Summer Nights

Chapter Two

*Holly's P.O.V*
I breathed in a sigh of relief. I'd made it to the high school with fifteen minutes to spare, and it seemed I would have enough time to figure where my locker is and where all the classrooms are. I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder. I had my textbooks in my hand and was walking in front of the school when a soccer ball came flying out of nowhere and hit me in the face, and someone ran into me. My books flew everywhere, and I fell back on the grass lawn of the school, safely landing on the soft turf. The guy was repeatedly apologizing, and I finally looked up see the brightest blue eyes ever. He smiled and offered his hand to me. I blushed and took it. He had brown hair with blond tips, and he was a little over my height.

"You alright? Sorry about that, I was playing football with a couple of my friends, and they can't aim right, so…" he said with an Irish brogue, and began to gather my books for me.
"That's ok– it's a nice welcome to England," I joked. He laughed, handing me my books.
"So, you're the new student?" He asked. I nodded, adjusting my bag.
"Well, I'm Niall," he said.
"That's a nice name," I smiled.
"I'm Holly, and I just moved here from California," I resumed walking to the school, Niall by my side.
"Hmm, sounds nice. Hey, what's your schedule like?" He asked.
"Oh, um, it's home room, History, English, PE, Math, first elective– which is band for me, lunch, Science, and Spanish," I rattled off. Yes, I'd already committed my entire schedule to memory.
"Yours?" I asked, entering the school, as Niall held the door open for me. I thanked him and he just smiled.
"It's the least I can do. And I have pretty much the same schedule as you except for the elective and some other classes."
"Oh cool! So, I guess I'll have one new friend for my first day, right?" I teased.
"Of course," He cheekily grinned.
"Now let's see, locker 206, combination is 12 to the left…" I mumbled to myself, trying to find the right set of lockers. Niall's face lit up.
"Oh, I'm locker 207! Let me show you where they are," he steered me to a set in the main hallway. Great. Now I'm going to get trampled in between classes. Oh well, it's only going to be for this school year. I managed to open it in the first try, and I immediately organized my locker. Niall watched me as I finished in ten seconds. He swung open his and retrieved some books, then we walked together to the same homeroom as we got to know more about each other.
"So, just to be clear, you're in 12th grade, you're 17 and turning 18 in September, and you're from Mullingar, Ireland?" He nodded.
"Same here except I'm from a rural part of California, and I'm turning 18 in December. So you're older than me," I pouted. He laughed. At that moment, the bell rang, causing a flood of people to swarm us in the hallway. I instinctively pressed closer to Niall– I get a little claustrophobic when I'm surrounded all over and it gets a little harder for me to breathe. He surprisingly did the same and we managed to make it to our homeroom.

When we reached the doorway, he turned to me.
"Wanna sit with me and my friends? They also have to apologize to you for hitting you in your face this morning."
"Sure, and it's ok Niall. It was an accident," I followed him to the corner where four other guys were. They all smiled at me. One of them had a mop of curly brown hair and stunning green eyes, another one had brown hair and warm brown eyes, the guy next to him had brown hair and blue eyes that weren't as bright as Niall's, and the last one had dark hair spiked up in a quiff and chocolate brown eyes.
"Hello love, sorry about this morning; Harry just can't learn how to aim properly," the one with the blue eyes spoke up, extending his hand to me. I shook it, silently wondering which one Harry was. The one with the brown eyes and hair must've noticed because he began introducing them.
"I'm Liam, the guy over there with the curly hair is Harry, the one with the dark hair is Zayn, and the blue eyed one is Louis. I assume you've already met Niall?" I nodded. They all asked to see my schedule, and I gave it to them.
"Ok, we all have similar ones, but different electives and some different classes, but we'll get to see you a lot." Liam said after comparing everyone's schedules. I smiled. These guys seemed really friendly and probably better than my old "friends" from California. Harry gave me a flirtatious wink, making the others glare at him. They started to fake wrestle when a girl who looked about my age came up to me.
She had styled blond hair and piercing blue eyes, and she looked like she'd just left a cover shoot for Teen Vogue. She had on a fancy pink top with a white rhinestone-encrusted bolero, a miniskirt with a belt, an expensive Kate Spade purse, pounds of makeup caked on her face, a diamond necklace, a gold cuff bracelet, a sapphire ring, hot pink nail polish on her long tapered nails, and three-inch high heels. I cheerfully greeted her, but she didn't return it.

"Are they your friends?" She asked, gesturing to the boys who had stopped wrestling and were staring at her. Confused, I nodded.
"Melissa, get out of here," Niall coldly said, clenching his fists. The boys stood by him looking at her with shock written all over their faces.
"Why? What is she–" the girl lunged at me and managed to scratch my face with her razor-sharp nails. I stumbled back into the table, but my instincts kicked in. I quickly steadied myself and when she came me again, I took her wrist and skillfully twisted it behind her. She cried out in surprise, but I didn't release her.
'What was that for?" I asked, putting more pressure on her wrist. She evilly smiled.
"I'm sure your friends will tell you," she said.
"I'm serious, Melissa. Get. Out," Niall ordered, gently taking my arm and prying Bella's wrist away.
"You're so weak you need someone to come save you?" She snarled.
"Oh I'll show you who's weak," I growled, glaring at her. She winked at Niall and sashayed out the door. It was silent for a moment as I absorbed the shock of the damage to my face.
"Okay, first of all, who the heck is Melissa? And second, what does she do to her nails? My face is killing me!" They all exchanged glances, and Liam quickly took my arm and led me to the sink in the art room where a mirror was. My cheek was slightly bleeding, and there were some nail indentations. I took a paper towel and wiped all the blood away.
"We'll explain later," Liam said, his face distraught. I shrugged, going back to home room. The boys were waiting for me, and Niall looked positively stormy. His sparkling crystal blue eyes had guilt in them.
"I'm so sorry!" He practically wailed.
"It's ok Niall. You didn't know she was going to do that. But, who is she?" I asked.
"Well, she was a friend of ours in the first year of high school, then she started being mean to us and ditching us to go hang out with the popular people. We told her to clean up her act, but she didn't, so we stopped being friends with her. And, she wanted to be my girlfriend, and I didn't want her to. She was always trying to get close to me, so I started avoiding her. Now she gets mad at any girl who's our friend," Niall explained, the words coming out in one big rush.
"That explains the majority of this, but there's probably more that's gonna happen between us anyways," I assured him.
"If she touches you again, she's dead," he said, curling his hands into fists again. The bell rang, signaling it was time to go to first period.
