The Mess We Became
Star Map
“Where are we off to next?” Harry asked as we sat on a bench somewhere along the Walk of Fame eating the ice cream I had to practically beg like a child for.
I took a large bite and nodded towards the folded map in his lap, speaking with a mouth full of the chocolaty goodness. “Does that thing say were Justin Timberlake lives? Cause I’d really like to see that.”
Harry rolled his eyes at me before wiggling his eyebrows and smiling suggestively. “How about we go to the Playboy mansion.”
“Oh yea, cause that’s what I want to do, follow you around while you try to talk your way into Hugh Hefner’s place and horn dog all the porn stars. I think your head might explode from the rush of hormones if we did that.”
“What about your hormones? As if you wouldn’t be all over Justin Timberlake if we ran into him.” He countered with a chuckle. “Besides could you see the tabloids now, Harry Styles stalks Justin Timberlake at his home with crazy midget girl.”
“Hey.” I narrowed my eyes at him and pointed a finger in his face. “I am not a midget.”
Harry looked at me for a moment then down at my still pointing finger causing his eyes to cross adorable before he lean forward and bit it.
My mouth dropped open and I yanked my finger away. “No you did not just bit me.”
“I believe I did. What are you going to do about it?” He replied smugly taking a bite of his own ice cream.
I looked from him, to my finger, then back to him. Retaliation on my mind when I finally lend forward and took a huge bite from his cone. I then proceeded to smile smugly while I chewed.
“That was just rude.” He said calmly shaking his head at me like I was a little kid misbehaving. I had to hold my hand over my mouth to keep from spiting out the ice cream as I laughed at the look on his face.
“Anyway.” I said swallowing. “I think we should go on one of those celebrity homes tours.” My eyes scanned the busy street in front of us, examining all the little booths boasting the best tours in Hollywood. “Ooh look the TMZ tour. That should be fun.”
Harry turned his unamused eyes at me. “You do realize that I am a celebrity right?”
“Someone’s got a big head today.” I joked rolling my eyes before standing up and reaching for his hand. “Come on lets go see which one is next and go on it.”
We spent the day much like that, me dragging Harry along on all the most ridiculous touristy things we could do and him pretending not to like it.
Surprisingly, Harry went mostly unnoticed, with the exception of a handful of very nice girls. Probably because I had helped him tuck all his famous curls into a baseball cap, hid his face behind sunglasses, and had him use his fake American accent, that he was getting pretty good at by the way, most of the day. That and most people wouldn’t assume Harry Styles would actually be on a Hollywood star tour.
It was pretty late in the afternoon when we finally decided to head back to our hotel. The boys officially began touring tomorrow and I had an early wake up call to get all their pretty little heads ready for the news station appearance at the butt crack of dawn.
“We never saw Justin’s house.” I whined as we tiredly walked towards the elevator.
“We never went into the Playboy mansion.” Harry countered, since we had actually seen the playboy mansion on the tour I had managed to get him to go on.
I stuck my tongue out at him. “You are such a perv.”
The doors to the elevator finally opened and we both stepped in leaning on the wall on opposite sides of the small space so we could stare at each other.
“You excited for tomorrow?” I asked rolling my head from side to side.
Harry’s eyebrows raised as his eyes dropped down to the floor. “Not so much about waking up so early, but I am excited for the show tomorrow night.”
I nodded. Harry was about as much of a morning person as I was, which was not at all. Unfortunately tour life meant getting up very early, sometimes with very little sleep the night before. You get really good at being able to sleep anywhere when you live on the road.
I was about to say something else when my phone, which had been silent for most of the day, vibrated in my pocket. I slipped it out, catching Harry eyeing me from the other side of the elevator as I did so.
Where r u sunshine? We just checked in and im on ur floor but u r not here
I squealed at the thought of the cute boy upstairs waiting for me. I turned my eyes up to Harry who was slouched against the wall and giggled happily. “Cameron is here.”
“Oh yay.” He deadpanned.
My smile fell as I tilted my head to the side. “What’s wrong with you?”
