The Mess We Became

Argument

I loved the traveling. Especially when we were going back to my home country. My mother was ecstatic to see me and ‘her boys’ as she liked to call them. When we traveled there last year she had taken to them and they had developed a habit of calling her Mama G.

We still wouldn’t be anywhere near her for a few weeks but she was currently sending me texts telling me how excited she was as I sat near customs waiting to check our luggage in.

In the middle of my mothers marathon texting I received another text that instantly brought a smile to my face.

Hey Sunshine! Cant wait 2 c u when u land in LA If ur not 2 tired we should hang out

My fingers flew over the screen as I sent Cameron a reply. Ever since meeting him and his band a little over two month ago we had been in constant contact. They weren’t opening for One Direction on the UK leg of the tour so I hadn’t seen them since the day we met, even though I had been invited to their show the same night. Harry had insisted I go to the movies with him and Zayn and I didn’t want to hear him whine so I declined Cameron’s offer, sadly.

“What are you doing?” Harry’s deep voice pulled me out of my Cameron induced haze. I knew I had a stupid smile on my face I just couldn’t bring myself to care.

“Texting.” I answered before looking down as my phone vibrated in my hands. My smile widening at the response.

Harry leaned over my shoulder, a feat that wasn’t to hard for him seeing as I was a little height challenged at only 5’2”.

“Who’s Cameron?”

I chuckled. Leave it to Harry not to remember anyone's name. “He’s in the band that’s opening for you guys.”

From the corner of my eyes I saw Harry frown and pull away. “I didn’t know you were talking to him.”

“Yea. We’ve been talking for a while now. Since we met actually. He’s really funny and sweet.” I gushed. Even to my own ears I sounded like a preteen with a crush.

“Oh.” That was all he said. It was odd Harry normally had plenty to say. I turned my head to look at him trying to decide if he was sick or something.

He just looked down at the ground, hands buried in his pockets, shoulders hunched up and a deep frown on his face. Odd.

“Are you alright?”

He quickly snapped his head up to look at me, a blank look taking over his frown. “Yea, I’m grand. I think we can start checking in now.” And he walked away.

I watched him reach for his bags that weren’t on one of the many luggage carts and walk farther into the airport leaving me standing there.

“Are you planning on apperating to America?” Louis asked placing his hand on my shoulder.

“I wish I was a witch. I’d definitely be hanging out with cooler people.” I joked grabbing my backpack off the floor and swinging it onto the opposite shoulder.

“How’s El?” I asked Louis as he looked back at his girlfriend who was quickly making her way out of the crowded airport. It was easy to see how hard walking away was for Louis.

“We hate this part. I love touring and seeing the fans around the world but I hate leaving her. We‘re trying the band aid approach today.” He said nodding towards her retreating back just as she stepped through the doors. I knew them well enough to know their goodbyes had been said last night and likely this morning as well.

“Understandable, but she’ll be joining us in a few weeks so it’s not so bad.”

“It’ll be the longest few weeks ever.”

I slapped his abs and laughed as he fake winced. “It’ll fly by and you know it.”

We both placed our carry-ons on the coverer at the security check point. I looked over to where Harry was grumpily slouching through the metal detector a few feet away.

“Do you know what's up with curly?” I asked nodding in his direction for Louis to look.

“Not a clue. Did you say something to him?”

“Why would you automatically assume I did something to him?”

Louis flashed me a smile then nodded to the lady as he grabbed not only his bag but my backpack as well and began to lead me to our terminal. “Because you two know how to push each others buttons.”

I had to agree with him there. Harry’s and my friendship was based on a mutual love for annoying the crap out of each other most of the time.

“However true that may be, this time I did absolutely nothing to him. He’s just being moody.”

“He’ll get over it then.” Louis shrugged.

Soon we were all through security and seated in our first class seats. I was adjusting my seatbelt just as Harry, still in his funky mood, dropped down into the seat next to me. I watched him as he threw his bag under the seat in front, slid the seat belt over his hips and leaned his head back shutting his eyes. He didn’t even look at me.

I was just about to say something to him when my cell phone, which I had yet to turn off, vibrated on the tray table I had pulled down until we were ready to take off.

“Can you tell you’re boyfriend we’ll be in LA in about 12 hours? He can talk to you then. I think you can wait that long to talk to him.”

My eyes widened at the sudden snarky out burst. Harry rarely raised his voice at me. Sure we play fight all the time and we argue about stupid stuff but his tone just now was full of anger and it was directed at me.

Slowly I reached for my phone while unfastening my seatbelt with the other hand. I then reached for my backpack tucked away in front of me and began to slid out of our row.

“Where are you going?” He asked eyeing me up and down as I stepped out into the walkway.

“To sit somewhere else.”

Harry’s eyebrows furrowed at my words. “Why?”

“Because you’re crazy if you think I’m about to sit next to you for 12 hours in the mood you’re in. I’m sorry you’re in a bad mood but you have no right to take it out on me.” I started to turn away when I felt I had something else to add to what I said, something I hoped would make him feel shitty for snapping at me. I held my phone up for him to read the name across the screen. “It was my mom by the way and Cameron, who I assumed you were talking about, isn‘t my boyfriend.”

