Malik's Daughter

Chapter 5 - More Surprises

I spent every night thinking about Zayn, or should I say, my dad. Flashes of his tanned skin inked with tattoos kept occuring in my dreams. He seemed more like a teenager than a parent. How can that guy be my father?

But what I was more curious about was the fact that Uncle Louis, Uncle Liam, Uncle Niall, and Uncle Harry were once the world's most popular boy band with my supposed father. It was driving me crazy not being able to mention any of this to my mum. I would have asked her by now, but it was just that I was frightened to hear what she would say.

So many questions kept surfacing every day I kept it to myself. I felt like I would explode by the time I actually got around to asking someone about this.

"Ellie! Come down here! I've got a surprise for you!" mum called.
I groaned and and pushed my covers off, getting out of bed. It was Saturday morning and I wanted to sleep in, but guess that wouldn't be happening. Besides, I don't think I would have been able to sleep anymore, even if I wanted to. My head was throbbing from the hours I'd spent pondering over me being the daughter of two famous singers.

I yawned widely, stretched myself out, and trudged down the stairs in my pajamas. When I got to the bottom, I froze, seeing the surprise my mother was talking about. I couldn't believe my eyes. A huge grin found its place on my lips and I ran forward and brought Uncle Harry into a bear hug.

Uncle Harry, Aunt Samantha, Darcy and Kailyn were standing in our entrance hall with their luggages by their sides. It had been nearly two years since their last visit from Los Angeles. Uncle Harry and Aunt Samantha live in the United States, but visit us once in awhile. I had always wondered how we knew them, since they live in the US and we live here in the UK. I guess I know the answer now. Zayn and Uncle Harry were in a band together.

Kailyn, their oldest daughter, was the cutest 2 year old I'd ever known. Now, she had a younger sister, Darcy. I'd never seen Darcy, until now. I couldn't get over how adorable she was. Aunt Samantha was carrying Darcy on her waist, talking to my mum. Uncle Harry was still trapped in my hug, trying to wriggle out by tickling me. Kailyn was standing quietly by her mother's side without saying a word. I always thought of them as the perfect family, for some reason. I'd always wanted a father like Uncle Harry. A chill-like dad who always took everything lightly. A father who was hilarious and fun to be around. Uncle Harry had sorta been my god-father. Not exactly, but in a way. I loved him in a father-like way. But now, I guess I have a father of my own.

I finally let go of Uncle Harry, gasping for air. He had tickled me enough to get me out of breath. He laughed, patting my head. I raised my eyebrows at him.
"Uncle Harry, I'm not a dog for you to pat my head," I pointed out.
"Really? I thought you were. Ellie! Oh Ellie! Who's a good boy? Sit! Sit! Who wants a treat? Sit boy, sit!" he joked, patting my head again. I giggled.
"So, El. How've you been?" Aunt Samantha asked.
"Great, Aunt Sam! How're you?" I replied.
"Wonderful! Right Darcy?" she asked her 1/2 year old daughter.
Darcy muttered something we didn't understand, smiling at me.
"Oh, El! You haven't seen Darcy, have you?" Uncle Harry asked.
I shook my head.
"Well, here she is!" he said, gesturing toward Darcy.
"Hey Darcy. You know who I am? I'm Ellie," I said, bouncing her little hand in mine.
She giggled.
"Daddy, I'm hungry!" Kailyn whined. I had totally forgotten about her! She was still standing quietly, but was now tugging her dad's pant.
"Kailyn! Hey! How are you? Do you remember me?" I asked her, lifting her up and placing her on my waist.
She nodded. "You're Ellie-Bellie," she said, smiling.
I chuckled, "Yup, that's me!" I said.
"Hey, Kailyn, come with me. I've got some pancakes ready. You want some?" my mother asked her, taking Kailyn from me.
"So, let's go in," Uncle Harry said, following me into the living room. They put their suitcases down and took a seat on our couch. I sat opposite to them on the loveseat.

We had a rally of small talk for nearly an hour. My mother joined us after Kailyn had finished her pancakes. Apparently, Uncle Harry and Aunt Samantha were going to stay with us for a few weeks. They had come to visit us since they had a two month summer vacation right now. Uncle Harry had planned some great adventures for us, but wouldn't tell us what it was. That's one thing I loved about Uncle Harry. He planned great trips, but always kept it a surprise. And I loved surprises. I knew this was going to be a great visit.

My mother went to set the table for the rest of us to eat breakfast. Aunt Samantha went to help. Kailyn and Darcy were running around our house playing hide and seek. Uncle Harry and I were still sitting in the living room, talking. That was when it hit me. If anyone is going to tell me about who this Zayn is and if he really is my father, it will have to be Uncle Harry.
"Uncle Harry. I have a question," I said.
"Yes?" he asked.
At that moment, Aunt Samantha came in and sat down next to Uncle Harry.
"Your mother refuses to have me help," she said with a smile, "I'm sorry. Did I interrupt? Go ahead," she said.
"Oh, no, it's fine. I was just about to ask Uncle Harry a question," I said.
"Go ahead," she told me.
"Well, a week ago, I was at Uncle Louis' house and... well... this guy came in. Zayn..." when I said that, Uncle Harry and Aunt Sam's expression turned worried, "And I was wondering if you knew anything about who he is," I finished.
"Zayn isn't someone you should be worried about. He's just a friend of ours and -" Uncle Harry began.
"Harry, this is not a question for us to answer. Ellie, sweetie, you should talk to your mother about this," Aunt Sam said.
"Yea, of course, you're right. But it's just that I was browsing the web the other day when I read something a bit peculiar. I think..." I took a deep breath, "I think that Zayn could be my... father," I said, whispering the last word.
"Ellie, -" Uncle Harry said, just to be interrupted by Aunt Samantha again.
"Harry," she warned.
Uncle Harry looked at Aunt Samantha and nodded once.
"Ellie, all you need to know right now is that the public gets things wrong most of the time. Ok?" Uncle Harry said.
I frowned.
"Ellie, if you want to know more, ask your mother," Aunt Sam said.
I nodded. That was the end of that conversation. My mother called us to the dining room, saying the pancakes were ready. We got up and walked out of the living room and into the dining room.

Uncle Harry's sentence repeated itself in my mind. 'All you need to know right now is that the public gets things wrong most of the time.' New thoughts flooded into me. What if Zayn isn't my father. What if he is just a friend of Uncle Louis'? What if he is just someone my mother dated once upon a time? I mean, there was no proof that I was Zayn's daughter or anything, right?
