The Mess We Became
Idiot
It would be a complete lie for me to say my feelings for Harry miraculously vanished as quickly as they seemed to appear.
No, they were definitely still there.
I pretended very well though.
We were back to joking, if not a little strained on my part, but things were slowly getting back to the way they used to be. Neither one of us bringing up our awkward conversation were I told him how I felt. I wasn’t sure if I was happy with that yet.
Sometimes I would find myself on the side of the stage watching him between wardrobe changes. I would pretend that some of the words he sang were for me.
As terrible as it may sound, I would invasion that I was the one Harry was singing to or about when he pleaded for the girl to notice him. Sometimes he would look at me and for a split second it felt so real.
Then the guilt would set in.
I would have to remind myself about Cameron and that Harry had no such feelings for me.
To make up for it, I had taken to sitting on the side of the stage for each and every one of Cameron’s performances with Allstar Weekend. Almost like a silent apology to him for my traitorous thoughts about my best friend.
Don’t get me wrong, watching Cameron made me happy, no doubt, but it wasn’t the same as watching Harry. Watching Cameron, I spent more time feeling bad that I had been thinking about someone else, while watching Harry, he was the only thing on my mind and that made me feel awful.
And for that reason alone did I sit on that side religiously, watching my boyfriend.
The way I saw it, I had to stop these thoughts of Harry and surly watching my sexy boyfriend rock out on stage would eventually remedy those thoughts.
That was what I was telling myself anyway.
Even now as I sat watching Cameron beam at me and mouth the words to the love song Zach was singing, my mind was somewhere else.
I smiled, but not like I did when I pretended with Harry.
“Boo!” A very familiar female voice whispered in my ear.
I flinched and spun around. A smile quickly sprung to my face at the lovely face smiling back at me. “El!” I squealed gleefully, throwing my arms around the taller brunette.
We both giggled happily as we hugged.
“I thought you were flying in tomorrow?” I asked as I pulled away slightly. “Does Lou know you’re here?”
Eleanor shook her head causing her soft curls to fly around. “No. I’m trying to surprise him. I just saw you standing here and couldn’t resist saying hello.”
I grinned and pulled her into another hug. I had missed her dearly.
She patted my back causing me to pull away again. “Actually I have another surprise.”
I stared at her as she looked around the corner and waved someone over.
Again a squeal erupted from my lips as Danielle hopped into my view holding her arms out for me to hug her as well. I quickly jumped at her squeezing her tightly.
“Oh my god. You two have no idea how happy I am to see you both. There is way to much testosterone around here.”
They both giggled at that. Danielle pulling away and looking over my shoulder at the stage where Cameron and the others were still performing. “Is that the boyfriend I’ve heard so much about?” She asked pointing towards Cameron. When I looked at him he winked.
“Um...” I grinned and looked back at the two girls. “Yup that would be the one.”
“He’s cute.” Eleanor concluded as she watched them perform.
“I would introduce you but I’m sure you two are dying to see you’re boys.”
“Actually we were thinking of some way of surprising them. Any ideas that evil little mind of yours could come up with?” Danielle asked wiggling her fingers near my temple.
I chuckled and turned away, thinking about how I could help. I snapped my fingers together and turned back to them.
“I think I might just have an idea. It’s risky and they might not like me too much for keeping you away until then but it’ll be fun to see their faces.”
That was all that I needed to say to have both the girls jump on board with my plan.
Like all the other times the three of us got together we quietly plotted on how to get the upper hand on the boys.
“Alright its all set. Try to stay out of sight until then. It would ruin everything if word got back to them that you were here.”
Just then the noise on the stage behind me got a bit louder and a short time later I had Cameron’s arms securely wrapped around my waist. I forced myself to squash the guilty feelings in my stomach at the subconscious wish for those arms to belong to someone else.
Right now, I had to focus on Eleanor and Danielle and not on my stupid made up love triangle.
“Well hello.” Danielle smirked and waved as Cameron rested his chin on my shoulder.
