We're Alright
That Girl
Two years ago if you’d have told me that Harry Styles would be a teen heart throb in the biggest boy band in the world I’d have laughed in your face. To me he was just the annoying boy that sat behind me in maths class, who tried too hard to be funny and threw stuff at the back of my head when the teacher wasn’t looking. I’d have been wrong though, because now I was sat in the front row of a One Direction concert, staring up at the face that had tormented me for so long; he’d made it. Thousands of girls were screaming his name; singing along to his songs and begging him to marry them. Looking at him it was hard to see the boy I knew from Holmes Chapel. The Harry I knew could barely make a presentation in front of class without nearly passing out, but here he was, on stage, performing to thousands of people.
The screams became deafening as they walked off stage. It took everything I had not to cover my ears with my hands. I looked down at my little sister, I’d never seen her happier, looking at her made tonight worth it. She’d had her first concert, and it was to see her favourite band. I was just glad to be the one to share the experience with her, even if it was a band I didn’t care much for. I smiled fondly at the memories of my first concert. I’d seen Green Day as my fourteenth birthday present and it had been the best night of my life. A crowd of 20,000 people and I had been there, right at the front. Never had I experienced something so amazing.
“Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this meant to me!” Tabby squealed as we began to leave the arena.
“You’re welcome. I’m sorry I wasn’t more fun, I should have given the ticket to Alice.” Alice was a friend of the family, she was sixteen but her and Tabby got on like a house on fire.
“No! I’m glad you took me, I missed you and I’m just glad I got to spend time with you!” she grinned, wrapping her chubby arms around my waist. I wanted to cry. Since I had started university I’d hardly been home to see her; before I left we fought like cat and dog but since I’d been gone we’d been getting on so much better. I’d begun to appreciate her more and her me.
“Well I’m just glad you had fun, now hurry up because I still need to get you home and be back in time for my class tomorrow!” Realistically I didn’t have time for tonight, I was behind in class and I needed to catch up but, something I was always taught growing up was that no matter how busy you are you always make time for family.
We were in the car park before I’d even realised I’d left my handbag behind.
“Shit. Tabby I forgot my bag, here are the keys, I’m going to go back and get it. I won’t be long, lock the door behind you!” I watched her climb into the car and lock the doors before I ran back towards the venue. I wasn’t really comfortable leaving her, but I had a nine hour car journey back home and it was nearly midnight, it didn’t leave me with much of a choice.
I tried to run back inside but I was stopped by a beefy security guard. “Where do you think you’re going? No one is allowed back inside.” he scowled.
“I left my bag in there.” I tried to explain, but the security guard was still being stubborn and refusing to move.
“I still can’t let you back in mam; you’ll have to come back in the morning to get it.”
“I can’t come back in the morning, I’ll be in Dundee.” I groaned. I needed my bag back, it had the keys to my flat in and my USB stick with my essays that I needed to hand in the next morning. “Please, my ten year old sister is alone in my car, please just let me get my bag so I can go back to her.” I was beginning to worry about her; Tabby didn’t like being left alone.
“I’m sorry; there is nothing I can do. Maybe if you wait a few hours until the band have left.” he looked genuinely sorry, but he wasn’t going to let me in.
“Can you not ask someone to go and get it for me?” I asked, hopeful.
“I’m afraid not, it’s against protocol.” I wanted to scream. How could fetching a handbag be against protocol? I felt my eyes begin to well with tears. I needed that bag. I slumped down on the curb, taking notice of the now nearly empty car park. I could see a few eager fans still waiting around by the tour bus in hopes that they’d get to meet their idols, but almost everyone had left now.
Just as I was about to stand up and walk back to the car in defeat, a minivan pulled up in front of me, cautiously I took a step back. I wasn’t sure who it was, or why they had stopped there and it made me somewhat nervous. A man dressed a lot like the security guard behind me stepped out of the driver’s side and walked towards the front door. When he came back a few seconds later he was followed by five boys in hoods. I heard the girls by the tour bus begin to scream, assuming they had noticed the boys walking past me, but a similar scene was occurring next to the tour bus. It didn’t take a genius to work out what was happening. They had five boys dressed in hoodies with their faces covered making their way to the tour bus to give the real boys a chance to escape out of the front entrance.
I was just about to make my way back to the door to see if I would be allowed inside now, but just as I was about to make my way forward a security guard stopped me. It was then that I noticed one of the hooded boys looking at me. “Amelia?” Great.
“Hey?” my voice shook, I wasn’t even sure why. I’d not seen Harry in nearly three years, aside from tonight, but now I was closer to him I could see just how much he had changed. His eyes seemed darker, his face more shallow, and his smile didn’t glow the way it had when he was tormenting me. I bit my lower lip, unsure what else to say.
He hesitated a moment, studying me, “What are you doing here?” he asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“I brought my little sister to see you.” I managed to answer but his eyes began to scour the area around me and I realised it seemed like I was lying. “Uh, she’s in the car, I left my bag inside I came back to get it but they won’t let me back in.” I glared at the man who was now stood next to Harry, whispering something in his ear.
Harry turned to him and glared, “Give me a moment please? Why wouldn’t they let you back in?” he scowled at which point Louis moved forward.
“Who’s this Harry?” he smiled at me and I couldn’t help but smile back, there was something contagious about his smile.
“This is Amelia. I used to go to school with her. I sat behind her in maths.” he explained.
“He’s missing out that part where he used to throw stuff at me!” I chuckled and Louis rolled his eyes.
“Why wouldn’t they let you in?” Harry asked, ignoring what I had just said.
“Probably because you guys were still inside. Sorry Harry I really have to go, I’ve left Tabby in the car, and I have to drive back to Scotland tonight.” I felt rude but I was tired and I felt bad for leaving her, she’d be worried by now.
“Of course. Take her to get her bag.” he demanded of the security guard stood next to him. “See you soon, Amelia. I hope things are going well for you.” he smiled.
“You too, Harry. It was nice to meet you Louis.” I smiled, as I began to follow the security guard inside.
“You too Amelia!” and with that they were climbing in the van, the door shutting behind them and they were gone.
I thought that was the last I was going to see of Harry, but I should have known better, of course it wouldn’t be.
