arrived at the hospital around 9 a.m this time and I went straight to Dr. Baker’s office to got ready for the sessions and assignments for the day. I noticed that I sat in on the same patient’s sessions as yesterday plus a few more in the morning so I knew that I would see Harry again today at 5. When I looked at the clock it read 4:45 and I couldn’t help but feel butterflies in my stomach. It can’t be normal that my body reacts this way from a little crush. It never has before. As Dr. Bakers last patient before Harry left the room I jotted down my final notes on her and only then realized how many notes on the patients I had taken today.

“Are you ready for our next one Reagan?” I heard Dr. Baker ask.

“Yes, just finishing up the notes on the last one."

“Good,” she replied smiling, “can you go out and send for Harry please?” I nodded as I got up and stepped out in the waiting area.

“Harry Styles?” I called and when I saw him my breath hitched in my throat. He didn't have on the beanie today and his hair looked so soft.Despite the mess of curls that whisked throughout the mocha brown tussles, I'm sure fingers could be run through it with ease...particularly my fingers. I turned back in the office before he could see me blush the way I did yesterday, I couldn't for the life of me understand why my mind went there. Today he was wearing a white long sleeved t-shirt, black skinny jeans and black high-top converse and as I followed behind him, my eyes went down to his butt...cute. When he got in the office he pushed his curly hair off of his face into a quiff and sat down on the couch.

“Hi Harold” Dr. Baker said.

“Hello, how are you? You alright?” Harry asked grinning at her and showing his canyon deep dimples.

“I’m great Harold, thanks for asking. Now let’s get started” Dr. Baker replied.

The session went on with what seemed like effortless conversation again today until Dr. Baker mentioned something about home again to Harry. His body visibly tensed and he once again got quiet. He glanced over at me and his eyes were now a dark forest green instead of the light emerald, blue, gold that I’m used to seeing.

“Can we talk about something else?!” he asked in a low tone of voice. He was angry. His mood change was so sudden. Dr. Baker scribbled something down on her note pad and replied with a simple, “Sure Harold,” before she changed the subject.

“Your family and friends are coming round tomorrow right? Are you excited about that?” She asked and Harry’s eyes went back gradually to their original glassy color.

He began to loosen up again, but he wasn't as animated as he was when he came in. He replied to the questions she asked but his mood remained somber and mellowed. They talked for a while longer before Dr. Baker informed us that the session was over. Harry got up said bye to Dr. Baker and I and gave me a small tight lipped grin. I felt my heart beat ten times faster than before.

“Bye H.” H?! He raised an eyebrow at me hearing the nickname I had given him then grinned again before closing the door. I could have sworn his cheeks turned a light shade of pink.

As I gathered my things to go at the end of my day, Dr. Baker asked me to wait a moment before I left. She finished her phone call and then sat at her desk gesturing for me to sit in the chair in front of it.

“I have a slight proposition for you Reagan. As you may have noticed all of the sessions you sat in on today were the same from yesterday. All of them are being considered for discharge and I have deemed them well enough to have an intern shadow them for an assignment. As you know I can’t give you the details in their case files, however, for the assignment I will allow you to choose one of the patients you sat in on today to assess their psyche. As you shadow them for a month and a half and they decide to open up to you about what they've been through, I can’t stop that. You will then have the last month of your internship to write a report on what you studied about them and use that to give your own diagnosis. Would you enjoy that very much or would you rather sit in on various sessions gathering notes and studies that way?”

What Dr. Baker just offered would not only look great on my resume, but it also would give me a chance to get close to a certain curly haired, green eyed, Greek god and understand him better.

There was no reason to hesitate.

“I would be honored to do the assignment.".

“Great! And which patient would you like to shadow?" Dr. B asked. To me this was a no brainer.

“Harry Styles.”
