Summer Nights

Chapter Thirty

*Holly's P.O.V*
"Oh, what joy is found in killing your brain everyday," I muttered, throwing my Spanish book into my locker. Niall chuckled while we grabbed our gym bags.
"At least now you can kill your legs," he teased, and I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever, Horan," I said, lightly punching his shoulder. He stuck his tongue out at me as we walked over to the gym.
The day had been long, with Mr. Sanders making us work on our projects during the entire class duration, the PE coach forcing us to play dodgeball with people who looked like they belonged on the wrestling channel, and a pop quiz in English. And now, it was time for volleyball practice, meaning I won't be able to feel my legs for the next couple of days.
"Well, I gotta go to football practice, and you ought to see how he has us train," he joked. I laughed, and we split ways as we separated for the locker rooms. I quickly changed into my usual PE clothes, throwing my hair into a ponytail. Shoving my duffel bag into my designated locker, I securely locked it before double-checking my shoelaces and walking out.
"Creighton! Get out here!" Coach Walker barked. I sighed, adjusting my hair. She pointed for me to start running, so I obeyed. I watched the scenery go round and round for the fifth time, paying no mind to my aching body.
A shrill blast of the familiar whistle made me stop and realize I'd done one too many laps, and I was near the football players. I was on the edge of the track, near the green turf and across from me was Liam doing some sit-ups.
"Just couldn't stay away, huh?" He teased.
"As if," I answered with a good-natured smirk and roll of my eyes before sprinting back over to the gym entryway, where the others had already filed inside.
"Get your head in the game," Wilson told me, holding the door open for me.
"Sorry," I mumbled, slipping inside. As the metal door closed, I caught Niall looking after me. He gave me a thumbs-up before returning to his talking coach.

"You ladies know the drill!" Walker ordered with a wave of her hand as we assembled in a line starting on the right-back position. She slapped the ball, signaling for us to start. I'm pretty sure all of us groaned as we moved up, the next person already readying herself for her turn.

"Take a water break!" All twenty-three of us sighed, jogging over to the heavenly water fountains. I took a long gulp, and wiped the back of my mouth, silently thanking the cold liquid for preventing my throat from turning into the Sahara desert. A nudge on my shoulder made me turn around to see Harry and Zayn.
"Hey guys. Shouldn't you be out there?" I casually asked.
"Well, since you're already such good friends with us, we were wondering if you want to help all of us plan Niall's birthday party," Zayn said, getting straight to the point.
"You guys really don't beat around the bush much, do you? Is that an England thing, or just your thing?" I joked, tugging down the hem of my shirt. They shook their heads, smirking.
"Not sure. Anyways, you in?" They eagerly asked.
"Ten seconds!" Someone called, and I started running back to the net.
"Yes or no?" Harry shouted, needing an answer. Remembering the question, I yelled over my shoulder:
"I'm in."
