The Mess We Became
Cryptic
I was so confused. Last night Harry blew me off, and I had no clue why.
That’s a lie. I had a slight inkling why and his name was Cameron, but I thought I had already talked to Harry about it. I thought he understood that he was still important to me.
I was just very confused.
And then there was Louis, who turned me away at the van and then spent the rest of the night making sure I left Harry alone. It was all so strange. I was never, not allowed to see Harry.
Normally Harry telling me to leave him alone would just piss me off since, more often then not, it was said to piss me off. I probably would have just bitched him out if it hadn’t been for the look on his face while he was doing so.
Honestly, it was probably that look and the fact that Louis was trying so hard to keep me away that resulted in me not sleeping.
In fact, at a little past 5am this morning I found myself in a room that was ridiculously too neat, all my bags packed and set ready to be loaded onto my designated bus and no desire what so ever to sleep.
No, Harry’s face had haunted me. I wanted nothing more then to go speak to him but for the first time ever in our friendship Harry hadn’t answered any of my calls or text.
Deciding that being in my room was really starting to aggravate me, I left. Opting to go down to the restaurant in the hotel as opposed to ordering room service.
As my eyes swept the almost completely empty tables littered around the wide space my mind clicked with an idea. It was a long shot and I was probably going to get a grumpy response because of the very early hour but I had to try.
I turned back to the hostess I had just requested a table from. “Actually, never mind on the table. Can I place an order to take up to my room?”
She nodded, looking a little puzzled with why I would come all the way down here just to take my food up when I could have ordered it from my room.
A little under an hour later I was back on our floor and I was on a mission.
Balancing the two styrofoam containers in one hand and two bottles of orange juice in the other I made my way towards Harry’s suite door. My eyes constantly scanning for any sign of Louis.
Something about the way he had handled everything last night made me believe that he would try his hardest to keep me away from Harry just a bit longer.
I wasn’t about to wait any longer though.
Gathering my courage and taking a deep breath I brought my knee up to kick at the door. A few minutes passed and then the door opened a fraction of an inch, one green eye peeking through the crack at me.
I smiled shyly holding up the containers in his line of sight.
“A peace offering.” I said when I got no reaction at the sight of food.
That one eye gazed at me for a second longer before he let the door open fully, allowing me entrance into his room.
I quietly made my way into the room kicking the door closed behind me.
Harry, who had obviously just woken up, slouched back onto the foot of the bed, viciously rubbing at his eyes, clad in only his Armani boxer-briefs.
I decided to try and lighten the mood. I never was good with heavy.
Grabbing the top container I popped it open and brought it within inches of Harry’s face where I began to wave it enticingly. “I got our traditional breakfast. Chocolate chip pancakes and bacon.”
He dropped his hands from his face and stared up at me with a blank look.
I let my eyes shift from his tired blood shot eyes to his sleep matter curls before wiggling my eyebrows and smiling. “The lady downstairs said they make the best pancakes.”
Again, all I got out of him was a silent stare.
Sighing deeply I turned back to the table I had placed the rest of the food and then sat next to him. My own hands coming up to rub my face. I didn’t know what to do here and he wasn’t helping me figure out where to start.
“Harry, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do here.” I confessed.
Silence.
I wanted to cry, I wish he would say something. Even if it was just to tell me to leave him alone.
“I know.” He spoke so quietly I thought I had imagined it.
When I finally looked over at him he gave me a weak smile and a shrug.
Now it was my turn to stare.
Harry, apparently deciding he didn’t want to be an emotionless mute anymore, threw his arm around my shoulder and kissed the side of my head. “Let’s eat.”
I watched him, still a little confused and not at all satisfied with the way he just pretended that nothing was wrong.
Harry grabbed one of the containers then took a seat at the small table before looking back at me. “Come on Dee. Come have breakfast with me.” When I didn’t budge he added a childish. “Please.”
I got up and joined him at the table. Both of us eating without speaking.
This wasn’t how I pictured this when I was ordering the food. I didn’t want to be sitting here with him pretending everything was okay when I knew something was wrong.
“I wish you would just tell me what is bothering you.” I finally spoke when I couldn’t take the loaded silence anymore.
“It’s nothing.” He answered simply.
“Obviously it is something Harry.” I pushed a piece of syrup covered pancake around my plate for a moment before looking up at him. He wasn’t looking at me, just silently chewing while looking at his plate. “Is it the whole Cameron thing because I thought we-”
“YES! Okay?” He had dropped his fork. His head tilted down but his eyes on me. Finally I get a reaction out of him, but I had to admit it wasn‘t exactly what I was expecting. “It is Cameron.”
I didn’t know what to say, which is probably why my mouth opened and closed a few times making me look like a goldfish. “We talked about that Harry.” I finally managed to whisper out.
“Yes well, that was before I walked into my dressing room to find his hands all over my best friend.”
“Harry...”
“What Dawn? What are you going to say? That you’re sorry. It’s quite a bit late for that. I can’t seem to get the image out of my head now.”
I looked down at my hands that had taken up residence on my lap. I hadn’t thought it would affect him so much. Sure I figured he was a little stunned to see us practically making out without me even telling him we had kissed to begin with, but he seemed really torn up about it. I was so freaking confused.
“Do you not want me to see him anymore?” I finally said, speaking as softly as I could so he wouldn’t hear how sad the idea of giving Cameron up made me. I would do anything for Harry, even if it killed me.