Harry’s hands reached up to rub his face and a sigh escaped his lips, when his hands dropped down again he had plastered on a very forced looking smile. “Nothing at all.”
I still narrowed my eyes at him, not buying it for on second. He had been weird ever since we got to the states. One minute he’d be fine then the next minute he’d be all moody. “Are you sure?”
The doors slid open and Harry pushed off the wall. “Yeah.”
As I followed him out I spotted the boys from Allstar Weekend chatting with Zayn and Liam at the far end of the hall. As soon as Cameron’s eyes found mine he was striding towards me.
To be completely honest I had kind of missed him. We had a pretty good time the night before. He took me to In and Out, something I had missed since the last time a tour had brought me to the west coast of the US, and then to get some frozen yogurt. It was easy to talk to Cameron. We were both into the same things, obsessed with reading, and had similar humor. He made me laugh and he was so damn cute. The more time I spent with him the more time I wanted to spend with him.
“Hey you.” I giggled out as he wrapped his arms around my waist and rocked me slightly in one of his famous hugs. Oh yes, Cameron Quiseng was a hugger and I was certainly not complaining at all. Hello toned arms wrapped around my body.
“I missed you.” He said as he let me go.
I slapped his shoulder, feeling a blush spread over my cheeks. “You saw me yesterday.”
“Yeah well.” He waved off turning slightly to see Harry who had a rather bitter look on his face. “Hey man, nice to see you again.” Cameron said politely.
Harry’s eyes subtly looked from me to Cameron and back again before he took Cameron’s offered hand and managed a small smile. He was really starting to worry me with his mood swings.
“Erm, yeah you too.” Harry said slipping his hands into his pockets and shuffling his feet. “I’m going to bed then.” He looked me dead in the eye for a minute before flashing me a small half smile and turning away.
I watched him walk towards his room, not even stopping to talk to Zayn and Liam as he passed them.
He was acting so strange. I wish he would just tell me what was wrong so I could try to fix it. I missed my happy, silly friend and this gloomy version of him was really starting to wear thin on my nerves.
“You alright?” Cam asked, slouching a bit to be at eye level with me.
My eyes tore from the path Harry had just taken, back to him. I hadn’t realized I was frowning until I felt my lips tug up at the corner when I saw the adorable look of worry on Cameron’s face.
“Yea I’m good. I’m just worried about him.” I said nodding towards Harry’s suite door.
Cameron looked over his shoulder to where I nodded then back at me. “Do you want to go talk to him? See if he’s alright?”
My eyes snapped up to meet his green ones. “You wouldn’t mind? I know you’ve been waiting for me to get back for awhile.”
Cameron flashed me his lopsided grin that made me want to melt. “Naw it’s cool. Go take care of your friend. I know he means a lot to you. We can always hang out later.”
I smiled gratefully at him and before I could think about what I was doing I stood on my tip toes and kissed his cheek. My own cheeks instantly heated up again as I awkwardly pulled away. He looked just as stunned as I did but covered it with a grin. I didn’t miss the slight tint to his cheeks either.
“Thank you Cam. I’ll call you later.” He nodded as I waved and began to walk towards Harry’s suite.
I peeked over my shoulder just as I reached the door. Cameron was still watching me and it only made my already blushing cheeks flush more.
Taking a deep breath to ready myself for dealing with Harry, I lifted my hand and knocked.
“Lou I really don’t want to...” Harry began to say as he swung the door open. He looked a little startled to see me there as his mouth snapped shut while his eyes took me in before drifting over my shoulder and back again. “I thought you were Louis.”
“I gathered.” I said with a nod.
“What are you doing here?” His question made my eyebrows furrow. It wasn’t so much the question as it was the way he said it. Like I should be somewhere else.
“I can leave if you don’t want me around Harry.” I began to back away knowing he wouldn’t let me get far. If anything, I knew that Harry fell for my guilt trips all the time.
“No, it’s ok. I just thought you would want to be with Cameron.” His voice kind of faltered as he finished that sentence.
