The Mess We Became

Sushi

I knew I was being exceptionally cranky but all I wanted was my bed and sleep. As soon as the crazies left my room I crashed, literally. I don’t think my head even hit the pillow before I was out.

I would like to say I blame Harry, and I probably will say I blame him, but really I should have known I wasn’t going to last through the whole movie.

And then there was the matter of me having ditched Cameron. I felt terrible about that. It was probably why as soon as I woke up from my nap I reached for my phone and began to text him my apology.

I kind of expected him to be standoffish after blowing him off but I was pleasantly surprised when, instead of a text, my phone began to ring.

I smiled when the picture of him making a silly face, a picture I had taken on our first night here, flashed back at me.

“I am so sorry.” Was my greeting to him.

I heard his chuckle on the other end. “No worries. Honestly.”

I sighed at the way his voice put my mind at ease. “I will definitely have to make it up to you.”

“Well you can do that by going to lunch with me. Michael and Zach left already. Dillon is doing... something and Brent is passed out so I’m all by myself. I would definitely love the company of a beautiful girl.”

“I can go find you one.” I joked as I began to sit up out of my comfortably mountain of blankets.

“Ha ha. You know who I meant.” He responded. I loved that I could hear the smile in his voice as he spoke to me. Cameron was just a generally happy person.

“I do.” I spoke softly, trying to hide my awkwardness at being complemented by this cute boy. “Thank you.”

“I only speak the truth.” He said seriously. “So are you down for some food?”

“Always. Just give me ten to get ready.”

“Alright. See you in a few.”

I said goodbye and hung up while jumping out of bed. I rushed around the room, opening up suit cases and digging through them. There was no way I was going anywhere with Cam looking the way I did. I looked up into the mirror again just to remind myself how horrible I looked.

My hair was a matted mess, my face had the imprints of the bed sheets and my sweats and tee, besides the obvious fact of not being very ‘cute boy’ appropriate, were wrinkled.

In all likelihood I would be wearing whatever I picked out tonight at the show so it needed to be comfortable enough that I would be able to work in but still cute enough for lunch with Cameron. I finally just decided on some denim shorts and my ‘Wild Thing’ tank, grabbing my brown motorcycle boots and pulling my now brushed out hair into a messy bun.

Not a second after I clasped my hoop earrings in did I hear a knock at the door. Checking once more for a final evaluation, I smiled at my self and hopped giddily to the door.

I never understood when books or movies said that the girl swooned, until that moment. Cameron was casually leaning against the door frame, his bright eyes crinkled do to the giant smile on his face. It was contagious and I’m pretty sure I just swooned for the very first time.

“Hey Cam. Just let me grab my bag and we can head out.”

He nodded and pushed off the wall. When I returned he grabbed me into a hug.

“You look great.”

“Thanks.” I blushed, looking down. I wasn‘t normally such a blusher, but this boy managed to have my cheeks continually flushed. “So where to?”

“How do you feel about sushi?” He asked nervously clasping his hands together and turning so he was walking sideways while looking at me, waiting for an answer.

I looked at him from the corner of my eye for a few feet, wanting to make him as nervous as he was making me, before answering. “Sounds good.”

If possible he smiled even bigger. “Awesome.”

And so we went.

He took me to some nice little sushi bar and we geeked out about our mutual love of any thing Harry Potter. Trust me we had a lot to say.

By the time we were walking back into the hotel we were discussing the disappointment that we felt when the Marauders were down played in the movies.

“James Potter and Sirius Black had swag for sure.” Cameron concluded.

I giggled and shook my head at him, pushing the button for the elevator. “I can not believe you just used the word swag like that. So lame.”

“Hey now. That’s not nice.” He said in a mock hurt voice while poking my side.

I giggled and went to smack his shoulder but he caught my hand in his instead. We looked at each other for a moment before he lowered our hands and intertwined our fingers.

I felt my stomach flip at the act but tried to play it cool as we walked into the elevator still hand in hand. I peeked at him through my lashes to find him looking intently at our joined hands.

“Dawn I...” He stopped to bite his lip, keeping his eyes on our hands. “I really like you Dawn. I’m kind of really bad at this stuff, and right now I’m really glad Michael and Zach aren’t around to annoy me with the fact that I am so awk-”

I had effectively shut up his rambling by sliding my free hand behind his neck and pulling him down into our first kiss.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me just say that kissing Cameron Quiseng was everything any girl would image it to be. His full lips were warm and soft as they firmly planted themselves against mine in a closed mouth kiss.

