Summer Nights

Chapter Nine

*Niall's P.O.V*
Unfortunately, Melissa was only a few tables in front of us. Holly didn't seem to notice or care; she just got her tray and sat down with us. I was next to her, Liam was on her left, and Louis, Harry, and Zayn were sitting across from us. I was in the process of scarfing down the chicken, and Liam was drizzling the chocolate syrup all over his ice cream when I felt someone sit down next to me. "Hey," they purred. I turned to see Melissa with a coy smile on her face. I uncomfortably shifted closer to Holly, and she discreetly moved farther down the bench so I could distance myself from her. The guys were glaring at her, and Holly was frowning and looking like she was about to get up and exchange a few words with her.
"Why aren't you with your friends?" I asked, looking anywhere but at her. Holly looked at me and mouthed, "What friends?" while feigning confusion. I stifled a laugh.
"Because I wanted to be with you," she cooed.
"Well, I think it would be best for all of us if you leave and go back to them," I politely replied. By now, I'm pretty sure Holly had restricted breathing space. Melissa remained seated and tried talking to me. Everyone was pretty annoyed– her high-pitched voice was probably driving Holly nuts.
"Why don't you go to your other friends," I cordially suggested for the third time, and she just kept on talking. After her fifth attempt to make conversation with me, I rolled my eyes and desperately mouthed, "Help!" to Holly. She nodded and interrupted Melissa while she was rambling on about her after-school mall plans.
"Don't you understand English girl? The guy wants some peace, and I'm pretty sure your chipmunk voice doesn't qualify as anything near peaceful," she said. Melissa's eyes widened in surprise, then she glared at her.
"Yup, you heard me. In case you really are that naive, that means go!" She pointed a finger at Melissa's table who were gawking at Holly. I bit back a laugh while the boys didn't bother hiding their reactions.
I'm pretty sure Melissa didn't even know what naive meant, and that made Holly seem even smarter to me. Your average girl couldn't even tell you what half of the words that Holly used meant, and that's her natural vocabulary– judging by all the big words she said in all our conversations today. I foresee a better English grade. . .
"Well," Melissa huffed. "I don't see why you're here, if he wants peace."
"Because we actually like her and she's awesome," Zayn spoke up, immediately jumping to her defense once she insulted Holly. Melissa's mouth dropped open in surprise, and she just scoffed and stalked off. I could already hear her furtively gossiping to her friends.
We all finished eating a few minutes later; thankfully there were no more encounters with Melissa.
"Can we please go outside?" Holly begged. I shrugged.
"Why not? Come on guys."
