We're Alright

Live While We're Young

When we got back to the party, everyone was extremely drunk. The older family members had retreated to their rooms. My dad had made sure that the older family members had the choice to sleep inside. The rest of us were relegated to the tents. I didn’t mind though, the weather was nice and the sky was clear.

“Have you spoken to Gemma tonight?” I asked as we approached the marquee, noticing the boys all in different states of undress; Niall being the worst. He’d clearly been in the pool, and he was stripped down to his boxers. Why had no one stopped him?

“No. I think we should go find her though.” he was looking at his friends, embarrassment written over his face. I couldn’t help but laugh at the look on his face as he dragged me off to find his sister. Harry had changed quite a bit since we were kids, and when I saw him the other night I assumed it would be for the worse, but having spent time with him tonight I could see that it was actually for the better. I imagined it had something to do with the four half naked boys wandering around my garden.

Harry and I walked in silence for a while until we found Gemma. When we did she was out the front of the house talking to people; well I wouldn’t exactly call her screaming ‘talking’.

“What’s going on?” Harry asked, and that was when I heard the screams. Suddenly I knew exactly what was going on. Gemma had been wrong; apparently parents didn’t know boundaries. Suddenly we were surrounded by screaming girls; Harry’s security trying to hold them back.

I don’t know what happened but I saw red. I was drunk and I was angry. Never a good combination.

“You all need to leave now!” I snapped. Apparently that didn’t mean anything because they all continued to shout and compete for Harry’s attention. There were photographers as well, all shouting questions at him.

“I’ve been out here for fifteen minutes, none of them will listen to me.” Gemma growled.

“Harry, you need to go back inside.” I demanded as I turned to him.

“Maybe if I talk with some of them they’ll leave?” he suggested.

“No, because they’re rude little shits and they don’t deserve it.” I made a point to elevate my voice so I knew they could hear me. He tried to argue with me, but I gave him a look that told him not to mess with me. Instead of going back to the party he went through the front door; I assumed so he could listen from the other side of the door.

The girls all began to whine as he shut the door. “You all need to leave before I phone the police.” I said remaining calm.

“Yeah, and what will they do?” scoffed a brunette at the front of the group. She looked about seventeen, but with the way teens dressed now she could have only been about fourteen and I would never know.

“Arrest you. This is private property, MY private property. You weren’t invited and therefore you’re trespassing.”

“Ugh, you’re, like, so stuck up. We just want to meet the boys.” she rolled her eyes.

“Yeah well buy a fucking meet and greet. I don’t know who you think you are, but this is my sister’s wedding. Not a fucking opportunity for you to ‘meet your future husbands’” I mocked.

“Uh, we’re not exactly doing any harm.” Another girl chirped.

“Yes. Yes you are, because now I’m out here dealing with spoilt little brats rather than enjoying my sister’s wedding. You weren’t invited, it’s three in the morning. You need to leave. Call your parents or whatever, but you need to go. This isn’t the time or the place.” I growled. I was fed up. I was probably over reacting.

“Like, we’re their fans though. They should want to meet us. We’re the reason they’re famous.” The brunette chirped.

“You think they wanna meet you? You’re creepy little stalkers who won’t leave them alone” Gemma barked.

“Listen, I’m sure they want to meet you, just not now! It’s their down time. They just want to relax and enjoy what little down time they have with their friends. It’s really not appropriate for you guys to be here. Now you all need to leave. If any of you are still here in the next twenty minutes, I’m phoning the police. You guys especially!” Making a point of the photographers who were still there snapping away. Did they not have something more interesting to do with their time. It was just One Direction at a wedding, they weren’t doing anything special. I had tried to calm down. Getting angry wasn’t helping. I walked over to the burly security guard, one I recognised from the concert. “You need to make sure someone comes and picks each of them up. I’m not going to be the one responsible if one of them ends up dead in a ditch, okay?” I made sure he understood I was serious before going inside to check on Harry.

When I opened the door he was sat on the stairs waiting expectantly. “How did it go?” he asked.

“I think they’re going to leave, but I also think they hate my guts, so you know, that could be fun when I check twitter in the morning!” I chuckled light-heartedly. I imagined I’d be receiving a lot of hate from petty teenage girls.

“Just, don’t pay attention to it; they’re not all like that…their opinions don’t matter any way.” he slurred sleepily. I couldn’t help but giggle slightly. It was like watching a sleepy baby fight to stay awake because they were so concerned they were going to miss something.

“Come on, let’s get you to bed.” I said as I picked him up off the stairs.