When he pulled away I almost laughed at the look of shock on his face, but I was too scared I was being rejected. I didn’t really have to worry though. After a second of his eyes sweeping my face he leaned back down, molding his lips to mine and slipping his hands around my waist to pull me tight against his body.

Out of pure instinct my mouth opened and Cameron wasted no time taking up my invitation.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I heard the door to the elevator open but I couldn’t bring myself to care. Cameron’s hands had just slipped under the hem of my tank and his thumbs were rubbing circled on the skin of my lower back while his tongue was doing mind numbing things to me.

We only heard the sound of a throat being cleared as we pulled apart, the need for air finally winning out.

My eyes shot to the side, slightly embarrassed at being caught. They landed on a girl that looked about my age with long curly brown hair and an amused smile plastered on her face.

I turned my face into Cameron’s chest hopping it would calm the flush I knew had taken over my cheeks.

“You must be Dawn.” The girl spoke in an odd accent, not quite Australian but not British or American either. It was unique. “I was told to look out for the red hair.”

It took a second for my mind to connect the dots. “Jeneane?”

She smiled brightly at me while holding her hand out to me. “You can call me Jena.”

I slowly placed my hand in hers, still fully embarrassed for her first impression of me being some horny chick in an elevator making out with her... friend.

“It’s really great to finally meet you.” I said pulling away from Cameron and taking a step towards her.

Cameron followed me out of the elevator and stood rather close behind me while reaching his own hand out to the girl. “Hi, I’m Cameron.”

“You certainly are.” She grinned looking from him to me and giving me a wink.

“Anyway,” I clapped my hands together, wanting nothing more then to get out of this awkward situation. “It’s getting closer to show time. The boys will be at the arena at 4pm. We should probably start making our way there, Jena. That way I can introduce you to the crew and help you get comfortable with everything because we wont really have time for that tonight.”

She nodded and waited for me while I turned back to Cameron. “You should probably start heading out too. I’ll see you tonight?”

He smiled softly at me pushing a few strands of my hair that had fallen out of my bun behind my ear and kissing my cheek. “Yea. I’ll see you later. Maybe we can make up for you ditching me last night.” He joked.

I rolled my eyes but smiled anyway. As soon as he was back on the elevator on his way to his own floor I turned back to my new assistant who was just smiling at me with her head tilted to the side.

“You and your boyfriend are cute.”

I blushed and began to walk towards my room to grab my Spiderman rolling case. Most of my supplies were already at the venue but my favorite’s, and the boys favorites, where hidden in that case.

“He’s not my boyfriend.” I said with a nervous giggle.

“Could have fooled me.”

I really had nothing to say to that. It would be a lie if I said that I wouldn’t like for Cameron to be my boyfriend. Even though we have only been in the same place for an accumulated 4 days we had been talking to each other for steady 3 mouths, what happened today was a lot of tension that had to be released from all our flirting.

Jena and I managed to hitch a ride with a few other crew members. the Staple Center was already swarming with girls clad in homemade shirts and One Direction merchandise. A few waved to me from behind the barricades as I stepped out of the van. One thing about One Direction fans, they were very dedicated, meaning they knew everyone associated with the boys including little ol’ me. It probably helped that I had been featured in an impromptu Twitcam by Liam one night as I was fixing his hair.

“They know who you are?” Jena asked sending me a questioning look as I waved. If we hadn’t already been running late I would have gone over to talk to them. I always enjoyed chatting with the fans, they were funny and always had amazing things for me to say to the boys. One time a girl told me that she wanted to be the mistress in the Niam relationship. Needless to say I teased the shit out of Niall and Liam with that that along with offering to take all the carrots I could hold and pelting mister Tomlinson when ever I could. Have I mentioned I love my job?

“Yea. They know all our names.” I said still smiling and waving to the girls as we made our way inside, flashing our freshly printed credentials and a smile to the guard at the door.

As soon as the doors closed behind us, effectively cutting off the shouts from the fans outside, we were greeted by a very frazzled dark skinned woman.

“Caroline, met Jena. Jena, this is Caroline. She’s the boys stylist.” Caroline waved hastily at Jena and then turned to me with a pleading look.

“It’s all wrong. It’s a disaster. There is no way we are going to be able to get those boys in and out of that hell hole in less the ten minutes. It’s just not happening.”

The whole time she spoke she was waving her hands around wildly. Jena looked at me in a nervous way while I just stared wide eyed at Caroline.

“Caroline... hold up.” She paused in her minI melt down, looking at me with wide eyes. “Take a breath.”

She did.

“Now let’s all go over there and set it up properly. There are three of us here now we can get it all under control before the show.” I said speaking evenly, in a soothing tone. Caroline in a panic was no good for anyone, least of all me, who had to share the small space with her through the duration of the night.