Eleanor kept her questioning eyes on me. I felt like she was dissecting us.
“Hey.” He greeted stretching his hand out between us towards the two girls. “I’m Cameron.”
“The boyfriend.” Eleanor supplied finally looking over at him. She almost sounded hostile for a split second but she quickly covered it up with her sweet smile and took his hand.
“That would be me.” He said kissing the side of my face affectionately.
Sometimes I wish he could just see right through me, I wish he could see what I was thinking and call me out on it so I wouldn’t feel bad. At least if he got angry at me I would feel like it was something I deserved. This I didn’t deserve. I didn’t deserve a good guy like Cameron.
“You two are adorable together.” Danielle said glancing at Eleanor out of the corner of her eye and then at me.
The look they were both giving me in that moment let me know that as soon as their reunions with their boyfriends were over we would be talking.
What could they have possible seen on my face to warrant that reaction. Was I really that easy to read?
“Anyway, Cam, they’ve got to find some place to hide that the boys won’t find them. It’ll ruin the surprise if they are caught.” I said, pulling my eyes away from the two girls and spinning in Cameron’s arms and resting my hands on his chest. “Any ideas?”
He seriously thought about it for a moment before smiling down at me triumphantly. “They can hang out in our dressing room. I mean, besides Niall, the others don’t make it a habit to drop by before the show. I think they are running late anyway, didn’t they get held up at the radio station today?”
I nodded, I remember hearing something about that. As far as I knew, everything was running a bit behind schedule in One Direction land today so there was little to no chance Niall would be making any kind of appearance in Allstar Weekend’s dressing room tonight.
He looked over my shoulder at Eleanor and Danielle. “So do you two want to hang out with us until you’re epic plan gets set in motion?”
“Sure, I suppose we don’t have much choice anyway.” Danielle looked to Eleanor who shrugged.
I looked up at Cameron and perked my lips up for a kiss which he quickly complied with. “Take care of my girls okay. And tell Mikey they are taken and to keep his swag in check.”
Cameron chuckled and nodded before leading Eleanor and Danielle towards his dressing room.
Not too long after they scurried down the hall ducking around the corner, did I hear the loud noise that always signaled the boys arrival.
“That was insanity out there.” Louis laughed in a hysterical kind of way as he walked up to me in the hall and threw his arm around my shoulders.
“Nice of you boys to show up. Shall we get started? Caroline is waiting for us in the dressing room.” I said forcing my face to remain blank as Louis and Liam looked at me. I didn’t want to give anything away.
I let them all walk by me before following them into the room where Caroline and Jena had been waiting.
The boys literally had 20 minutes before they had to report to the stage crew so we were in a major time crunch. Luckily for everyone the meet and greet for this particular date was scheduled to be after the show.
“What are you up to?” Harry’s deep voice sounded right next to my ear, sending shivers that I was sure he had to have noticed, down my spin.
“Nothing.” Even to me my voice seemed unusually high pitched. Harry could always tell when I was lying.
Damn him.
“Are you sure?” He asked narrowing his eyes at me. We were the only two left in the hall, the others having already entered the dressing room.
I nodded and shoved him into the room. “Yes, now hurry. We don’t want to start a riot by you guys being late.”
“I know you are up to something. You have that look on your face.” He still had his eyes narrowed as he swirled his finger around my face to emphasize whatever look I was giving him.
“Harry Styles please get your butt in motion and stop harassing me.” I hissed again pushing against his rock hard abs.
If I hadn’t been so busy trying to redirect his attention I probably would have drooled a bit. Damn it I needed to stop these thoughts.
Cameron.
Cameron had rock hard abs too. And he could play the bass. And he had a sexy smile and nice hair and...
Harry cleared his throat and smiled slyly at me. I suddenly noticed I was unconsciously petting his chest.
Damn him.
I quickly pulled my hand away from him and glared waving him off. “Go away Harry.”
He chuckled and leaned down to peck my cheek.
