It Takes Patience

Chapter 1: Acceptance

*Reagan's POV*
I was awake before my alarm clock went off, just lying in bed staring at the ceiling. It had been three months since I had sent in my application for the internship at Maudsley and I had still received nothing in the mail. When I turned over the sun’s rays kissed my skin, almost metaphorically telling me to get up and face the day though my lazy muscles pulled me further into my comfortable cotton bed sheets. As soon as my alarm went off, I slapped it to stop the annoying buzzing sound then sank back down into the confines of my bed before my mom called to me from downstairs.

“Reagan, wake up! It’s here!”

I shot up out of bed and ran into the hallway stopping at the top of the stairs. It was finally here. The letter I had been waiting for that held my fate for the rest of the summer and that could put a major edge to my resume when it was time for me to officially look for places to work as a therapist... What if I got Rejected? I was quickly pulled out of my thoughts when my mom peered at me from the bottom of the stairs; just about as wide eyed, anxious, and excited as I was.

“Hurry up and get down here or I’m going to open it myself! I can’t wait any longer.”

She was wearing her fuzzy pink robe with a coffee in one hand and the letter in the other. My mom followed me into the living room as I took the letter from her running my fingers along the manila envelope and quickly opening it while my mom busied herself with pushing wild tendrils of my hair out of my face.

"Nice and quick," I mumbled to myself.

The quicker the better. The initial sting of a possible 'try again next year' would make me flinch, but eventually the disappointment would die down, leaving me with just a tiny nick in my self esteem. My GPA should be more than good enough to get me in, but if not it would kind of be like ripping off an academic bandage. My hazel eyes glided across the parchment while shakily reading the letter.

Dear Miss Stoger,
It is my pleasure to offer you a position as an intern in my department for the duration of the summer months. We have taken a great interest in you and hope to take you under our wing in order help you further your studies. In order to contact us with your response give us a call with the number provided below and ask for Charles Leerman, the director of Maudsley. I am excited for you and hope to see you here within a weeks’ time...
Dr. Elizabeth Baker

The letter continued on with the number to the Director of the hospital himself and more detail of the work that I would be doing during my stay at Maudsley, but before I realized my actions, I was already in my mothers arms celebrating. I was in.