“What?” Now he looked like a damn fish. His eyes widened and jaw dropped open.
“Do you want me to stop hanging out with Cameron, Harry. Because I will. You are... THE most important person in my life Harry. You are my best friend and I would do anything for you, so if me seeing Cameron bothers you so much, I’ll stop.”
For the longest time we sat just staring at each other. I had to swallow the lump in my throat a few times.
Finally Harry looked away, his eyes looking a little glassier then normal. “Are you happy?”
“What?” I wasn’t sure I had heard him.
“Are you happy? Does Cameron make you happy?” He asked speaking quickly.
I thought about it. Really thought about it. Cameron was so great and I could honestly see myself with him. He made things easy, he made me feel special and he made me laugh. But I didn’t want Harry to be upset.
“Harry I-”
“Honesty Dawn.”
Sighing, I nodded. “Yes.”
Harry didn’t say anything at first, he didn’t even move. Just watched me. “I don‘t want you to stop talking to Cameron. I‘m okay with it.”
“Okay?” I asked incredulously.
“Yes okay.” His adam’s apple bobbed a few times before his already deep voice lowered even more. “I don’t want to lose you. I just want you to be happy, Dawn.”
“You’re not going to lose me Harry.”
When his eyes finally shifted from where he was staring at my nose to actually lock with mine, I almost wanted to cry with all the emotions I saw swimming in his eyes. There were so many and I couldn’t really place them all but I knew he meant what he was saying, just like I meant what I was saying.
Getting out of my seat I grabbed onto his arm, pulling on it so he would stand., when he complied I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him as tightly as I could. Harry hesitated a moment before his arms slowly wrapped around my waist. As he squeezed me back I felt his face press into my neck and his warm breath fan out across my collar bone.
“I love you Dawn.”
I felt his lips move as he spoke the words and it sent a strange tingle through my body.
“I love you too, Curly.”
Before anything else was said we both heard a throat clear, causing us to pull apart to find Louis eyeing us.
“Alright, Harry?” Louis asked, but he wasn’t looking at Harry when he spoke. No his eyes were on me.
“Yea. We were just having breakfast.” Harry informed taking his seat again and leaving me standing, still locked in a stare down with Louis.
“Haz I’m going to speak to Dawn for a moment. We’ll be back.”
“Louis.” Harry warned. All Lou did was wave him off as he ushered me to the door.
Once we were outside the room I turned to him waiting to find out why he had me leave in the first place.
“Not here.” He sounded a little less pleasant then he did in the room.
I, again, followed him down the hall towards his own room, gagging a little when we stepped into it. If I wasn’t so nervous about the looks he was giving me I would have joked about what a pig he was.
“You need to stop what you are doing.” Louis said, cutting to the chase before the door to his room fully closed.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Messing with Harry’s feelings.” Louis shouted back at me.
“I’m not doing that.” I defended. My head was starting to hurt from how confused these boys were making me.
“For a smart girl, you really are dumb.” Louis walked past me farther into the room, leaving me looking like an idiot while I tried to decipher his words.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I said when I finally followed him into the room.
“You really can’t tell?”
“Tell what?”
Louis stared at me, almost begging me to understand what he was saying with his eyes. I was still just as lost as before. With a sigh his hands ran through his hair. “I can’t tell you.”
“What the hell Louis?”
“I can’t tell you Dawn, I’m sorry.”
I was past confused at this point, now I was just really pissed. “You know I would really like it if you would stop fucking talking in riddles to me and tell me what the hell is going on. I know you think I should just know but I can assure you, even I can’t read minds.”
“If you really wanted to know, you would. It’s not like it’s very well hidden anyway.”
Again with the cryptic speak. “You know what Louis, I’m done talking to you. You went in there and dragged me away when we were working shit out just to talk to me in code. When you, or anyone else for that matter, decides to tell me in actual spoken words what is going on you know where to find me.”
“You think that was working anything out?” Louis shot back as I began to leave the room. “Dawn, that wasn’t working anything out, you should have seen his face last night when-”
“If you are referring to the whole issue Harry had with Cameron, he said he’s okay with it.” Louis scoffed but I cut him off before he could speak. “I told him I would stop talking to Cameron and he said that he didn’t want me to do that. He said he was okay with it.”
Now it was Louis’ turn to look confused. Good. I was sick of being the only one.
“He said that?”
“Yes.” I emphasized my words by opening my eyes as wide as they would go, nodding.
“You told him that you would stop seeing Cameron, for him, and he told you to keep seeing Cameron?” He reiterated.
I was beginning to think Louis thought I was stupid. “Yes!”
Louis looked me over for a second, before looking away and shaking his head. “Bloody idiot.” I heard him mumble under his breath.
“Can I go now, or do you want to yell at me some more?” I was being snippy but I felt I was justified.
Louis sighed before turning back to me and grabbing me into a hug. “I’m really sorry for yelling at you Dawn.” He apologized. For a moment I was tempted not to except it. I didn’t particularly like that I still had no earthly idea what was going on, but then I realized it was Louis and if he wasn’t telling me, it must be for a very good reason. Louis never kept things from me, just like Harry never kept things from me.
“It’s alright. Just don’t ever fucking yell at me like that again or I will drop kick your ass.”
That’s a lie. I had a slight inkling why and his name was Cameron, but I thought I had already talked to Harry about it. I thought he understood that he was still important to me.