“No! Let’s go join the party!” he grinned cheekily, and there was that sparkle again. How could I refuse? I rolled my eyes as I followed him through the house and out the back door. The party was still in full swing, Jenna and Gemma were slut dropping on the dance floor and I couldn’t help but laugh hysterically. Harry turned to me in confusion and all I could do was point. His head snapped in the direction of his sister and the look on his face was more than I could handle, I was on the floor laughing so hard I could barely breath. One of the things about Harry that I loved was; he always wore his every thought on his face and as he watched his sister slut dropping he looked like he was ready to gouge his eyes out.

“Please, please let me never see that again.” he cried, only making me laugh harder. Finally I managed to calm myself down and pick myself up, Harry didn’t seem amused by the situation at all.

“I’m so sorry, but that was hilarious.” I gasped. It probably wasn’t as funny as I thought, but I was drunk and easily amused. Harry began to grumble, but I could tell from the expression on his face he wasn’t really mad at me.

“AMELIA!” I heard a shout from across the garden, that was more like a field if I was honest. It was dark outside and I couldn’t see who had called my name but apparently Harry had because he began to pull me in a random direction away from the rest of the party.

As we got closer I realised who had called my name, it was Louis. Since we’d been gone he’d also stripped down to nothing but his boxers. I was really confused about why these boys felt the need to strip. Even though it was the middle of summer, it wasn’t exactly warm, but when was it in England? “What are you doing?” I questioned as I noticed the other boys all lying around on the floor next to him, all in a similar state of undress.

“We’re watching the stars!” Zayn said longingly. I was pretty sure he’d been smoking more than cigarettes.

“Let’s go in the pool!” Niall suggested as he leapt up from the floor, and before I knew what was going on I was being dragged towards the pool.

“Come on Amelia, you know you wanna get in.” Louis said as he wiggled his eyebrows. “Come on, you’ve seen us in our underwear, I think it’s only fair.” his look was so daring that I couldn’t refuse. Harry stood beside me, staring blankly as I began to strip off my dress and shoes.

“Come on Harry!” I giggled as I finished unzipping my dress, before taking a running jump and diving in the pool. I felt my body go ridged with how cold it was, but ignored it as I swam about. “What are you waiting for?” I called to Harry, who was still stood by the edge of the pool.

“You’re all crazy.” he replied, his voice slow and gruff. So different to how I remembered it. Chuckling he took of his clothes and joined us in the barely lit pool.

“Fuck me, this is cold!” I shouted as he lowered himself in. I was just about to say something when I felt a pair of arms snake around my waist and suddenly my feet left the ground.

I couldn’t help but let out an almighty squeak as I felt myself being spun around before I was finally let go to fall back in the water. I gasped, inhaling water, before I finally felt myself surface; coughing and sputtering. I turned around to see who had done it but it didn’t take a genius to work out when I saw Louis’ face.

I flung myself at him, dragging him under the water with me. When we came up we were all laughing. I couldn’t help but let a huge shit eating grin out across my face. Hanging out with the boys had been a real eye opener, and it had been a lot more fun than I anticipated. I’d genuinely enjoyed all their company, and hanging around with Harry had made me a little nostalgic. I hadn’t thought much about Holmes Chapel since I left, something about this place always seemed small and pointless, but seeing him here again I realised there was nothing small and pointless about this place. It was home, and no matter where I was in the world, this place would always be home. Harry was right though, we didn’t belong here anymore. Maybe one day we would again, but part of me hoped not. I wanted to find somewhere new to belong.

We spent the rest of the night lounging by the pool and drinking, it wasn’t until the sun came up we decided to call it a night. At one point their security had come to inform me that all the girls had gone and that so had the reporters. I was glad. I didn’t want them to ruin Jen’s night. About an hour after Louis nearly drowning me in the pool, Gemma came and joined us. Jenna and Ben had decided to head to their hotel for the night because they had an early flight, but the rest of the party was still going till nearly five. After that it was just us. It felt so natural to be around them, nothing like I had imagined. It was confusing to me, I’d never been close to Harry when we were younger, but now I felt like we’d never been apart. I wasn’t sure that he felt the same, he probably didn’t think anything of it.

I slipped into my pyjamas, and went to climb in my tent, when I opened it I was shocked to see Harry’s sleeping figure. Why was he here? I poked him gently in the side to wake him, but he merely groaned and rolled over. I thought about waking him but he looked so peaceful, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Instead I just unzipped my sleeping bag and lay it over both of us. I’d have to ask him what was happening in the morning, or well afternoon which seemed more likely, because when my head hit the pillow everything began to spin and then I blacked out.