It was still a little awkward for me to show the same kind of affection towards Harry that I used to be so comfortable in doing but he refused to let me put a stop to it.
As I followed him into the room I looked around. It was a complete mad house. Liam and Niall stood off to one side changing out of their street clothes into their stage wear, Zayn stood in front of Caroline as she adjusted a few things on his outfit. Louis sat in front of the mirrors with Jena quickly setting to style his hair.
“Where do you want me babes?” Harry asked holding his arms open as he stood before me.
He had no idea how much of a loaded question that was. I gulped and pointed towards the area I had set up.
Watching as he casually slouched into the seat, his eyes zeroing in on me as I worked.
“Stop it.”
“I’m not doing anything, love.” He responded with a cheeky smile.
“You’re staring.”
“And you are hiding something.”
“Even if I was, I wouldn’t tell you. So-” And like any mature adult I ended by sticking my tongue out.
Needless to say, with our combined talent, Caroline, Jena, Christine, and I had the boys ready and handed over to the stage crew with a few minutes to spare.
As soon as I was sure I wasn’t needed anymore I hightailed it to Cameron’s dressing room. There was still a good 25 minutes before I would be needed again.
I swung the door open, not even bothering to knock, only to find everyone in hysterics.
“Speak of the devil.” Michael laughed out as he nodded towards me.
“You were talking about me?” I asked looking around the room.
“Cameron was telling us about your disastrous date.” Danielle informed trying to hide her smile behind her hand.
“Oh my GOD, Cameron. Why would you tell them that?” I shouted at the boy trying to hide in the corner.
“Well they asked about us and it kind of just... came up.”
“Kind of like your lunch that day.” Brent now added.
I slapped my hand to my face, letting myself fall onto the nearest chair. “I hate you all.”
“Baby, I’m so sorry.”
I pulled my hand away from my face to glare at him. I wasn’t really mad at him for telling, just slightly embarrassed.
Cameron had it set in his mind a few days ago that we needed to go out on an actual date, and me being in my current state of constant guilt agreed even though I had been sick to my stomach for most of the day.
It had been our first really date, marked by the memorable moment of me puking up everything I had choked down at the nice restaurant he had found in a city I can’t even remember. Not only did I throw it all up but I managed to do so not only all over myself but also all over Cameron.
It was quite the stinky cab ride back to our hotel where every single boy in each band happened to be wandering the halls and had quite the laugh at our disgusting state.
Cameron was a sweetheart about it all too. He helped me wash up and tucked me into my bed, staying with me until I feel asleep.
“I’m never going to live that damn date down, am I?” I sighed.
“Probably not.” Zach concluded.
I rolled my eyes and turned to the girls. “I’ve got to go set up in the quick change, try not to let these boys get too out of hand. I’ll see you after the show?”
They both nodded and quickly fell into whatever conversation Brent and Michael were having.
I stood up and began to leave the room, as I started to close the door a hand shot out to stop me. I turned just in time to see Cameron slid out and close it himself.
“So I was thinking, since our first date was such a bust we could try again tomorrow. We’ll be in Orlando, maybe we could got to Universal and geek out at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.”
I bit my lip and looked down. “Um actually Cam, I was going to go visit my mom, she lives in Orlando. I don’t get to see her often, so, you know.”
He looked slightly disappointed but understanding never the less. “Of course. You’re right, you should go see your mom. Maybe later then.”
“Yea. Actually when Harry and I get back maybe, you and I can go out to dinner?” I tried to reason, feeling bad for shooting him down when he seemed so eager.
“Harry is going with you?” Cameron’s eyebrows knit together at the news.
I could have let the floor swallow me whole right then. “Um... yea. My mom loves him, all of them really, but I think the rest will be busy tomorrow so it’s just me and Harry.”
Why was I still talking?
Cameron looked a little hurt at that, although he tried very hard to hide it. “Right. Well I hope you have fun babe.” And before I could think of anything to say to fix it, he had walked back into the dressing room.
I am such an idiot.
No, they were definitely still there.
