Finally, the planes descending.
It’s been about half an hour and Lux has fallen asleep, her tiny body looking even smaller in the massive jet chair. The heavy seat buckle lay across her lap.
I sit back in my chair and look out the window.
Its sunset in Florida.
To be honest, it’s beautiful, but I couldn’t let my mother know that I thought that, otherwise she’d be all “I told you you’d enjoy touring.”
And that would be the biggest load of bullshit anyone would ever hear.
I watch as the ground came closer to the jet, until they finally met.
Normally, babies cry when planes descend, because gravity made their ears pop, but not Lux. She was so used to travelling by air that it didn’t bother her anymore.
The plane came to a halt and I squeeze past Lux’s chair and reach up for our luggage.
I pull it down. It’s heavy, and I struggle as it plummets to the ground.
I look at Lux, who has woken to the thud.
She rubs her eyes with tiny fists. Stretches her arms. Puts them out to me and pumps her fists.
Pick me up.
I push past the luggage, unbuckle her and pull her out of her seat. Place her on my hip. With Lux in one arm, I fight to pick up the several bags of Lux and I’s possessions with the other.
“Need some help?” A sweet voice asks.
I turn to face Louis.
As much as I don’t want to admit it, I do.
I nod. “Yup!”
He smiles, showing his straight, white teeth. Picks up all 4 bags with ease. Nods to the exit of the jet with a smile.
I smile sheepishly and carry Lux off the jet and down onto the ground. There is a large black Van already waiting for us once we’re all off the jet.
I know why. So screaming, crying, hysterical girls don’t ambush us and mentally scar my baby sister.
Louis puts all of Lux and I’s luggage in the boot of the van.
“Thanks for that.” I say to him.
He smiles again. “It’s cool.”
For some reason, Louis seems different. He was shy around me, whereas all of the others acted like I was somewhat part of the ‘family.’ To me, I couldn’t be related to them. They took my mother. I didn’t really care for me, but for Lux? I could never forgive them.
But, Louis treated me with genuine care. But, he was so shy whenever I was there.
Louis was weird.
I crawl into the van and place Lux on my lap. My mother eagerly takes her off me.
“Hey baby!”
Lux garbles. Open and closes her mouth.
“What are you doing?” My mother looks at her, confused.
“Wow mom. You know her so well.” I say sarcastically and roll my eyes.
“Watch the way you talk to me Shelby.”
“Shubee.”
Lux looks over at me. Open and closes her mouth. Pleads.
My mother turns Lux so her back is towards me.
“No! No!” Lux says.
Her voice shatters and she starts to cry.
My mother huffs and places Lux back on my lap. I wrap my arms around her protectively as she clings to my shirt.
She stops crying and shows me her two teeth.
“I know bub.” I say and lean over to grab her food bag.
Shit, it’s in the boot where Louis put it.
By this time, where already driving and everyone is packed in the van.
I look up at Louis.
“Did you put a small blue bag in the back of the van?”
He nods. “Yeah, why?”
“It has Lux’s food in it.” I say.
“Oh man, sorry. I didn’t realise.” And he actually looks genuinely sorry.
I nod slowly. “It’s cool. As long as you don’t mind dealing with an upset baby until we get to the hotel.”
He laughs, but Niall, Harry and Zayn sigh. “Seriously?” Harry says. The other boy Liam doesn’t mind. Personally, I think he loves Lux. He always looks at her adoringly.
“Yes. Sorry that my 1 year old sister is hungry and doesn’t understand the concept that she can’t have anything now.” I reply to Harry’s remark.
My mother hits my shoulder. “Don’t be rude.”
“Tell that to him.” I signal to Harry.
“Psh.” Harry smirks at me.