It right then when it finally hit me what was wrong with him, why he had been acting the way he had.
He was jealous.
I grabbed onto his hand had pushed past him, into his room, dragging him along with me. I waited until I heard the door click shut before pushing him onto the bed in front of me. I stood over him looking down into his slightly shocked face while I placed my hands on his knees and leaned my face close to his.
His Adam's apple bobbed while his hands rubbed nervously on his denim clad thighs.
I narrowed my eyes at him before speaking. “What the hell is wrong with you Styles?”
By the look on Harry’s face I could tell that was not what he thought I was going to say. He looked a little lost. He took a second to squeeze his eyes shut and pursed his lips before opening them again to look at me.
“What?”
“Are you jealous of Cameron?”
Now he really looked like a deer caught in headlights. “Wha-what?”
I softened my voice as I took a seat in the spot next to him. Harry turned his head slightly to look at me with the startled look still on his face.
“Harry, you’re my best friend. Nobody is going to change that. Just cause I like Cameron, doesn’t mean I’m going to up and forget about you.” I tried to reason.
Harry turned his face away from me, his eyes focusing on something just in front of him as he thought my words over.
I watched him, hoping he would understand that just because I was talking to Cameron it didn’t mean I wasn’t going to spend time with him. We had a whole lot of trouble to cause together on this tour and I didn’t want him to think I was forgetting about him.
What felt like forever later Harry finally looked back at me but still didn’t say anything. There was a very intense look in his eyes as they swept over my face. It was kind of unnerving really. Somewhere in the pit of my stomach I felt a jolt but choose to ignore it as I stared right back at him.
“You promise that nothing will change?” It was strange but it almost sounded like he wanted me to say things would change.
“Of course Haz. Nothing is going to change between you and I.”
He swallowed and looked down, nodding slowly. “Okay.”
Somehow he looked worse now then when I first came in. “Harry...”
My tone must have been one of worry because he quickly looked up at me flashing me a smile. “I’m fine Dee.”
I raised my eyebrows in question only to make him chuckle softly at me. “I promise. I’m fine.” He draped his arm over my shoulder and tugged me into his side. “So do you want to cash in that rain check for a movie night now.” He said changing the subject and lightening the mood that had settled over us.
Instantly my worried frown faded and a smile replaced it. “Only if I get to pick the movie.”
Harry ground as I dove across the bed reaching for the remote. I managed to crawl across the bed until I could sit with my back resting against the plush headboard as I channel surfed looking for something to watch.
Harry shook his head as he got up from the foot of the bed where we had been sitting and walked over to the light switch to turn off the bright lights of the room. As soon as he had done that he made his way over to the bed to take the spot next to me.
Finally finding something to watch just as he made himself comfortable. I threw my left leg over his right one and leaned my shoulder against his while pointing to the tv with the remote.
“Sweet Home Alabama again?” Harry whined. It was my very favorite movie and Harry had watched it at least a few hundred times with me.
“How lucky are we that it just started?” I gushed happily. Harry only groaned but he couldn’t hide the smile on his face. He knew how much I adored this move and I knew he would let me watch it as many times as I wanted.
“You’re lucky you’re cute.”
“Har har har. You’re lucky I’m scared of your fans killing me.”
He smiled smugly at me while slinging his arm around my shoulder and pulling me close to his side. We watched the movie in silence for the most part, the only noise being me reciting certain lines and Harry laughing at me.
“Hey Harry.” I finally managed to say, we had been watching the movie for a while. “You really are my best friend and I love you.” I thought I should reiterate that. Now that I knew he was feeling insecure in our friendship with Cameron around. I was planning on letting him know just how important he was to me.
There was silence for a long time. I would have thought he had fallen asleep if it hadn’t been for his arm tightening around me and his cheek resting on the top of my head as I finished speaking.
“I love you too.”
I took a large bite and nodded towards the folded map in his lap, speaking with a mouth full of the chocolaty goodness. “Does that thing say were Justin Timberlake lives? Cause I’d really like to see that.”
