Summer Nights
Chapter Five
*Holly's P.O.V*
We talked and joked the whole way there, and the coach met us at the doorway.
"Ok! Holly, here is your uniform, and I will be assigning lockers to you shortly," he announced.
"For now, go change and run five laps around the track." He went back inside his office and I went to the locker room. It was your standard black and white room. Past the hallway, there were three showers on the right wall, and five sinks on the opposite side with some scattered electrical outlets for hairdryers and other appliances. In the main room, three walls were covered in black lockers, and the last wall had some hanging coat hooks for car keys and gym bags. I quickly changed and put everything inside my locker; I didn't trust Melissa to not disturb my stuff, so I made sure the lock was securely on. I tightened my shoelaces on my tennis sneakers one last time, and slipped a black scrunchie around my wrist. I walked out and quickly met the boys. They were wearing gym shorts and the PE shirt, and they greeted me. I threw my wavy brown hair up in a ponytail, and headed outside. The crisp fall air met my lungs as a cooling breeze ruffled past. As much as I enjoy nature, I wanted to get those laps over with, so I started running. I was on my last lap when Liam caught up to me.
"How are you so fast?" I gasped, turning the corner. He ruefully smiled as he matched my pace.
"Because I am," he teased as we finished the lap. Harry wasn't too far behind with Louis on the third turn while Niall and Zayn were completing the second turn. When they all finally finished, Liam and I had already cooled down, and Louis was jokingly wheezing. We walked back inside, and when everyone finished, Coach blew on his whistle and wrote something on his clipboard.
"Gather round guys! Ok, today, we will be playing a nice, friendly, game of volleyball," he announced, aiming the word 'friendly' at me. I'm guessing he'd already looked at my previous school sport records. I've played volleyball for five years now, and I can play any position, but I enjoy playing outside for spiking or being setter.
"So the teams will be. . . Niall, Liam, Louis, Harry, Zayn, and Melissa; and Holly, Michael, David, Brandon, John, and Matt. The rest of you will be subs and scorekeepers. Start warming up!" I groaned and grabbed a volleyball from the cart. I started bumping to myself, and the other boys on my team were hopeless.
Five minutes later, Coach blew on the whistle again and told us our positions. I was serving first, then when the other team would get the ball, Zayn would serve. He beckoned me to start, and I readied myself and tossed the ball. When it was just above my right hand's fingertips, I swung. It made a satisfying thump as it flew over the net, almost hitting Louis. He flailed at it and it went up. Niall dove for it, and it went up a second time. Harry spiked it, but it wasn't that hard. I bumped it, and David set it. I took my approach, and jumped up. I spiked it, and Zayn couldn't get it back up. It went on like his until John hit the ball into the net. By then, our team had eight points, and the other team now had one point. Zayn served the ball and it went into the net, but Melissa, who obviously didn't understand the rules of volleyball, clawed at it. Coach blew the whistle and she was subbed out. She was trying to impress Niall with her nonexistent "sporty attitude" and he just rolled his eyes at her and grinned at me.
*Niall's P.O.V*
I grinned at Holly– she'd noticed Melissa's pathetic attempt at trying to impress me. Matt served, and it barely made it over. We scrambled and bumped into each other, trying to get the ball back on the other side. Liam returned it, and went over to Michael as he stood there watching it hit the ground. I could see Holly turn away and face palm herself. I laughed, knowing she probably thought this was like watching drunk pelicans flailing around.
Unless that was just me.
Anyway, she turned back in time to return Harry's free-ball with a long-distance set. The score was 14 (her) to 6 (us). The game continued with us landing a couple of good spikes here and there, but Holly was the star. She managed to turn every return into a full blown spike. It's scary to see a ball flying toward you and you have to avoid getting hit. The bell rang, and Coach told us we did a good job today. Everyone raced to the locker rooms. Liam, Harry, Zayn, Louis, and I went inside and showered.