I ignored him as he called out to me, walking a few rows ahead to where I knew Louis and Zayn were seated.

“Hey Zayn, you mind switching with me?”

Both boys sent me a funny look. “Really? Weren’t you with Harry?” He asked looking back the few rows to were Harry now had his hands over his face. I was pissed and Harry knew better then to push me right now, so he didn’t get up and follow me.

“I just want to catch up with Louis. I haven’t seen him in a while.”

I knew neither of them bought that. As much time as Harry spent at my place I spent a decent amount of time at theirs.

Zayn looked from me to Louis who was eyeing me. “Um sure Dee.” He snatched his bag up and slipped by me taking my previous seat near Harry. As Zayn sat down Harry’s now sad eyes locked on mine. We stared each other down for a moment before I shook my head and slid into Zayn’s seat.

“Why did you really switch?” Louis asked still eyeing me.

I smiled sweetly at him as I buckled my seat belt. “Because you’re my favorite.”

“You say that to everyone.” He replied.

“Not true. I never tell Harry he’s my favorite.”

Louis chuckled. “That’s because we all know he actually is your favorite.”

“Not right now he’s not.” I reviled.

Louis’s eyebrow shot up. “Oh really?”

“He snapped at me Lou. I can’t sit next to him for 12 hours when he's in that mood, I’d rather just watch movies or something on my Mac then deal with his bitchiness.”

Louis stretched to look over the seat. “Well he doesn’t look like he’s in a pleasant mood so I’ll let you stay.”

“Oh well thank you ever so much.” I joked, rolling my eyes. The pilot’s voice announced we were almost ready for take off.

I loved the take off part of flying, Harry hated it. I actually felt kind of bad leaving him with Zayn right then. I normally joked stupidly or prattled on about nonsense until we were up in the air so Harry wouldn’t think about what we were doing.

As soon as we were up in the air, I turned to look at Harry who was still clutching the seat and breathing deeply. My heart tightened at the sight but my pride wouldn’t let me go over to him, not until he apologized.

12 episodes of Criminal Minds later, Louis and I were watching the credits roll with open mouths.

“That was insane. There are some mental people in the world.” Louis said.

“I feel kind of dirty now. That man was sick.”

“How have I never seen that program before?”

“I don’t know, because me and El watch it all the time together.” I said snapping my laptop closed. After that episode I needed a break.

“Eleanor watches that and she hasn’t told me about it?” He asked incredulously.

“Erm... Do you think I can borrow Dawn for a moment.” Harry’s voice sounded from above my head. I looked up into his uncertain eyes as he looked at Louis who looked between the two of us and shrugged.

“Sure mate.” I narrowed my eyes at Louis as I stood up but followed Harry to the small hall the bathrooms were located none the less.

There was an awkward moment of silence while Harry looked down at his feet and I looked at the wall behind his head.

“We don’t fight.” Harry finally spoke. I shifted my eyes to his face locking my hazel eyes on his green ones.

“No, we normally don’t.” I agreed.

“I’m sorry Dee. I’m just... stressed. Once I get into the flow of things again I’ll be alright.”

I nodded, taking my turn to look at my own shoes.

“So we’re okay?” He asked sounding a little desperate.

Dragging my eyes back up to him I smiled softly. “Of course. I don’t like being mad at you Harry but you can’t just snap at me. If something's bothering you, you have to tell me so I can help or at the very least understand why you’re in a mood.”

He stared at me for a long time, almost like he was trying to decide if he should tell me something or not. I just stared right back urging him to say what ever he needed to.

“Alright.” He finally said leaving me with the feeling that he had decided not to say what ever it was that was bothering him.

I sighed but threw my arms around him for a hug anyway. I figured he’d eventually come to me with what was bothering him, he always did.

I couldn’t help but notice that he held me a little longer then normal, squeezed me a little tighter, like he was scared I was going to be stolen. He must have really felt bad about us arguing. So before we pulled away I leaned in and kissed his cheek.

“Um.. so yea. Now that we are okay, Do you think Louis will switch with me? I would like to spend the last hour sat next to my favorite girl, that and I think I have a wet spot from where Zayn has dribbled on my shirt.” He finished off by inspecting the shoulder that would have been Zayn’s make-shift pillow.

I giggled and grabbed his hand pulling him towards were I had been sitting with Louis to find that the little traitor had already taken it upon himself to switch seats with Harry. They weren’t best friends for nothing. Sometimes I wondered if they shared a brain, or had telepathic abilities with each other.

As I looked towards Harry and I’s original seats I caught Louis wink and go back to watching something on my laptop that he had obviously swiped as he made the switch.

Not like I needed it anyway, not now that Harry and I were back to talking.

This was one of the things I liked about our friendship, we never fought but on the rare occasions we did, all it took was a few words and we were back to normal again. Back to talking about absolutely nothing at all and loving every minute of it.