As my words sunk in I could see Caroline visibly relax. After bringing her breathing under control again she finally smiled a real smile at us. “Sorry. It’s just been a while since we were on tour. This crew doesn’t know what they are doing. I miss the crew from the UK tour.”

I chuckled as we began to make our way to the small room located just off the stage. It was where the boys would be doing their wardrobe changes during the show and because of the time restraints it had to be set up just right so everything could move smoothly and they could change, get hair and makeup touch ups and be back on stage within ten minutes. One boy was difficult enough, five required skill, talent, practice, and a hell of a lot of patience.

We set to work organizing everything Jena falling into the groove of things rather easily. She almost instinctually knew were I or Caroline would want things. It seemed like only minutes later, but was actually a few hours later, we could hear the loud shouting and the sounds of boys wrestling just outside.

I stuck my head out of the black curtains separating the quick change from the small walkway leading to the stage.

“Hey knock it off out here.” I managed to shout over them, smiling when they all turned to me.

Louis ran right up to me pulling me completely out of the curtains and wrapping me into a tight hug where he began to rock me back and forth. “How are you, you lovely, lovely woman, you? I’ve missed you all day.”

I pulled away giving him a completely weird look. He was creeping me out. “What the hell is up with you?”

“Nothing at all. I just want to make sure you’re in a good mood.” He replied quickly. Too quickly.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Why?” I asked slowly.

“I just want you to be in a happy state so you don’t take it out on my head again.” He pouted pointing meekly to his hair.

I giggled throwing my arms around his neck and squeezing him in a hug. “I’m sorry Louis. I didn’t mean to go psycho bitch on you this morning. I didn’t get much sleep last night. Blame it on Harry.” I shot a look over my shoulder to the curly haired boy with a smirk.

“What?” Harry asked sounding baffled by my statement.

Louis just wiggled his eyebrows at me suggestively.

“Not like that Lou.” I said slapping his arm. He was such a pervert. Strangely I thought I heard him mumble something that sounded like ‘not yet.’

“You are so strange.” I pulled away from him to jump onto Niall’s back as he walked past us munching on some chips.

“Que pasa mi amor?” I whispered in his ear causing him to laugh out loud.

“Dee you’re turning me on.” He joked in a seductive voice.

I dropped off his back giggling.

“You’re in a better mood.” Niall pointed out.

I shrugged looking around at all the boys who were watching me. “I had a good afternoon.” I said, vividly recalling my kiss with Cameron.

“Did you now?” Harry smiled at me. I nodded. “I’m glad to hear it.”

“Yea, which reminds me, you and I have to talk later.”

I almost missed the looks Niall, Louis, Zayn, and Liam shot at him, almost.

“What was that?”

“What was what?” Harry played dumb, but by the look on his face I knew he knew what I was talking about.

I eyed him suspiciously trying to decide weather or not it was worth beating it out of him.

“Oh hello.” He suddenly spoke dragging his eyes away from mine to look over my shoulder. He looked much too pleased with the distraction.

I glanced behind me to find that Jena had stepped out of the quick change.

“Hi.” She waved shyly. Glancing at Harry, then the others and then down at the ground.

“Boys this is Jena, my new best friend.” I said pulling her forward into a side hug. She giggled and rolled her eyes at me. Oh yes she was going to fit in for sure.

“Well hello replacement.” Harry held his hand out, offering her his most charming smile.

Jena placed her hand in his and was quickly pulled away from me into a hug by him. “We hug around here.” He informed. She was greeted in much the same way by the other boys as they began to ask her a million and one questions.

Harry edged his way out of the group and over to me.

“What did you need to tell me?” He asked smirking at me while bumping his shoulder into mine.

“Oh.“ I looked away from were Jena was talking excitedly with Niall to look at him. “You will never guess what happened to me today?”

Harry looked at me expectantly the smile growing on his face.

“Well... I k-”

“BOYS!” Everyone jumped at the sound of the word spoken through a bull horn. All eyes snapped at the tour director. “Sound check.”

It was the actual sound check, not the VIP sound check party, so everyone knew it meant that their serious pants needed to be pulled on.

Everyone of the boys nodded and began to make their way onto the stage only stopping to grab their mic packs and in-ears that were laying labeled on a small table.

As Harry adjusted his pack he looked over at me with an apologetic look and mouthed the word ‘later’. I nodded showing him I understood before turning around to look at Jena.

“They are so funny.” She gushed.

“Yea I know. Don’t let them give you any crap though. Come on. Now that the quick change is set up we need to get the actual dressing room ready for them when they are done.”
