Love and Lies

Chapter 5:

When I left Damien, I walked to the top of the steps and heard some whispering.
“You know, before I didn’t want her to go. But after that mess, she needs to get away. She needs to be her own person.” My mom whispered to my dad.
“I understand. And trust me, Mila, our baby girl needs this. She needs to find herself. I’m going to miss her terribly, but we can’t hold on forever.” My dad said his voice cracking. I decided to walk downstairs at that point.
“Mom, Dad, where’s Alexander?” I asked as when I looked around.
“Oh honey, he left. Your dad and I tried to get him to come in the house so we could clean him up and he just up and ran off.” My mom said gently.
“Oh. I just wanted to apologize for Damien, but I guess not,” I said tiredly.
“Sweetheart,” my mom said softly, “seeing Alexander…. How was it?”
“I was shocked at first, then horrified when him and Damien fought but at the same time I was kinda happy. Not that he deserves to get his ass beat again, but the fact that maybe he will feel the hurt that I felt.”
“Ella,” my mom scolded, “but I understand.”
“That son of a bitch deserves to get his ass kicked everyday as far as I’m concerned.” My dad said angrily. “We welcomed him into our house. He was like a second son to us. And that’s how he treats our daughter? I hope he has herpes or something for acting like that.”
“Jonathon!”My mom says gasping. “In front of Ella, really. That’s not necessary.”
“I’m sorry Ella. I’m just so frustrated. And I know Thomas and Theresa are upset because we haven’t been over that much, but how can we when her son broke our daughter’s heart.” My dad said troubled.
“I know. Theresa and I talk on the phone sometimes, but it’s not the same.” My mom said.
“Guys I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for that to mess up your relationships with his family,” I said apologetically.
“Ella, stop. It’s not your fault.” My mom replied. As soon as she said that, the doorbell rang. With all the drama, I almost forgot I was leaving.
I ran to the door and opened it, excited to leave this mess.
“Hey!” Layla cheerfully exclaimed. “Wait. Why do your parents have that look on their faces? Why do you look upset?” While Layla was bombarding me with questions, Damien came down stairs, the scratches visible on his hands and arms.
“What happened? Why do you look like that? Damien, did you get in a fight?” Layla kept firing these questions at us.
Finally Damien answered her, “Layla, take a deep breath please. Look, Alexander came over here. I don’t know why, maybe to get another ass beating. I went to the door to see who it was, and I seen him. I freaked out and just started hitting him and then Dad came over and pulled me off of him.”
Layla turned to me with wide eyes, silently asking if this was true. I just nodded.
“Sweetie, you need to get going if you’re going to catch the flight,” My mom stated, trying to get Layla and I out of our silent conversation. “Damien, go get your sister’s bags please. Girls, I made you guys some lunches; airport food is expensive and disgusting.” I nodded at my mom.
When Damien returned with my bags, Layla and I still hadn’t said a word. We just stared at each other, nodding every now and then.
“Okay girls, we’re gonna miss you a lot. Call every couple of days to let us know what’s going on okay?” My dad asked, looking at both of us. Finally Layla said, “Of course. We’ll watch out for each other.”
My mom had begun crying at this point. “I love you guys so much. Be careful and have fun because after this, I’m never letting yous out of my sight.” I giggled and pulled her into a hug.
Damien came over and hugged Layla and whispered something into her ear. I saw her smile slightly and nod when he pulled back. I gave her a questioning look and she just waved me off. Damien then came over to where Mom was still squeezing the life out of me.
“Mom. Mom. Let Ella breathe.” He said chuckling. He then turned to me and hugged me. “Els, I’m gonna miss you. Be careful.” I nodded and hugged him tighter. After he let me go I looked and saw my mom hugging Layla too.
“Guys we really need to leave. I love you and I’ll see you soon.” I said and Layla let go of my mom. My dad came over and hugged me, “Sweetheart, I love you. Have fun.”
“I love you too. Bye” I said walking out the door with Layla.
“Bye,” my whole family yelled. I looked around at my house and started to walk away. I’m starting a new life now.
